IIRC the front hub nut on a mk4 escort is M32.

Or at least if its not, I really have no idea why I bought the one that's sitting in the top of my toolbox  :-\

You're confusing the nut size with the thread - an M32 thread would need something like a 70mm spanner! Similarly, you often hear people asking for 10mm bolts, when what they actually mean is an M6 thread with a 10mm hex head.

This is the only size I can guess correctly 100% when I need a spanner. It's just so common.

That always got my goat when other mechanics had no clue about spanner/thread size, then I was taught proper !

there was quite a choice back in the olden days though  ::) ...Whitworth, UNC, UNF, BSF, BA, BSP etc etc

I know there are various metric fine but they're not your common or garden fastener of choice  ;)

It's been bugging me since I posted this, so I checked the MGF cv joint I have - it's a 32mm hex, on an M22x1.5mm pitch thread. Your Escort will be very similar, if it isn't the identical joint.

Yes when I started it was all of those sizes, in fact we only had one set of open ended metric spanners in the garage. Now metric are the only tools in my roll cab( but I still have all my old kit in a cantilever box, proper old school)

You're right, I am.   :-X

I thought the M in M32 meant metric, you learn something new every day.

I can only imagine M32 would be on nothing smaller than bridges, or ships!

Do we have to guess what the new one is?

Who do you think I am, Opti?!

Anyway, these days some of the older forum members may not survive the suspense  :D.

We had a BMW iX.

The plan is to go down from three cars to two (keeping it and the galaxy). Made decent financial sense, and it's a really nice car to drive/be in, albeit exceptionally fugly from the front.

Doesn't matter what it looks like these days, I find most cars, in each class, look pretty much the same. The days when a badge made any difference are long gone, beemers, mercs, etc are everywhere. Even a Porsche or the like don't really turn heads nowadays. As long as it suits your requirements and is enjoyable to drive, what else do you need?
I've been longing to ditch my astra for ages, but had no clue what I wanted. So I sat down and wrote a list of requirements, leaving out the status and looks and general desirability. I soon realised that the astra fitted the bill perfectly.

Unfortunately you are correct, these days pretty much all cars are the same in pretty much all respects.

Anyway, I hope we both like it when it arrives, we'll be doing 20,000 miles a year in it.  ;D

I found a 32mm socket in my toolchest today - purchased to change the driveshaft on my neighbours car about 30 years ago and not used since.

I do around 18,000 in my astra, which is why one of my requirements was around 50mpg.

Fitted a new battery to the Galaxy's power sounder yesterday. Really struggled to get enough heat into the solder to get the old battery legs out of the circuit board cleanly. I then noticed that there was corrosion on the board that I hadn't noticed before so gave it as good a clean as I could before putting back together but not confident it would work.

Today had a pig of a job getting a socket to fit the swollen wheel nuts. Got the wheel off, wheelarch liner out & power sounder fitted. Power sounder popped the fuse straight away  >:(

Took the power sounder back out and binned it.

Assembly is the reverse of disassembly....... but I couldn't get the socket off the wheel nuts. The worst one took 45 minutes. Finished up cutting off the stainless steel covers so one wheel now needs a 20mm socket to get the nuts off.

 >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(

Those covered wheel studs really are a sh!t idea aren't they?! They're high on my list to replace with something better on our galaxy. Just as soon as I figure out what that is... :-\
