Title: £3k Challenge.
Post by: Admin on 06 May 2007, 19:45:32
A bit of fun.

You have £3k to spend on a car. Just something you would quite like.
It does not have to be practical, just something you always fancied, but have never had.

Only rule is, it can't be an Omega! ;)

For me, a 300zx (may take some time to find a good one at that price!)
Just always loved the shape and a twin turbo V6 will certainly be fun!

I'll raise you a BMW Isetta!  ;) ;D

This is a tough one.  I've had an ur-Quattro which is still top of my list.  I'm being a bit serious about the Isetta and similar, not sure what the prices are though.  If it isn't something really old and quirky then probably just a motorbike.  Never had one, too impractical.

The Mondeo is a fine car, but Finn is the only one that has actually mentioned interesting cars that aren't based on practicality.  C'mon!

Well so far, only Mark come up with something really original (although I prefer my choice! ;)).
Oh and I like Omega V6CD's taste!  8-)

Although I have had one before, I'd have a mint Citroen Bx16v. Finding one could be tricky though as moronic chavs remove the engines and stick them in 205's not knowing that the BX would murder it on handling!  ::)

It would cost a LOT less than 3k, goes very well, and has astounding handling which would then allow me to prove a point to a certain other Admin!  :P

In response to Laidback............... ;D

Hang about Grandad! You even admitted to me that teh Maestro TURBO was entertaining. A very underestimated car ineed. My Montego Turbo used to embarress the hell out of a lot of boy racers. Apprarently, it once did 137mph on the M11 before the driver bottled out and stood on the brakes, at which point he or she (whoever it was) then discovered the art of brake fade!!!!!

All the same a great car.

OK, so my next contribution?

£3000 would get you a simply great XJS  HE v12. Now, like them or loathe them, they have stunning engines and great power.

Want sometghing unusual???? Try (if you are lucky) an Aston Martin Lagonda. You can get them very cheap now. A simply awsome car that needs very little work every five minutes - honest! But a great and rather radical motor car.

hmmm...

3K doesnt get a lot these days, especially once the car gains an owners club, it all goes a bit money money money......

Capri 2.8 injection special
Porsche 924 TURBO (not the normal one) this was a wolf in sheeps clothing, 0-60 in 7 sec and genuine 150mph, 50-50 weight distribution, beautiful handling, all from a 2.0 and in a bodystyle that was slated for being a poor mans porsche (or a rich mans VW)
Maestro Turbo, another torque steer special, but a shed load of fun non the less.
Alfa Romeo GTV V6, not the current one, the 80's model, the engine noise was to die for.
Lancia delta turbo, another quick car, possibly because they rusted so fast and so had no bodywieght
Golf Ralley - only available in LHD, boxed arches and the G60 engine
Corrado VR6 or G60, one of the prettiest coupes of the 90's, still looks prettier that a lot of modern stuff

i could go on forever

Sorry Theo, I forgot about yours.  :-[ That truly is original!

Scorpio Cossie? Drove one the other week.... £3k? I wouldn't give you £300 for one.
Nice seats though...

2.8 Capri! Oh yes!  :D
One of those cars that is, let's be honest, really not very good, but just has that certain "something"!

Yes the Maestro Turbo would be.... interesting!  ;D

GTV V6 (80's). Mmmm now there is a car! Shame they rust so badly.
Lancia Delta. Always wanted to try one out!
The Italians make some wonderful cars. Not remotely reliable, or well built, but wonderful all the same!  :)

Corrado G60. A freind had one in the late 90's. Damn quick and seemed to handle well as I recall.
Had the typically German interior, basic, plastic and black!

Fin. XJS V12??
Having had the XJ12 (briefly!) I will say the engine is silky smooth and also the biggest and most ridiculously laid out thing I have ever seen!
Oh, and £3k for a Lagonda? Wind your neck in!  ;D

I want a fully restored Avenger estate with aftermarket aircon, tuned 1600 (90mm pistons) on throttle bodies (130 to 140 in non race) forest suspension (standard height but stiffer), now you lot are wondering where you can get tuning bits for an estate car, easy the Sunbeam & Avenger are very closely related. I think £3000 would cover a restoration and engine build.

