Car Parts, bits For Sale & Wanted / Wanted: 2.5TD Diesel Flywheel
« on: 17 January 2014, 22:58:24 »
Hi Guys,

I'm currently after two manual flywheels for the 2.5TD engine. If you know of any going cheapish, please let me know. Surface condition isn't important, neither is the clutch (tbh, I don't really need the clutch/pressure plate at all) - providing the dual mass part is fine.

To cut a long story short, they will be going in my boat (unless my funds run out first that is!) hence the need for two!

Let me know what you've got. Even if its just one!

Cheers

Ian

General Car Chat / Head Gasket Update
« on: 13 December 2011, 23:52:13 »
I guess most will have seen this thread : http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/index.php?topic=96453.0;all

Well... this afternoon I've started the strip down...

Fairly straight forward so far. Whats so hard about the 'B' bolt? Ok PAS pipe is in a stupid place, but bend it out the way and your sorted, took all of 2 mins to get the B bolt out? However the coolant transfer bolts are a real pain in the back side! Would be easier if the oil cooler pipes weren't there too, but hay ho. Also guess a ratchet spanner on the bottom bolt would speed things up a bit.

Anyways, heres some photos showing how far I've got to:

I spy with my little eye something beginning with 'V'  :) :)

Theres something cool about camshafts....

Oh and if your wondering why the oil doesn't look 'milky', its because I changed it about 10 miles before stripping her down.

Omega General Help / Water in the oil... help! (V6)
« on: 01 December 2011, 14:18:41 »
For about 3 years, the Omega (3.0 V6) has slowly been using water - however I've never been able to trace where its gone! We are talking maybe a litre or so every 2000 miles or so. (however it was random, sometimes it wouldn't use any for a couple of months)

Now it has all of a sudden just started drinking the stuff!

Couple of weeks ago I went from York to Leicester, and it used about a litre of water (this was a 120 mile trip - sat at 70ish mph all the way) and then around half a litre on the way back home (sat around 80 mph ish).

Again, there was no trace of where the water was going... (checked for leaks, checked oil etc.. all fine)

However, today I have just topped the coolant up (again!), and the dreaded dip stick is just starting to show signs of water in the oil (the oil colour is ever so slightly pale in colour).

What would cause this? There is NO oil in the water, however there IS water in the oil.

Does this rule out the Oil Cooler, since theres no oil in the water?

I hope its not the head gasket...

Any ideas guys?

Cheers

General Car Chat / Wheres the best place to get drop links?
« on: 05 October 2011, 18:46:53 »
As above, my OSF is desperately in need of a new drop link... its banging like crazy!

Are the ebay ones any good?

How much are GM ones?

Don’t do a lot of mileage - around 6k a year.

Whats your thoughs?  ???

Note: It is recommended that you wear an ESP strap once the cover is removed to protect the electronic components inside from static electric.

1) Remove the ECU from the car (This can be found under the bonnet, in the plastic box to the right of the battery). Unbolt it from its mounting bracket.

2) Carefully bend back the 8 Tabs on the back of the ECU casing using a small flat head screwdriver.

Before

After

3) Now remove the ECU cover, and unclip the white plastic ECU chip holder.

4) Carefully lift the ECU chip from its socket using a small flat head screw driver. Lift the ecu up a fraction at each end until it can be removed. Store this in an ANTI STATIC bag / container.

Standard Chip in place

Chip removed

5) Insert the new chip into the socket, make sure the chip is inserted to correct way around.

6) Now repeat steps 4-1 in reverse! :y

7) Notify your insurance of your modification  :y

I’ve stripped out the full loom from the front of the Omega for a kit car project.

I then grabbed the wire cutters and started to chop wires (at quite an alarming rate I must add!   :o:-X) for everything that I assumed wasn’t necessary.

Anyway, about an hour and a bit later I had a BIG pile of scrap, and a more reasonably sized loom.

I thought I had chopped everything from the loom that wasn't needed, however when I came to do a bench test on it, getting "My Naff Code Reader" to talk to ecu etc I discovered a problem....

I’ve chopped a wire which comes from the immobiliser aerial thing (brown/red).

Other than that, everything seems fine. "My Naff Code Reader" talks to engine ECU, and reports all sensors are working fine.

"My Naff Code Reader" also talks to Immobiliser and says that the correct key is present - however there is a fault code - didn’t not it down, but IIRC it said '19? voltage low' or something? (will try to rescan codes tomorrow) – It wasn’t a flat battery either that was 12.6v :y

Then engine light on the dash isn't flashing, so it recognises the key however it wont allow me to crank the engine over. Switch ignition on without the key near the immobiliser aerial, and the engine light flashes (as it should).

So I’m VERY nearly there.

I suspect that the immobiliser thinks that either the cars locked or alarmed?

And hence, I guess something needs to be applied to the brown/red wire. However what does it need to be? +5v? +12v? Ground? Or (hope its not) data?

Any ideas? :-? :-?

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Xenon Headlight Leveling...
« on: 01 August 2009, 10:20:57 »
I've had the Low Fld Vision message pop up on the MID the other week, so plugged my laptop in to see what the problem was - It was to do with the front level sensor.

