Title: The deed is done ... :(
Post by: Entwood on 28 March 2019, 19:52:44
The deed is done ... the beast has been replaced by ...   :'( :'( :'(

Most folks don’t know but back in January I had a nasty fall that ended up with 16 head stitches, cracked ribs, and severe bruising to back, pelvis and hips …  This has left me 1) Struggling to lift/load stuff into the top box when fitted and 2) REALLY struggling to do any work on or under the car due to mobility issues; add this to the fact that 3) She is now over 18 years and I cannot get European breakdown cover from anywhere – there is no way I’m doing 3 weeks in France with the “tintent” on the back without breakdown cover, so I’m afraid she has to go. Replacement is an estate so the lifting problems go, its only 5 years old, so the breakdown cover is solved, and the chances of me needing to work on it are hopefully very low !!

Only downside is it runs on truck fuel ...

Stand by for a lengthy advert, with lots of photos, in the for sale section   :'( :'( :'(

Sorry to hear about your fall, Entwood, and pleased you are on the mend. These things happen, it's good that you are determined to go driving abroad again, even if it entails buying a younger and more expensive car. Good luck to you!

What do you intend to do about servicing etc Nige? Main dealer, Indy Audi specialist or local garage?  :-\

Hope you're recovering well from what sounds like a very nasty fall!  :)

Once Nigel realises how torquey his new acquisition is, and the ease with which it tows, coupled with a much increased fuel economy, I think he will be a very happy chap.  :y

It certainly has some ooomph, VERY quick to accelerate and I could lose my licence very quickly !!, not towed with it yet, but the fuel economy will not be THAT big an increase over LPG, although it should be slightly better, especially solo.

:)

Thanks for all the nice comments regarding my health, it is getting better every day, and the quacks say a full recovery is just a matter of time.

The beast is provisionally sold, awaiting the deposit ....  mixture of :)  and  :'( :'(

On every single diesel I've had, you only get significantly better economy than petrol if you are Miss Daisy.  Gun a decent diesel about, and it will easily give MPG in the 20s over a tank....   ...or lower. Certainly my 3l MV6 was cheaper on fuel to run than the 3l Jag diesel.  Obviously, I care little about economy, or tree huggers.

The torque characteristics should improve towing MPG and drivability.

Turbo derv cars seem to respond very well to a remap.Better than turbo petrol.

Some say a remap also improves the MPG.......perhaps.

mmm don't know a great deal about diesels yet, but this one revs freely to 3000 without batting an eyelid, and the redline starts at 5000 !! coupled to the 7 speed box it goes some !!!

Sat at 85 on the dual carriage way it was showing 36 mpg on the computer

It's a bit like brexit, Nigel. Diesel haters will never, ever admit that they have any benefits whatsoever. Entrenched positions are the order of the day. For my part, I have had the same model of car in both petrol and diesel and, taking everything into account, I am happier with the diesel.

5000 rpm will be all it can do not start at, and really doesn’t need to be up there,
Anyway it will be 100% better than the Omega for towing especially if you get it remapped which I recommend as it will be better on fuel and far more lively (I know).

If it has the same engine as the 3.0 tdi A6 quattro we have at work I can confirm that. I don't think my 3.2 Omega would stand a chance of keeping up with it.

Hi Nige. I do know how long these things take to recover from, having recently slipped on mud and kissed concrete - lots of blood and a broken nose - so I wish you well with your recovery.
Your dearly-departed did a magnificent job when you relocated MY tin tent, so if your new motor is even better, then WOW! :y 8) :)

My XJ shows around 40mpg doing similar, but Jag fuel computers are like a cheap watch, to the order of 10-15%.  So probably very similar in reality :)

Over the 2 years I've had it, I think my (manually calculated) MPG is hovering around 32mpg - and now has enough data points that a good long, 300 mile 70mph cruise doesn't really impact the overall figure.  I think you drive more sedately most of the time, so you might get good figures.

So pence per mile, purely on fuel, its a bit behind the LPG MV6, and diesel servicing does tend to be a little more expensive (and all modern car servicing is, because they all need this new fangled oils and shit - and in your case, probably some pigs piss as well?). I suspect you might gain on the towing side of things though.

