From what I've just read about this they seem to be saying that something being carried on the back of a truck hit it.Would imagine this to be a busy route at best of times, never mind a bank holiday weekend!

Pictures I saw showed a lorry with a skip loader and excavator on the back just past the bridge - the text implied the excavator boom hit the pedestrian bridge bringing it down

Here we go - second picture here explains the cause: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-kent-37204050

As it's dropped (thanks to the excavator) it's neatly sliced the roof off the truck alongside; luckily it looks like it just grazed the roof of his cab as it was on it's way down otherwise it would have been very nasty indeed!

Just looked at lots of different photos, the 360 on the low-loader hasn't moved, and is loaded correctly, the low loader was on the hard shoulder, now if the lowest point of that bridge is below 16'6 (5.1m) it should have been signed, also hope it had the locks in the boom.
The guy on the bike was lucky, hope he bought a lottery ticket, and polleys daf and trailer is a bit twisted, (one less cowboy).
The question is why did it collapse ?

The bridge appears to have been pushed off it's bearings.

I am curious about why the bridge had temporary fencing attached to the handrails - maybe it was having maintenance work done? or already earmarked for replacement :-\

That half of the bridge off the span effectively floats in place, so knocking it off wouldn't actually  take much.
My former colleagues have the digger on their lowloader, but I can't imagine how ithit that particular bridge and not the others that are along that stretch of the motorway. The digger doesn't appear to be damaged enough at all to have cause the wreckage.

There is more to this than is reported, and guessing is a fun armchair job with a cold beer.

My money is on the artic in lane one hitting it as the Crane clearly shows no damage... Had it hit the bridge there would probably be a scratch or two visible ::)

An aerial shot appears to show that the bridge beam folded just where the arm of the excavator hit it is.

I think the bridge sloped down so that the least headroom was over the hard shoulder where the excavator is.

I wonder how fast the trucks were going. Must have pulled some serious G if faster than 40mph  :o

I've had bits of debris rain down on me before when excavator booms have clipped bridges on the A1M.  >:( I don't think they pay much attention to the level change when they're resurfacing and clearly the bridge was never designed to be used with a re-inforced live lane hard shoulder.  ::)

Because that's what hard shoulders are for these days. I take it you don't have "managed" motorways in your neck of the woods? Lucky you!
