Omega Electrical and Audio Help / MID lights staying on
« on: 12 February 2011, 20:57:10 »
Just started with this problem today in that the lights on the MID are now staying on after the ignition has been turned off.

Once the engine is stopped the display will momentarily show the date and then the name of the radio station will come back on, it stays like this permanently now even after the car is locked.  I've resorted to removing the fuse for the interior lights whenever i leave the car but obviously this is a bit annoying so does anyone know what's causing the problem and even better how can i out it right.

Not used my barge in a while due to the MOT running out in early october and me needing to do a few bits to it to get it thorough but having no time to do it.  Anyway, all done now and so should be going for MOT on tuesday.

I had a weird problem yesterday in that the car had been stood for a week without being touched, went to start it and it fired up straight away,  had to replace rear coil springs and have a fiddle with the handbrake.  All in it took about 2 1/2 hours and during that time everything in the car was off and the keys were on a table next to the car,  when I came to restart it the battery was totally dead, put it on charge over night and came back to it today and everything seems fine except I can't get the remote locking to work.  It's the infra red type rather than the RF.  I've tried reprogramming it as per the car handbook but it does absolutely nothing.  The light on the key fob flashes when it is pressed but it has no effect on the car,  It was working fine yesterday when I opened the car before starting work on it so i'm a bit perplexed.

Any ideas?

Sorry for the rambling long post too.

Normally i'd say about 50% of the pixels on my MID are dead, keep meaning to get it sorted but never get round to it.

I've had the battery disconnected whilst trying to sort out why my fob will no longer operate the central locking but i've noticed that when i've reconnected the battery there are now only a handfull of dead pixels on the MID.

Anyone know whats caused it and will it stay like this?  I'd like to think so but somehow i reckon they'll all be dead again before long.

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / 1996 Omega and radio reception
« on: 26 February 2007, 17:32:19 »
The 1996 GSL omega i've just aqquired seems to have terrible radio reception, am i correct in thinking that it uses the rear window element as an antenna?

Not sure if the same setup is used on later model omegas but what are people's general expereinces of this setup, is it generally rubbish or does it work ok for most people.

I ask as my omega has had an aftermarket Blaupunk stero fitted and i can get about 3 radio stations, with only very very very sporadic reception of any local stations.  At the moment i'm not sure if it's because the previous owner hasn't fitted it properly or if it's because the rear window antenna method is a bit pants.

Is it possible to fit a proper aerial to the car anywhere and if so are kits available to be able to do it?

Starting to get a bit sick of only being able to get radio 3 & 4 now :)

Omega General Help / MOT Failure - Emissions
« on: 26 November 2010, 13:02:18 »
Just had the car in for it's MOT and one of the things it's failed on is emissions, specifically the CO content.  On the fast idle it was 0.49% against a limit of 0.3% and on the second fast idle it was 0.36% so was only just over.

Of all the things it can fail on it's the emissions I hate the most as i've no way of checking them myself.

Anyone got any suggestions as to what I can do to get them down?  I'll be giving it a thrashing up the motorway before i take it in for the retest but anything else that could help would be welcome.

It's also been failed on the parking brake having no reserve travel even though it is fully on within 5 clicks which I'm a bit confused about.

Omega General Help / Very annoying front end rattle
« on: 15 November 2010, 19:01:22 »
My omega has had a rattle around the front passenger side wheel for quite a while, I had presumed it was the drop links which I changed a while ago and although it improved things slightly the rattle was still there.  Since then I have also changed the front wishbones and the track rods as the ball joints were a little on the slack side.

When I first changed the track rods it seemed to fix the rattle but after 2 or so days of them being on I was going over some fairly large speed bumps and there was a rather large clunk from the front end and the rattle had come back.

I've had a look sevel times for anything thats loose, i've taken all the replaced parts off and put them back on, i've swung on everything and everything seems to be tight so i'm at a loss as to what else it could be.  About the only thing i've not looked at properly is the anti roll bar "D" bushes although when swinging on the anti roll bar it all feels fairly solid.

Any suggestions on what else to look for what be much appreciated.

Omega General Help / Swapping door locks over
« on: 15 December 2009, 13:16:03 »
I posted a few weeks ago how my remote central locking (IR Type) suddenly stopped working,  had a fiddle with it, tried new batteries in the fob checked fuses and had a gander at the wiring for the locking ECU but can't see anything wrong.

Because of this i'm having to use the key to open the door but it's very very stiff on the drivers side and it is now becoming a 10 minute procedure to open the car as once i put my key in the lock and open it I can then not turn the key back in order to take it out of the lock without a hell of a load of wiggling and relocking and then unlocking again.  I now don't bother locking it any more as the hassle of getting the thing open is just too much of a pain.

The lock in the passenger side door seems to work fine so is it possible to transfer the barrel and other bits into the drivers door and if so how easy / fiddly of a job is it.

Omega General Help / Still got a little clunk
« on: 30 November 2009, 13:06:19 »
I've changed my wishbones over a per the guide on here, simple enough, i've also swapped over the droplinks as they're wrecked,  i've also changed the anti rollbar bushes.

