Air noise when first started
« on: 26 May 2010, 18:30:18 »

Do these all make a sound like a small air compressor when started? goes away after 30 or so seconds..

see.. lost me straight away there.. :-) being a newbie.
Secondary Air injection.. and not needed - where would I 'unplug it' - I don't know what it is making the noise LOL before I go unplugging things. so they all do it then - its not about to blow up :y

passenger side of the front bumper, can't miss it. I forget which fuse to pull which is the easier way, sure someone can confirm which one shortly  :)

can I ask what its doing/there for if not needed?.. the noise seems to come from the Engine bay, not the bumper.. are we talking about the same thing?

basically fresh air is injected into exhaust gasses to make sure there is a 'fuller' burn, and its used when cold. As its running rich on start up, helps burn off more, and reduce emissions when cold.

As MOT emissions are done when hot, its not needed  :y

If your noise is from the passenger side, then it's the SAI as suggested. I think it's more likely to be a noise from the driver's side front wing/bumper where the compressor for the Elite's self levelling suspension lives. If so, then it's perfectly normal  :y  :y  :y

If it's a tappy sort of noise, it could be tappets ( ;D), in which case an oil change may help reduce the noise.

If it's more of a 'Hoover' type noise, it could well be the SAI pump getting tired/sickly.  Stick your head under the front bumper just in front of the passenger-side wheel while someone else starts it (make sure it's got handbrake on and not in gear...).  If that's where the noise is then that's the SAI pump making it.

Never had any trouble with ours so can't advise on disabling it.  It's 'only' there to reduce cold-start emissions and to heat up the cats more rapidly, neither function is crucial.

tell you what, you lads all know your stuff.. been on some forums in my time and some are just full of teenagers driving to fast  - this one has some great advice from knowledgable people
I'll stick my head under the bonnet and see if I can locate which side it comes from on start up..

Not tappets.. more hoover / compressor sort of thing.. but as I said stops after about 30 secs.. maybe less if I haven't turned if off long ago.

I'll put my ear that side tomorrow then. Just sounds like its coming from the engine bay but then I haven't been stood infront listening to the car when I start it!

On my 95 Omega it's the rear pair of fuses in the engine bay box, a 50 amp in my case. Can't remember what number it was.

sorry  - this was a question not a statement - I haven't touched it yet! :-) - I am asking if this magic fuse ONLY disables the SAI? I don't like pulling fuses out just to turn something off.. ideally..  :y

did some listening - and my noise seems to come from the top! so you know where the 4 breather pipes run across the top of the engine/plenum (I guess..) the air sound comes from there, then stops dead after 30 secs or so. I think its the SAI making it but I can hear the air, not the compressor as there is no specific noise from one side of front of engine bay or other.

If anyone does, for whatever reason, want a quiet one, I have one here going cheap.

But lets just say I unplugged my noisy one on the MV6, and won't be fitting the quiet one in its place ;)

Actually had another listen... Does seem to sound like something stops spinning around when the air noise stops so am convinced it's sai compressor. I'll live with it. !!

Unplug it, that will prove it. Its a single large connector on top of the motor itself. Reachable from underneath, but if you want to remove bumper, then you can see it...

This may not be clear - but there is a long black squashy hose running along the right side of the Plenum (if thats the big silver bit on top!) the front end connects to one of the 2 air ram pipes, the other goes off to the bulkhead somewhere. If I squeeze this pipe when the noise is being generated, it makes a difference / gets quieter - would that point at SAI (sorry for the frankly 12 year old description!)

I doubt it, sounds like you are describing the breather pipe which runs down to the exhaust.
