General Car Chat / What sort of price?
« on: 15 March 2023, 17:58:59 »
Hi all, looks like the Omega estate is going up for sale soon (possibly as soon as this or next weekend).

What sort of money do they go for now? 1997 MFL 2.0 16v CDX auto estate with 136k on the clock and probably described as average condition?

General Car Chat / Reducing car collection
« on: 10 January 2023, 19:55:51 »
Well, the car collection is starting to thin out a bit. Had quite a few cars and bikes but now some have got to go because of Khan and ULEZ.

T-reg Golf has already gone in October, my Sierra Sapphire 4x4 sold between Christmas and New Year (for silly money as well), got to move on my Nissan Primera and the Omega soon.

Omega General Help / Poxy cold weather
« on: 15 December 2022, 08:14:20 »
Well, Omega is officially sulking at being used in the cold.

Went to it this morning, cranked multiple times and would not start. Either no fuel or no ignition. Battery started to drain so stopped. Locked and disarmed car again, started straight up.

Left it running to de-ice and warm up, all fine. 2 miles into drive to work with electrics on, suddenly dash lights as engine had cut out with no noticeable warning. Dropped it into neutral @ 20mph, turned the key and fired straight back up, back into Drive and all electrics off except headlamps and heater, all fine into work.

It must know it is going next year…..

General Car Chat / Another (final year)
« on: 08 December 2022, 19:21:18 »
Well, my daily went through the MOT today with no advisories. Just under 136000 miles, only ruse in the usual places on the rear doors.

Unfortunately, it will be its last, certainly under my ownership….. Damn shame.

President Khan means that the old girl will have to go in the new year.

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / X20XEV P0443 Fault Code
« on: 04 October 2022, 19:01:53 »
Hi guys

Managed to get the above P0443 code for “Fuel Tank Vent Valve Circuit High” appear and disappear a few times since Sunday.

Other than locating and replacing the valve and hoping it cures the code, is there any other known issues with these?

Also, where is it located? Back of head by coil pack or over by EGR equipment near PAS bottle? Only reason is that I know I have a bad oil leak from rocker cover on back drivers corner which will be getting fixed this weekend (crappy replacement gasket) and was wondering, if it is near coil pack, could oil leak be affecting it?

Hi everyone, am trying to find the beige trim that goes over the bulbs for the 3rd brake light on the estate models. Mine has got a it warm and managed to brake the retaining clips when I shut the tailgate the other day so joe you just see a white light behind you whenever you brake.

Anyone got one lying around?

Omega General Help / X20XEV aux belt tensioner
« on: 07 November 2021, 07:44:29 »
Has anyone had issues with X20XEV aux belt tensioners losing their tension?

Reason for asking is that I have randomly seen the battery light on full at night intermittently but yesterday drove to Wales and back from Kent and the return journey was in the dark. The light kept changing in luminescence depending on load, wipers, indicators, etc and when the light wa a brighter I thought that maybe I could smell something but at 70mph you won’t hear a belt squealing.

I tried a few things and when I reduced the load by turning the aircon off, the light went out completely after about 5 seconds and stayed out until you turned the aircon back on. This would bring the battery light on about half brightness and then drop down, I suspect as the belt slipped and caught back up with the load.

I am going to check the belt today and probably change it during the week, but was also thinking about the actual tensioner and if it could be the main reason?

Omega General Help / If not one thing it is another…..
« on: 28 May 2021, 06:05:30 »
Blooming typical, just got everything done on the estate, including cleaning the high pressure aircon filler valve and some other niggles, only to have warm air again on the way home yesterday after work.

Got home, checked the aircon pipes, both warm. Removed front grille and whole bottom inch of the condenser is liquid green from the due I put in.

Going to order a condenser today but wondering what easiest way to remove it is on an X20XEV. Don’t really want to disconnect, drain and remove whole radiator as autobox pipes will need disconnecting and that was a pain the last time.

Anyone done this any other ways?