I'm always wary of remapping Audis, but that is based purely on the older A4s and their shitty manual chocolate gearboxes that start to melt.  So if you go down that route, go with trusted, reliable feedback from people you know/trust, not marketing tosh.

yup .. and according to the paperwork they cost the purchaser a cool £2,445.00 (inc VAT) !!

Base spec of the car was £44.525 (inc VAT) but with all the "extras" stipulated it came to  £56,530.00 (inv VAT)  !!!!!!!!

so I think I got a reasonable deal comparing to Autotrader/ebay/Motors/Parkers/Lookers/Gumtree and everywhere else I looked and compared !!!

Does need a set of tyres VERY soon (bartering point made) presently has "run flats" ... not sure I'll go that way...   :-\

Sorry to hear of your fall Nige, hope you are on the mend.

As for the new car, very nice.  :y  I've had quite a few 3.0d's (albeit bmw) and they have some serious torque, both solo and towing. For such a quick car I've always been more than happy with the mpg, although the All Wheel Drive (XDrive in my case) has had quite a significant hit on mpg.
In my view, you have a quick car that still gives decent mpg so I'd be more than happy with it.  :y

Hope it serves you well.  :y

With regard to new 20 inch boots.

I went for Michelin Pilot Sport 4S. They are superb. Longevity is excellent as is both wet and dry grip. Quiet too.

They are expensive but shopping around makes a huge difference.

Seems I was not told the truth .. it does NOT have runflats at present, and the paperwork has no mention of runflats .... but previous owner said it did ....

It has a spare of sorts ... weird looking collapsable thing that comes with a compressor :(

Tyres are looking about £200 ish a corner ... trying to choose between Continental ContiSportContact / Michelin PS4 /Pirelli P Zero / Goodyear Eagle F Assym 3

As for the spare... https://youtu.be/GjFnCOI7NUQ at least it has one :y

Being worn it NEEDS all 4 replacing !! 2.5mm left on the fronts, 3.00mm on the rears !!  :)

Would it be a good idea to periodically inflate/deflate those collapsable spares to keep the rubber supple?  :-\

I do like the wheels and guess they may be an upgrade.

Twenty inches?
I have a real dislike of twin spoke type wheels, such as those on the MFL MV6, or Portfolio XJs.  They are a sod to clean.

tyrewise, pretty much every tyre place will happily match Blackcircles price (fitted price, that is), so I tend to buy locally, telling them the Blackcircles price before they quote.

Its my preference to get a local place to supply and fit, rather than buy mail order, then pay someone to fit, as I've had a few tyre failures, and it takes all the arguments out of the equation.  And unless you can fit yourself, its never more expensive.

Went away in the new beast for Easter, whist prepping to tow I decided to have a photo shoot ....

Hate to say it , but I "might" have found a better towcar than the Omega, and I thought that was good !!  Behaved impeccably and needed concentration to stay within the speed limits, even with 1700 Kgs on the back !!

Initial fuel costings are surprising, over 360 miles of which 160 were towing, 120 around town/country lanes, and just 80 of solo cruising, its worked out at 17.06 pence / mile, the Omega on LPG over a similar "mixed" trip averaged 17.5 pence /mile. I know it's way to early, and it's just a snapshot but I'm pretty pleased as I expected it to be a fair bit more expensive than LPG :)

Good stuff  :y

Always thought a big 6 pot diesel would tow well, due to huge amounts of torque.

Shocking news just in: Car designed 10 years ago better than car designed 30 years ago.

 :P

/me goes back to looking at cars designed 20 years ago.. "compromise" ;D

Seriously though, those fuel costs are very good indeed - very impressive with a burger van on the back :y

Now don't go thinking you can achieve that. Our resident chief Pikey is a pensioner you know. And we know how they drive :P

Sorry, best I could do as the tin-tent has no doner cooking facilities ... :), and I thought TB might benefit from a lower calorie version :)

If you fancy a chicken kebab, this recipe is actually really nice: http://pinchofnom.com/recipes/syn-free-chicken-kebab-slimming-world/

Do it in a disposable tin, though, because the yogurty mix will weld itself irrevocably to the pan, speaking from experience.

There's a doner kebab recipe knocking about somewhere that you do in the slow cooker, too.. haven't tried that one yet.

Obviously drinking 12 pints beforehand will ruin the diet aspect ;D
