As my 120a alternator has failed on my 2.6 another required

My 120A alternator recently failed on my 2.6 Elite. Took it to an auto electricians who replaced the internals gubbins with Bosch parts and replaced the pulley bearing. Cost me £55 plus VAT. Not worth chancing a supposedly good used imho, given that its not a 5 minute job to fit it.

I'd fix the original. As the hardest part of the entire job is removing and refitting the alternator.

Well I've got the hang of getting it off so that isn't a problem but repair as I just checked the regulator cost and at £45 doesn't seem very cost effective if a recon one at £73

Which also gives an indication to quality of the refurb...
Although parts should be cheaper than that if you shop more carefully ;)

Mid Ulster rotating electrics charge less than £20 for a regulator for mine a couple of years ago. ;)

If you have the alternator off, put the number of the regulator into Google,, cost about £15.00.

I had an alternator for an Omega that had been repaired (have still got the receipt) using Cargo electrical parts. It literally lasted 2years before becoming faulty and not charging again. I'm not saying Cargo are poor quality parts, but I'd never heard of them until I looked them up. Hence the reason I specifically requested Bosch parts in the one I had overhauled recently.

I just contacted my local alternator repair centre and they want £96 who knows what they will repair it with.I've seen a few on ebay some seem to be compatible some not it's a bit of a mine field.Would a diesel fit a petrol for example if 120 amps.or a Signum fit an Omega etc etc

Repaired two different alternators with the regulator / brush pack from the above, still going strong... in fact both have lasted longer than the genuine refurbished one from Vauxhall I got many years ago!

That depends if they are also fitting new bearings for that price as well. It's not a bad price if they are to be honest.
You could fit any alternator on any car as long as the mountings line up but be prepared to butcher cables etc in the process. I wouldn't buy anything that's a cheap unknown brand or used (unless OEM and buying to refurbish). There's not much that goes wrong with an alternator to be honest - noisy bearings occasionally and on the 2.6/3.2 alternators the regulator and brush packs are one bolt on module and easy to replace when the alternator is removed. - See Mark and Kevin's repair guide on here.

One of the ones on Ebay was a Bosch remanufactured with seal at £99 but no warranty which has put me off that one.I'll have to chat with the repair centre and see what I get for the money at least it's in my town and has a 12 month warranty

2.2 Dti Diesel alternator fits, but you'll need to swap the pulley.

I should have been a bit clearer, I know first hand that the Omega 2.2 Dti alternator fits the V6. Pulley is held on with a nut. Removing if can require some creativity, but it is just a nut.

If you're buying a new/rebuilt one then you would be daft not to get the correct one for your engine ;)

a few seconds with an impact wrench.
If you don't have one, then you'll need to hold the pulley without damaging it.
Personally, I would always buy a replacement alternator(and starter motor) even since TA Spares closed.