Many years ago I had an MG Montego Turbo. Modified with uprated suspension, brakes, extra boost ect. It would do 0-60 in 6.0 seconds dead, and on the A13 one day(new stretch past 5 bells just after it was opened) I had had it flat since from sadlers farm (2 or 3 miles) both rev counter and speedo went off the scale, thats 150 mph ;D. It was an absolute weapon.

Yes they were related - the Sunbeam was a shortened Avenger.

For 3K I would love to have a perfect Humber Sceptre - the Hillman Hunter shape, preferably pre '72 or a perfect Sunbeam Tiger / Alpine.

There is no modern metal that excites me to be honest.

It does not have to be practical, just something you always fancied, but have never had.

Only rule is, it can't be an Omega! ;)

For me, a 300zx (may take some time to find a good one at that price!)

A technicality on LB66's original terms & conditions...

It doesnt specify that the £3000 must be used to buy the car outright  :-/

So......

I'm spending mine on the deposit for a Monaro  ;D

If you're hankering after a Wankel go for the original!

I can't find any RX3's or 4's, did those not come over here?

RO80, now there was a car ahead of its time......

The RX2, 3 and 4 were imported into the UK in very small numbers, the old man had a RX2 and it went like a rocket, once you got it up to about 100MPH the engine used to whistle, it was mad, nothing in its class could catch it.

Mazda were an unknown, hence the reason why they didnt sell in great numbers, only when the RX7 came out did it all take off for them, initially the problem with the rotor tips haunted Mazda, but they got that sorted pretty quickly.

I have been looking at the RX8 recently, lovely looking car and the coolness of the suicide doors as well

I was thinking along the same lines as Markie...

£3k as a downpayment for this (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1996-Dodge-viper-Venom-convertible_W0QQitemZ320111432026QQihZ011QQcategoryZ18306QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem)...

or I'd get this (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Fiat-127-1050C-with-Sport-parts-added_W0QQitemZ250111921013QQihZ015QQcategoryZ18305QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem) and use what was left to shoehorn in a bigger engine. The Sport model came with a 1.3l but I'm sure I could get something a little bigger in there. ;D

I think I'd go out and buy a mundane old classic of some sort - Morris Traveller or an Anglia, perhaps Escort Mk 2, keep it looking pretty standard and tatty outside and drop a modern 16 valver into it.

I'd then go out playing with boy racers.

I have so many cars I'd like to buy for £3k!

Some of these I've already had..................

MKIII Supra Turbo, (Yes LB you're absolutely right about the CHGs but I love those headlights!  8-) )
MKIII Cortina, (Preferably a two door.)
MK I Granada Coupe
MKII Granada 2.8i GhiaX Executive.
Rover P6 3500 VIP,
1980 Pontiac Trans Am, (Might be pushing it to get one of them for £3k now mind)
Overfinch 'Classic' Range Rover,
Vauxhall Ventora or VX
Vauxhall Magnum
Vauxhall Senator/Carlton GSI/Diamond
Opel Manta Coupe
Citroen CX Familiale
Chevrolet Corvette, (I have seen them for sale for £3k!!)

I'm sure there're many more, but they're the one's that spring to mind.

Probably can't get a decent Triumph Stag for £3k so maybe a 2.5S....

Is there such a thing as a "decent" Triumph Stag?  ;)

If we're talking Triumph it has to be a TR4a or a GT6  :-* . Anyway, back to our 3K budget... ::)

Always fancied a P6 rover (V8, of course). I bet they'd seem pretty primitive (and slow, and thirsty) compared to an Omega these days though...

I would prefer the TR5 or at a push the TR250 (although 3k would probably only get me a ride in one). A number of years ago I had a very nice 3.9 TR7 V8 which the previous owner had spent over £14000 building and then sold to me at a knock down price. Unfortunately marriage was the end of that love affair :'(

I would have to go for a Mitsubishi Starion 2.6 Turbo.  Get it painted in rally colours.

Lurvely.

have to agree with laidback66, would have to be the import version which has shorter wheelbase, wouldn't want to put anything init to weiugh it down, have driven a 450+ bhp version and they r a hoot, no traction control the back rubbers smoke all the way to the the big number on the stick