Omega General Help / Random locking issue
« on: 13 March 2021, 11:08:44 »
Have noticed recently that when locking the car with the remote, not always do all the door lock. There will be a random one or 2 that stays unlocked.

Example would be working fine, then lock the car and all but the drivers rear locks. Next time, might be both drivers doors. Then might work for a few times and then passenger rear door (example).

If you press the lock button again to deadlock, they lock. If you unlock and try again, they lock fine. Always unlock fine.

You can tell if one has not locked by the sound. When not working properly, you get like a slurping sound, but a resounding clunk when they all work if that makes sense.

Other thing is that the alarm horn was removed years ago but have put another horn on and still makes no noise, just flashes lights. Even tried a proper car horn with no sound, related?

Power Sounder was binned in 2015 so that gone.

Part of me thinks CDL unit? Have not done a Tech 2 yet but suspect will not show anything.

Car has been used almost daily during last year as well so not due to being left parked up either.

Thoughts?

Omega General Help / Question about sprockets
« on: 13 February 2021, 15:33:13 »
Questions for you all, purely out of boredom really.

Why do some X20xev engines have 2z cam sprockets with both inlet and exhaust locations and markings and others only have this on the exhaust cam but a fixed sprocket on the inlet?

Omega General Help / I give up... roll on 2022
« on: 26 January 2021, 17:39:18 »
As per title, I give up.....

Got all the other bits done on my car, new front crank seal, alternator swapped out, timing belt changed,  all engine oil leaks gone, running well, geometry perfectly straight and now it looks like the head gasket is about to blow in number 3 cylinder. Starts on 3 cylinders whilst it clears the bore then runs fine. Seems to be losing water but no external leaks and compression test cold shows good pressure holding. Lots of white smoke/steam out the back (but not filling the sky amount, yes this could just be cold weather).

Pulled the plugs (replaced 3 weeks ago) and number 3 is “rough” whilst the others are all the same. Bores look okay down the plug holes with a torch so suspect early stages.

Changed the head originally in 2015 when it went then and swapped to a known good head as original was badly pitted and removing top left exhaust nut snapped the stud as usual.

So looks like next week I may be ripping it all to pieces again.

Omega General Help / Oil from intake throttle body pipe
« on: 15 December 2020, 05:50:05 »
Have looked through the search facility and can not find anything particularly relevant so, question out to the masses....

I have always had oil residue coming from the intake elbow by the throttle body since I owned the car in 2013.
Breathers have been cleaned previously, small air breather hole in the manifold as well.
Car has the modified breather (flame trap box) and breather metal pipe to block removed and cleaned
Idle is good
Cam cover had been removed previously and completely cleaned out through all sections about a year ago, (they were blocked as you would expect), gasket was not leaking when removed, nor now
ISCV is not blocked
Emissions are good 0.03% CO, 14ppm HC.

Oil level only goes down due to leaking front crank seal.

Logically, this would have positive crank pressure but I can see no obvious reason unless it is so obvious I am missing it. I was under the car the other day in work and noticed that the whole bottom of the inlet manifold is soaked in oil residue so, as I like clean engine bays, this is unacceptable and needs fixing.

My old X20XEV Cavalier used to do it as well but that was sold before I could be bothered to look at it.

I have a few days off before Christmas this year (1st time in 17 years) so want to get a few jobs done on all the car.

Front crank seal being done, levels all checked and car to be gone through completely if possible (hence trip to ramp in work last weekend). Will be rechecking all of the above anyway as a matter of course) but any other thoughts or ideas are welcomed.

General Car Chat / Another year, another MOT
« on: 05 December 2020, 11:39:46 »
Well, the old hearse has been in for MOT again today, only 4.5k since last one compared to average of 6.5k per year previously.

No advisories and emission 0.03% with HC of 14. I’ll take that all day long.

Am going to take the sill extensions off over Christmas and have a look there as I think that must be getting scabby by now though.
