V6 cam sprockets refitted incorrectly - what would happen
« on: 28 October 2015, 19:46:39 »

I've been doing the head gaskets on the V6 and almost put an inlet cam sprocket on 180deg out of alignment.

It made me think though... what would actually happen?

Obviously the inlet valves would be open on the combustion stroke instead of the inlet stroke but there would be no risk of valves meeting the pistons.

What about at the bottom of the stroke though, would the inlets close in time to avoid being hit by the exhausts opening (assuming the exhaust cam sprocket is on correctly) or do the valves not open far enough to make contact with each other in the first place?

Anyone with first hand experience?

Probably one of the very few cam timing mistakes you would get away with then, guess the valves don't meet at the bottom of the stroke  :)

Right enough, it would make sense for the inlet valves to close just as the piston reaches BDC and, to maximise the combustion stroke, for the exhaust valves to open immediately after BDC with perhaps a very small overlap but no more than the overlap you would get if the timing is correct at TDC between exhaust and inlet strokes.
