It shows how wrong the British legal system gets things quite often  :(

Hopefully a proper investigation NOW will name and shame ALL those involved in the cover up and injustice

Prosecuted with the information supplied by the Post Office. Who would question evidense from a government dept run by B.Liar and Brown at the time if memory serves

When the prosecutions really kicked off Sir Ed Davey was Minister for postal services. Alan Bates wrote to him several times but Davey refused to meet him and just replied parroting the Post Office line.
He now says the Post office lied to him. Thats no excuse. When he was informed of problems, it was his job to ensure a proper investigation into it to get to the truth. That was why he was paid his ministerial salary.
In 2017, the Post office hired a big firm of lawyers ( HSF) to deal with the "criminal" postmasters.
Soon after, HSF hired Sir Ed Davey as an adviser on £15000 a month. Dont need to join many dots to work out what they hired him for.
If he can find a shred of decency somewhere within himself, he should retire from public life and give up his knighthood.

Starmer isnt blameless in this either. When he was DPP his department took over some of the post office prosecutions including the case of Seema Misra.
She was sent to prison, and she says the only reason she didnt kill herself was that she was pregnant at the time.

Im no great lover of the Tories, but credit where its due. Tory MP James (now Lord) Abuthnot, heard about the case. He took it on, got his teeth into it and didnt give up until some kind of justice was in sight.
As an aside. Several senior civil servants were on the board of the Post office (on £40k pa each) while all this was happening.

One criticism of the ITV programme is that it left out any mention of Alan Crozier. He took over at the top of the Post office after Vennels left.
After that he became head of ITV and its studios, who made the programme. I read that he still holds shares in ITV.
He is now head of BT.

Imo quite a few senior people from Post office, Fujitsu, and probably politics should be put behind bars over this.
Innocent people took their own lives. Many people had their lives destroyed or severely damaged.
Probably wont happen though.  >:(

And worse bit is they still use the same accounting system, local post master was on radio the other day saying she had just had a 5 grand discrepancy in her accounts wiped off.

but why has it taken 20 years & a 4 part mini series on telly for anyone in gov to do anything about it? There was a Panorama episode about some years ago detailing most of Mr Allan Bates vs The PO
As I understand it, neither the PO or Fijitsu have actually admitted there is a (substantial (as all software has bugs)) issue with the system, and it's still running today. Is it still cocking up today?

Sadly, in this day and age, it has to be on trash tv* for anybody to notice, and politicians only take an interest when its obvious which way the public mood is going.

*not seen the series yet (but intend to), not idea if its crap or not, but you know what I mean.

Since we have lived where we are, almost 24 years, we're on our fourth post office. All previous iterations have either been dumped or found this issue so horrific to deal with that they've walked from the contract.

One place had an auditor/security bod in checking up because the discrepancies were consistently large. She made a point of hand writing every single entry and when they compared the two the manual notes were a couple of grand off compared to what the system thought it would be. Her choice, make up the shortfall or go to court. Suffice to say she shut both the post office and pet shop that it was based in because it simply wasn't viable.

Must admit that i found it guite good. Even the 'fiction' parts weren't over the top either. Also, the 'real story 'episode is well made too.

Our Post Office recently closed. No idea why, but our town now has no banks or a Post Office.  :-\