The car is driving much much better and the constant clunky rattle is now gone however I do get the odd clunk when i'm going over fairly big holes, it seems to happen more often if i go over a bump with the steering at or near full lock.

Is there anything else in that area that wears out and can produce a knocking sound,  everything down there seems solid so i'm at a bit of a loss now.

Omega General Help / Arse! MOT Failed.
« on: 25 November 2009, 18:19:43 »
Took it for it's MOT today and it failed on two fairly piddly items.  First being the handbrake is binding slightly on one wheel (at least thats a free and easy fix) and second they said the O/S headlight lens is degraded to a point it's affecting the beam image, also got an advisory for the same thing on the N/S lens.  Not too bad but I really was hoping to have it back on the road today, all this motorcycling everywhere in hurricane force winds and torrential rain is starting to wear me down.

I now need to source an O/S headlight as i'm presuming it's a sealed unit and you can't just replace the lens.  Only planning on changing the failed light at the mo as funds are a bit tight and it's crimbo a month from today  :'(

At least it's not as piddly a fail as last year when they rejected it because a clip was missing from one of the brake flexi hoses - I was rather furious then :)

Omega General Help / Flat battery with everything off
« on: 21 November 2009, 20:50:53 »
My barge has been off the road for nearly 7 weeks now, MOT ran out at start of october and i've just not had a lot of time to do the few bits it needed in any sort of hurried manner, as I use a motorbike for my commuting it's not such a  big deal although it is getting really cold in the morning so having the car with it's heated seats again would be nice.

Anyway, car has been parked up all week and not started at all, came to start it today and it fired up straight away.  Moved it into the inlaws barn as I had to change the rear coil springs and fiddle with the handbrake.  In the time

Omega General Help / Changed wishbones but still have a rattle
« on: 27 October 2009, 16:35:12 »
Finally got round to changing my wishbones today and all went smoothly apart from dropping one of the bolts down a gap between the bulkhead, it'll never see the light of day again.

Put everything back together, lowered the car first to settle everything in before tightening it all up, basically as per the guide on this site.

Upon taking the car for a drive it still has a noticeable rattle at the front, not as bad as it was before I changed the wishbones but it's definately still there.  Whilst I was under the car I had a good look at everything else and it all seems solid so I can't think what else it could be.

I did used to own an escort and the bushes on the anti roll bar went and that produced a similar wishbone type knocking sound but looking on the omega I can't seem to see any similar looking bush on the anti roll bar.  >:(

Any ideas?

Omega General Help / Can't get the wheel off
« on: 19 October 2009, 13:08:43 »
First post on here in a long time mainly due to not having any probs with the car in quite a while.

My wishbones are shot and I attempted to change them over the weekend.  Got the drivers side done alright but on the passenger side i've got the spare wheel on due to me getting a puncture,  the spare has been on a while as I don't use the car very much prefering to go most places by motorbike.

When I came to take the wheel off the bolts came out OK but the wheel is stuck absolutely solid on the hub.  I spent quite while laying on my back booting it,  put the wheel nuts back in loosely and took it up and down the road and whilst parked turned the wheel full lock left and right but it is still solid and i'm at a bit of a loss in how to proceed.

Anyone got any tips and tricks?  I need to get it MOT'd next week so really need to get this other wishbone changed.  I've had some stiff wheels in the past but never anything like this, it really is absolutely solid.

Help!!!

Omega General Help / Starter motor spares
« on: 10 May 2009, 21:56:50 »
Finally managed to get the starter off my V6 and as long as I live I never want to have to do one again.

Anways i've pulled the starter to bits and the inside of the motor itself was totally full of old oil and gravel and just general gunk so no wonder it didn't want to work.  I've cleaned all that up but i've also noticed that 1 of the brushes is extremely low, it's the one with the braided cable attached that then attaches to the back of the solenoid, it's so low that the cable is almost coming away from the brush.  Is it possible to get replacement brushes for these or can you only buy the whole starter?

I've had a quick look but I can't seem to find anything.

I'm trying to remove the starter moter on my 2.5,  managed to get the 2 screws holding the starter out and the motor is now free but I can't for the life of me shift the engine mount on that side.  I've got the 2 bolts out on the bottom of the mount and have had the engine jacked up on a bit of wood but i'm not sure where to go form there as Haynes isn't very clear on it.

Any pointers?

Omega General Help / Removing the starter motor V6
« on: 30 April 2009, 16:58:20 »
My starter has failed again and it also appears that my rocker cover seals have gone too as the starter is covered in a nice thick layer of oil.

I plan on taking the starter off over the weekend to see if it can be rescued but does anyone have any handy hints about how to go about getting it off as access is a bit tight to say the very least unless you have the worlds smallest hands.  Haynes says to remove the engine mount on that side but is that really needed becasue as far as I can see it won't really give me that much more room.

Could have dealt with the omega breaking down as i barely use it but the day after my motorbike decided it didn't like me and that also needs some attention so at the moment I am without any transport at all.  Just in time for a bank holiday too.

Bugger.