Anyway, I removed the front sensor, and then pulled the front cover off. The insides were wet  :'(

Left it to dry out, and then put it all back together and fitted it to the mig.

All going well, no error message on the screen. Live data on the laptop showed the sensor working as its voltage changed as I bounced the front of the car  ;D

BUT, my lights are now pointing too heigh all the time. Last night on dipped beam, the cats eyes were lit up like a runway for almost a mile infront of me! ::) (must admit, it was very impressive!  ;D)

Is it likely that the sensor's damaged by the water?
Or do the lights need resetting back to their normal position or something? Also what voltage should the front sensor be at when its parked on level ground?

How can I switch the AC cooling fans on to low speed?

Do I  need to short a relay Or is there a little diagnostic socket under there which I can bridge?

Its for the TD Elite BTW

When I lock / Unlock the car, only the N/S bulbs flash  :-?

That’s not too important, but now, they flash for a second, and then remain on (sometimes go off after a few mins, other times it can take 30-40 mins). I have to lock/unlock the car a few times to get them to go off, or pull out a fuse (cant remember which one, but its 20a – 17 rings a bell??).

The car will indicate right fine, but if I indicate left, they light up but don’t flash???

Sounds a bit like a sticking relay, but which one, and where its it!  :-/ Or is it the alarm box having a tantrum? >:(

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Omega Battery Sizes
« on: 08 April 2008, 13:31:25 »
I’m thinking about changing the battery in my Omega, and wondered what the biggest size battery could be fitted.

To cut a long story short, I left the radio on the other day for maybe 2 hrs while I cleaned the car. And when I went to start the car, the engine didn’t crank over very fast (it still started though  :))

I would have thought that the battery should have lasted over 2 hrs without any noticeable effects, or would you say that slow cranking is to be expected?

Normally I wouldn't worry too much about the battery going flat as all the cars I’ve had up to now have been manuals. So worst case, I can bump start it. The Omega is an Auto, so that’s not an option. To make matters worse, I often spend a couple of hours sat in the car in high lay-bys / top of hills etc down very quiet roads for radio work. So if my battery dies on me I’m buggered! :-[

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Carin Sat Nav problem....
« on: 11 February 2008, 14:50:46 »
Sat nav in my elite doesn't work  :(

It says 'CD Error' and spits it back out again. Ive tried two cd's and it does it to both of them. I have tried a CD lense cleaner and that hasn't worked.

Anyone got any ideas? :-?

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Electric Seat Problem
« on: 15 January 2008, 10:49:31 »
The driver’s seat on my Elite won’t move all the way forwards. It goes all the way back, and then only about 2" forwards, it’s not much of a problem for me, but it would be nice to have it working properly.

Anyone got any ideas?

I’ve checked that there’s nothing fallen into the rails (like coin etc) and can't see anything. :-/

Omega General Help / On going problems with the old barge...
« on: 07 February 2010, 18:04:35 »
For the people that don’t know about the problems I've been having...

I've been having problems with my Omega V6 where on and off over the last couple of months every now and then it would start running really rough. Recently on an 4 mile trip to work it would cut out 3-4 times each way  :o.

Couple of weeks ago the cutting out then turned into 'breaking down!' where it wouldn’t always start back up.

Anyway, read codes, and there was 19. Me thinking 'Thank god I've got the crankshaft code' - assuming that must have been causing the problems all along!

Fitted new sensor last week maybe? All seemed fine.

However yesterday I went on a bit of a run at a steady 80mph (normally it sits in town with the odd few 50-60 mph A roads couple of times a week) and noticed that randomly it was as if the engine was cutting out for a second, and then returning back to normal. It would do this some times a few times every 30 seconds or so, then I would do 5 miles without any problems??? (This was what it was doing before the crankshaft sensor was replaced aswell as the running rough)

Anyway..

Today, I changed the Oil + Filter and noticed that there was a random clicking sound from under the bonnet when it was ticking over.

After opening the bonnet I noticed that every time a relay clicked, the intake valve at the front of the engine briefly flipped open/closed!

It’s a purple relay that’s clicking, and looking at these diagrams  (http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1176542235) it appears to be the fuel pump relay.

Now shouldn’t the fuel pump relay click on and stay on once the engines running?  :-/ :-/ :'(

Omega General Help / Another 'Crank shaft sensor problems...'
« on: 22 January 2010, 13:25:57 »
I guess my sensor is on the blink!

Last few months on and off the car has started to misfire randomly for a few seconds, then all go back to normal. When the problem started, it would only run rough maybe once a week at the most. However as time's gone by, its now becoming more or a problem, infact its now cutting out sometimes up to a couple of times a day and misfiring at least once every few minuets (and yesterday it refused to restart until I rolled to the side of the road parked up for 5 mins).

I’m wanting to fit a new sensor as its got a second hand one fitted at the moment anyway.

So does anyone know what the correct part number for the sensor is? It’s for my 199 R-reg 3.0 Elite.
