My elderly Dads printer in Uk has failed. It is an hp 3638

I am looking for a mail order simple wired printer to replace it. Must support Win Vista.

Any suggestions gratefully received.

Dump Vista. It went out of support during the Victorian era.

Hence no new printer will offer official support for it, and drivers could be hit and miss.  Business class lasers stand a better chance of working, but guess you're actually more after your average £50 inkjet.

Dump vista? Sound suggestion. Very difficult in practice. If and it is a big if given how Corona virus looks to be with us like ...forever , I can’t see me getting there to transfer over his software. Not a chance of him doing it at his age.

Anyway, bought a Canon 5150. It should arrive next week.

What was interesting was how few printers were available. Presumably demand is outstripping manufacture or supply

Printers in the home are less popular than they once were, and those that are there are used much less.

For cheap inkjets, which are sold at a loss, the economics only work if the manufacturer can sell a fair amount of expensive ink.

So as usage drops off, the economics don't work so well.


Vista support ended 4 years ago. I hope its not internet connected


When you or another family member can get it replaced, using OS native cloud storage, such as OneDrive for Windows PCs or iCloud for macOS, can make such future PC replacements or rebuilds trivial enough to do remotely.  The free tiers tend to (purposely) be a bit too small.  For those of us that end up looking after everybody else PCs, primary cloud storage is a real life saver, and for those who don't yet use it, its worth considering setting up on remote PCs.
