Calling ornithologists
« on: 11 January 2021, 08:46:16 »

Being a country boy, I should be better at ornithology, but my misspent youth was looking at other forms of bird.

Can anyone identify the bird in the clip *Warning 275Mb*

https://theboy.omegaowners.com/oofpics/oof_odds_and_sods/bird.mov

I was thinking either a red kite or a kestrel, but could be wide of the mark  :-[

Im no expert by any means, but we have Red kites around here and it looks pretty similar.
We also have Buzzards nesting nearby, and in the grounds at work. I think they are quite a bit bigger.

The video not working properly on my ipad, but it looks big enough to be a buzzard. Lots of both here in the Kennet valley.

Buzzards are very lazy, they don't like to fly unless they have too, that's why you see them sat on fencing, etc near main roads, looking for easy meals.  Were as a Kite will dive and savage a pigeon.

Thanks guys, seems they are more common than I remember - I lived near and remember where they re-introduced them into the Chilterns about 30 years ago, so in my simple mind they must be rare.  But looking at the links above, seems they have become common again :y. Even in deepest Brackleyshire ;D

Beautiful creatures, so its nice to see their numbers increasing.  8)
Need to be careful of them when little Dora is outside though. They would pick her up and take her home for their supper.  :'(

Paint an effing big eye on her shell, that will confuse them.
