Coolant transfer pipe o-ring

I've searched based on what I think it's called, but most results seem to refer to a pipe by the thermostat. The thing I'm talking about is the big one that runs from the rad to the back of the block.


Does it have an o-ring at the block end? And if so, does anyone have a part number or size for it please? There's a slight coolant leak at the joint, and before I undo it, it'd be a good idea to have a replacement to hand, if there's one needed.  :y

Looks like it's GM# 9128362. And not cheap. I would imagine that any good seal supplier should have something suitable. Can you get the old seal off and measure it? If the engine is out of the car as in your photo should be a lot easier.

Indeed, that's the problem with me using an old pic to clearly show where I'm talking about. The engine is fully dressed at the moment and full of coolant.  :-\


At least I now know its 37mm, but not yet whether that's ID or OD, and thus what thickness it is. Searching the Saab parts suppliers off the back of that part number wasn't really turning anything up either. Ah well, if nobody else pipes up beforehand, I'll just have to solve the mystery when I get to it - luckily I'm in no real rush...  :y

You can't suggest that! It will downgrade several GM Original Parts Supply VirginsTM and where would we be then?

Isn't that dielectric grease for waterproofing towing hitch electrical connectors and similar?

The seal in question is between the engine block and transfer pipe. Wouldn't it be better to smear some grey high temp RTV onto the old seal instead?

It was there for comedic effect - obviously on a different wavelength.


Like I said, I'll see what gives when I take it apart. A smear of Hylomar Blue has usually been sufficient over the years with the cooling on the Capri.

Well that was messier than I'd planned. I didn't count on there still being so much coolant left up high after draining the rad  :-\


Right, well to answer my own question the seal is 37mm ID, 41mm OD and is currently about 1.2mm thick. However the groove it sits in is about 1.2 and a smidge millimetres deep  ::)


Over the last twenty four years and however many miles, it's baked itself a little dry and shrunk. It may have originally been an o-ring and got absolutely squashed, or it may have been flat to start with. I'll have to browse the Yellow Pages and talk to some seal folks to see if they've anything suitable. Meantime I'll maybe try soaking it in coolant to get a bit of life back in it, then pop it in with a smear of Hylomar and see if that does the trick - it's easy enough to trial, in the grand scheme of things ...

Join the ends with a spot of super glue and you're done. This probably isn't a solution for a high pressure/temperature system, but a car's cooling system is neither of those

If the groove in the aluminium pipe is 37mm ID and 41mm OD, then the O ring is probably supposed to be 2mm section. Summut like this:

You're probably right, and a quick check of O-ring specs would prove which size is actually required :y
