General Car Chat / E-Royal Mail Vans
« on: 10 February 2026, 22:19:02 »
More EV chat!  :)

I pulled into a big Sainsbury's in Exeter this afternoon and there were three electric Royal Mail vans parked in the charging spots and the Posties were standing around having a chat while their vans charged up.

I doubt that this time counts as break time and I wondered how long every day these Posties have to hang around charging their vans. I saw three this afternoon, but there must be hundreds around the country twiddling their thumbs at the charging point at any given time.  :-\

No wonder the postal service has gone to shite!   ::)   ???   :D

Honda are selling an electric motorbike the WN7 and they say it's 50kw max power power plant "produces power on par with a 600cc internal combustion engine, while generating 100Nm of torque - comparable to a 1000cc motorcycle." Sounds good.  :y

It has less than a 100 mile range though...  :-\  Although it's claimed it will charge from 20% to 80% in 30 minutes, which I suppose is OK if your favourite ride out lunch time pub has a charger.  :)

At £12,999 it seems like an expensive toy, so maybe it's one for Lord Opti now he's an evangelical convert to EV's?   :P  ;)

They're all talking about Wes Streeting becoming our next Prime Minister. He of course denies any ambition to replace Starmer.  ::)

An interesting snippet I saw earlier though, that putting Streeting up as a contender for the crown is actually a feint and that Shabana Mahmood is who they really want to replace Starmer.  :-\

Well she certainly ticks all the boxes apart from one, and maybe because of her religion she ticks that final box secretly?   ???   >:D

The Epping sex offender has been released from HMP Chelmsford by mistake.....   >:(

I guess they'll catch him soon. I've seen a video on X of him chatting to a couple of fellas on Chelmsford High Street wearing his grey prison trakkies and carrying all his stuff in a clear plastic bag.  ::)

So we've touched on this in other threads, but I decided it deserved a thread all to itself!  :)

Apparently/allegedly the company that has been selected to run Labour's digital ID app is called Multiverse, whose CEO is a fella called Euan Blair, whose Dad happens to be the war criminal former PM Tony Blair, whose think tank the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change has been advising governments all round the world on Digital ID systems.  :-X

Follow the money as they say....  ::)

General Discussion Area / It Must Be A Coincidence
« on: 17 July 2025, 18:59:52 »
I had to get the train again today as I had to have an eye exam where they put drops in and I couldn't drive.  ::)

Short hop between Axminster and Honiton on the recently nationalised South Western Trains London Waterloo to Exeter St Davids line.  :)  Going there the train was delayed by 11 minutes due to a signalling fault. Luckily for me I got off at Honiton where it sat for 25 minutes waiting for the 'up' train to Waterloo. Going back it was 6 minutes late for an unspecified reason, but probably related to the earlier signalling fault.  :-\

That's the second time in less than a month I've got the train and they've been late.  ::)  It must be a coincidence, but I'm sure that this sort of thing rarely happened before nationalisation.  :-X  :-\

Back to the 1970's?  ???   ;D

General Discussion Area / Conspiracy Theory....
« on: 17 July 2025, 11:31:20 »
Or is it?  ???

There's a conspiracy theory doing the rounds that Labour will drive the economy over the cliff and will end up going to the IMF for a bailout loan. One of the terms of the bailout will be that the UK joins the EU, or at least joins the EU's Single Market and Customs Union which would mean that we are effectively a colony of the EU.  ::)

Sounds fantastical, but this Labour government are so bad you have to wonder if they are doing things on purpose....  :-\

I love a good conspiracy theory me.  :D

General Discussion Area / Ancient Central Heating System
« on: 18 June 2025, 23:45:24 »
My mates Mum (96) has an ancient central heating system with a monster of a gas boiler that squats on the floor in the kitchen and flat panel radiators with huge bakelite knobs on the valves.  ::)

Anyway it's not doing too good right now. Firstly, the radiators sound as if they are half empty and you can hear the water rushing through them, and secondly when the hot water comes on the radiators get hot as well. Not ideal at this time of year. Although I haven't looked at it, I've assumed that the first issue with the rads is something to do with the header tank and the system isn't getting topped up and the second issue is a knackered 2 way valve.  ???

Their regular plumber told them it was time for a new system last time he went and is now not responding to my mates calls or texts. Frankly and sadly, his Mum isn't going to around much longer, so he'd rather keep this system going for the duration, rather than put his Mum through the disruption of have a new system installed.

I don't really want to get too involved, but I might have a look if he struggles to find a new plumber.  So what do the central heating experts think of my diagnoses?  ???

General Car Chat / I've Got A Stiffie!!
« on: 18 May 2025, 00:13:19 »
Well that got your attention!  ;D

Yes it's my gear lever on the Mondeo. It got a bit stiff and 'notchy' when changing gear.  :-\

I pulled the gaiter off and greased what I could see of the linkages, but that hasn't made any difference.

It's a 2008 Mk4 with 178,000 miles and it had 113,000 when I bought it. So it almost certainly has the original gearbox oil, although I'm pretty sure it's a sealed for life unit, so I'm not even sure if it's possible to change the oil.  :-\

Box of matches?  ::)

General Car Chat / Adhesive
« on: 30 April 2025, 22:38:33 »
Looking at my new to me Mondeo grill earlier, I realised that the monkey that removed it from the donor car simply cut through the plastic tabs that secure the grill along the bottom.  :(  ::)

I'll try to secure it with some self tappers, but if that's not possible I thought I'd glue it in place.

Any recommendations for a suitable adhesive that will withstand heat, cold, wet and vibrations?  ???

Sticks Like Shit sounds good!  ;D
