Found out why there are so many meegas in Nott'm
« on: 12 October 2006, 21:40:01 »

Nice looking place.  :)  Main reason though is that Omega sat-nav knows the way in but not the way out.  It's a conspiracy to keep you there!  *&%$$@%^*) thing sent me through/round the center several times.  Wanted me to go the wrong way on one-way streets, take the bus only streets, etc.  When I finally found a sign for the M1 it told me to do a u-turn!!! >:( >:( >:(

I used to have one of those things in a Toyota Avensis (company car  -  no choice).  Called it "The B*t*h who lives in my car" Forkin useless thing.  Couldn't even find my own house!

I was working in a small village called Prion in deepest darkest North Wales yesterday and im glad I was in the wifes Rover as the TomTom took me down lanes that narrow the sides of the Meega would have no paint left on them :o

A mate of mine guided by gps ended up driving down a single track road in a transit minibus on a supposedly public road only to be confronted by a chain across the carridgeway he ended up having to reverse a mile and a half to continue his journney !!!:o

My TOMTOM sometimes tries to take you down bus lanes and down blocked off roads when set to 'shortest' route  :( and even sometimes narrow alleyways  :o

I sometimes check it for the 'shortest' A to B if I can think of more than one possible route and undecided which is the shortest way......if its picked a daft or impossible route then I either go the way I want to bearing in mind trafic conditions or ask my passenger which way they usually get taken  ;)

So just goes to show that even if you have SatNav you still have to have local knowledge not to get caught out by them  ;D

Mine is most useful when I get sent down a pickup address way out in the sticks somewhere, they usually send the postcode as well.

Altho now we have a new system fitted in our cars, and if the computer knows where the pickup address is, it sends you down a map, highlighting where it is. Very useful feature  :)

SatNav is great as long as you only use it as a guide.

My best advice is - don't use "shortest" route" on a TomTom in Devon or Dorset. It has a habit of taking you down single track roads that are far too narrow for an Omega (and in some cases, a push bike!). It once told me to turn right off the A39, I looked and couldn't actually see a road, then I saw it - A concrete farm track starting 20 yards across a field.  [smiley=angry.gif] The TomTom nearly went for a flying lesson out of the window until I realised that "Fastest route" is the only one to use in that area (ie. keeps you on roads with signs and tarmac).

It should have a "only take me on routes through civilisation" setting. This would be good in some cities as well! [smiley=grin.gif]

And a keep me out of the red light district / drug dealers cribs mode

(only just realised how to quote just a portion of something  - too late now though)

When on hols, I frequently set to shortest route, even in rural places like Cornwall. You end up in some really interesting, picturesque places.  And learn how to reverse several miles...

Friends of my in-laws live in Devon and they were out in his new Jag XJ one day about a year ago.

He'd bought a Tom-Tom and swore by it.

Don't know where they were going exactly, but it directed them to a ford. Thinking that the Tom-Tom knew what it was talking about he carried on through until he grounded it on a step with water halfway up the doors. He's disabled, so my father in law had to climb out of the window to shout for help.

Eventually a tractor driver came along and towed them out. He said that if he was getting sick of it. Apparently it happens a few times a week. Generally OAP's, (the in-laws), or tourists in hire cars.

Unfortunately the exhaust on the Jag was a write off.

The problems of relying on technology.
I tend to use TomTom to find places, and just plan the route from years of experience driving around the country.
At work I deliver parcels and use a copy of the AtoZ on my phone which is great but if my phone battery goes I'll be stuffed.

Hmmm, I occasionally have to go there. Always a bit scary as you approach from Trafford Park end past all the burnt out pubs.....
