I would expect a stiffer spring to hold up the heavier diesel engine

You can assume what you like, but fitting it to a petrol V6 would be dangerously stupid as it would completely unbalance the front end.

Basically, for any given application, front springs are, in ascending weights, as follows : all 2.0/2.2 16v petrol springs are the same; all V6 and 2.2 diesels are the same; all 2.5 diesels are the same.

Rear springs are, again for any given application as follows, saloon all the same; estate all the same.

Springs will vary in number of coils/ride height/ suspension type, but will nevertheless carry the same weight for any given application.

Spring weight should be half the axle load, from the chassis plate, and the same side to side. From memory, four cylinder petrols are 990kg front, v6 and 2.2 are 1080kg front and 2.5 diesels are 1130kg.

Actually, according to the EPC, the same front springs are fitted to a 2.5TD as to the 2.5 petrol model.
It also lists the same spring for 2.5 /3.0 petrol models (although different part nos from the above :o).
So make from that what you will .... ::)
The front springs for the different models is an absolute minefield, but personally, I think you would be ok for the short term in fitting (if you can find a matched pair of them) a set of struts from a 2.5 TD to a 2.5 2.6 or 3.0 petrol until you can rebuild your existing ones.
But then there is no guarantee that a previous owner hasnt mixed and matched in the past, although the likelihood of having replaced front springs is a lot less than the rear springs.

Hi . Was actually goin to pm you yourself in case you hadn't seen this wanted ad. I beleive you sometimes break omegas or have I read wrong somewhere.
The strut is needed because my brothers had 1 faulty unit( the spring seat was rubbing on the tyre )so I put one of mine on his to get him going short term. Now I just need one to put back on mine or back on his ,either way.
Yes I saw the unit being mentioned as suitable as for a diesel 2.5 or petrol 2.5 too but was then told otherwise so have found out now that a 2.2 dying one is the same also.

Spring seat rubbing on the tyre isn't a strut problem. That's either wrong size tyres, wrong wheel offset, incorrect geometry settings, or all the above ;)

A bent strut might do it, but there would be (lots of) other damage. Loose strut to hub-carrier bolts are by far the most likely cause

Just to throw a further spanner into the proverbial works, according to EPC, the 2.2 D front springs are a different part no from the 2.5 TD and 2.5 Petrol, but the same part no as the 2.5 and 3.0 Petrol. Work that one out.....!!
Must be chassis no changes, but I can only see the difference being negliable, but still should be a matched pair.
I bet you wish you had kept your own strut now...... ;D

il find one and if necc just put a pair of new ones on.mines on sorn for now anyway so no big panic.
definately the strut seat faulty.it has become weak with rust and gone level to the strut rather than the upward tilt it should have.other one and mine all fine with approx 1" of clearance ..
standard wheel and tyre, camber 1.1 deg.
would have put 2 new on his but needs car everyday to get to work hence the panic swap job !
theres a 2.2 diesel strut and a 2.5 diesel strut on ebay so unless anyone has one on here il prob go for that for now.
