Omega General Help / ODBII only read codes with engine running

On my 3.2L Omega 2002

I have a problem with my ODBII port, I can't read any codes with only IGN on, it read with engine running.

When I was at the inspection the other day they mentioned this but didn't give me any remarks on it.
So by that I conclude that the problem is in the car


Why is that, it has been working properly earlier, could it be something broken in the connector?

the correct Gates one is still readily available from Autodoc online.

But are they older than the ones on the car. I would imagine everything now is (very) old stock.

No idea.  The Autodoc stock comes in from Poland/Germany and is for the Opel as well as Vauxhall  Omega, plus goodness what else. As long as they last the 4 years on the engine that is all I care about.

Surely  they didn't stop making them on the same day they stopped making the cars

According to the list for the cambelt kits they were also used in SAAB 9-5 until December 2009.

On my 2002 3.2L Sport my cats are rattling and I have bought a new set.

I know it can be problematic to unscrew the nuts on manifolds and I wonder if there is a good method to do this without breaking the bolts holding the cats to the manifold.

Should I heat the nuts? Or can it be done without heating and still not breaking the bolts.

Appreciate any advice.

If you are in Sweden you can find those O-rings at a SAAB-dealer/shop. They have a different partnumber but it is the same O-rings.

There are also two different thermostats, the one to the left is for later years, the other one is difficult to get down between the cylinder heads.

I used a simple rubber band to keep the ball in on one of my Omegas. It worked but the band broke after a a few months, just put in a new one and drive on. The display showed the error message when it was broken.

The most common problem with the wipers is that the shaft that holds the wiper arms size up and eventually freeze.

You can take them apart and clean them up, then grease them and then they will run freely.

This is why it is so important to get an authorized independent evaluation of old cars that are in good condition.
It will cost you a small sum to get it but if you have such a document it is a lot easier to get the proper amount for your car. It might also raise the insurance fee but it is worth it.

My 3.2L Omega, in mint condition, is valued to €6000 and my insurance company accept it.

If you don't have an valuation and your car is stolen, burned to the ground or totalled beyond recognition you will get the market value and that is in our case €400 at the top.

I found a rubber plug on the fire wall, next to the brake booster. I suppose this whole is for the clutch pedal if you have a manual gearbox. I drilled a hole in it and pulled a cable sheet through it. On the inside I routed the sheet in to the center console and back to the end of it.
The other end of the sheet went to the relay box where I put a new relay to control the feed to the power outlet. The relay get its switch power from the ignition ON. I already have another relay there for my daylight driving lights (former fog lights).

So the power outlet will only have power when ignition is on, that will be OK for me since this will mostly be used when driving to keep the temperature in the cooler.

To clear your minds about my cooler in my Omega I in fact do some long runs with them ( I have two ). When the Corona is over I'm going down to Europe from Sweden, it's around 2500 miles round trip. On my way back I buy some really delicious German Bratwursts and some other good things to eat. That's when the cooler come in to do its duty and keep my fresh meat cool on my way home. It's about 12 hours drive from Hamburg over Denmark to my home.

It is really nice to let my 3.2L Omega stretch her legs on Autobahn. Last time was in September 2019, Corona stopped my travelling plans last year and I hope I can go for a new run later this year.
