Batley and Spen by-election.
« on: 30 June 2021, 14:05:44 »

Interesting one this.

Kim Leadbeater is the Labour candidate and sister of murdered Jo Cox.

Batley Grammar school still seems to have a teacher in hiding in fear for his life.

Gorgeous George Galloway is also in the mix.

Yes. The Labour party thought it would make political capital out of the Muslim/Hindu dislike of one another.

India and Pakistan are not the best of mates, to say the least, so there was a great opportunity for Labour to exploit this when Boris met with Modi.

All done in the name of 'inclusion' of course. ::)

I suspect Andy Burnham will be the leader before long. He seems the only figure in Labour who id presentable, plausible and who might win back the seats in the North.

How about the delightful Dawn Butler as new leader.......with the equally delightful Diane Abbott as chancellor?

And then there's the practical side: he's not an MP, so he would need to find a seat, get selected as the candidate, wait for an election, win that election and finally get elected as leader of the party. That would suggest he's not going to be the next leader of the Labour Party.

Starmer's problem is that he's a centrist having to deal with the consequences of the  stroppy side of the party getting their idea of a leader elected. That has prevented the whole party devising a manifesto to fight the next election, and they need to do that soon. It also led to the initial few months of helping Johnson make an even bigger tit of himself - which is like shooting fish in a barrel for anyone whose mouth is connected to their brain - in parliament be wasted, rather than built upon.

Its not that long ago that our current PM was in exactly the same position.
I doubt Burnham will be the next leader, but will follow the next one who will be an interim leader until he positions himself ready to take over.

He showed his true form during that spat over bailout money.

He was being interviewed on national tellbox when he was told that they (we >:() were sending a shed load of extra cash that he had essentially demanded (because we all know how well Labour councils can budget), yet he still went out not twenty minutes later to cry at the cameras about how Westminster were refusing to pay anything.

He wouldn't have left running John Lewis to go into politics if there wasn't something in it for him.
