ECU Coolant temp plug mix up
« on: 26 April 2023, 11:22:21 »

As usual I never took photos when stripping this down, it's been since late last Year so a bit hazy with where these plugs go.

i remember reading on a post somewhere on here that you can mix up the plug for the CTS with another plug. Now that I have read that, I am starting to wonder if I have the right plug on the CTS now because there is 2 plugs coming out the same loom.

https://photos.app.goo.gl/mpcH3bcNn6dUa1396

I plugged one in that seemed to more naturally sit at that point but since I've moved the whole wiring loom back up over the rocker on passenger side, both plugs sit where the sensor is.

i can't remember what else it was that had a plug like this about there?

Also this big blue multiplug is peeking at me from the back passenger side, again I can't remember what if anything that plugged into it, or is it a spare/diagnostic plug or something?

From memory its the CTS and Purge plugs that can be mixed, and they a relatively close to each other.

Found the big blue plug it must be the one off the end of the injectors. Don't have a clue about the purge valve, I don't mind taking anything else like that off and can't see any other plugs on the manifold anywhere. Maybe it's been left off by previous owner for some reason?

From the tank, and because I am pissed, I need to explain it from the beginning, there's a pipe that follows the fuel lines to the front right wing. It goes the the carbon cannister behind the wheel arch (drop the liner and you can't miss it), and then it goes through the inner wing to the breather on the back of the block behind the 135 head.

Betwee the inner wing and the breather is an electrically controlled valve... aka the purge valve. It is switched by 12v from the ECU.

It is perfectly possible, because I have done it without realising, to swap the plug with the ECU temp sensor. Which runs at 5v. And will default to either - 40°C or whatever positive temperature it is designed for. Either way the fuelling will be further apart than a pair  Jordans shoes ;)

Basically get them switched, then the purge valve won't work (environmental BS, who cares) and the coolant send or gets fried.

The blue injector plug is a separate item and cannot possibly be confused with anything  ;D

Follow the plumbing and locate the valve.

Thanks for your (Imbibed) reply DG  :y

It would make sense the one i've plugged in to CTS is the one for the purge as the wiring on it is much longer (so it can reach purge) than the other one, which is just neat enough to reach the CTS. That's my thinking anyway.

The thing that's getting me is I don't remember unplugging the purge, so I'm starting to wonder if that was left off by someone else. Either way I'll get it all plugged back together and see what's what.

For anyone wondering there is a bit of a thread here on the purge where it tells you about mixing up the plugs, and simple test for it as well.

i'm afraid I can't see anything that looks like a valve, is it supposed to be as per this picture or different on the later engines?

The red circled one:

Heres a picture of that areas in mine, rock all I can see:

Like I said in my post the other day...

Follow the plumbing from the carbon cannister.

I don't recall my late face lift valve looking like the one in the picture, but you can see how the plugs can be confused in the harness.

Also, is this the car with persistent rough running? As leaving that valve out would cause a vacuum leak all the way to the tank.

I did however miss this, can anyone see what I left out lol

Wondering what that chuffing noise was when I tried to start it!

When I was putting in the little coolant plug drain as well, the head snapped off it on last tighten. Seems to be holding pressure though.
