General Discussion Area / Bin Collections
« on: 05 February 2025, 06:36:03 »

In the news again - Monthly Collections being considered in Bristol and now Dundee. :-X

Mine are :-
week 1 Pink    - Food & Non Recyclable :y
week 2 Black    - Tins & Glass :y
week 3 Pink    - as above :y
week 4 Green    - Cardboard & Paper  :y

Works well for me.

News doesn't mention which bin it is, so assuming it's the Food/Non Recyclable.

Going monthly in summer may create vermin issues.  But there are 2 options not mentioned.  :-X

1st is to apply for a 2nd bin.
2nd is to supply larger capacity bins.

Either way the bin lorries will have to be modified or replaced as they will be required to cope with double the amount of waste if the rounds are halved. Unless the rounds are split into 2 groups/teams to serve the regions areas.

Helped a friend out earlier with a small cash transfer to them  to help solve a problem.

Money will return to me soon no issues there. 8)

But with one thing a another we used PayPal.  Fee was £2.99

I sent £100 they revived $118+

When I checked the exchange rate £100 = $124.96 so PayPal skimmed a % as well as a charge.

So with this in mind and knowing the wealth of knowledge on here I ask for advice.

Banks versus Apps etc

Banks wont do anything for nothing.
Comparison sites say no fees

I have never heard of any of these and therefore wont trust what I dont know

I may never transfer cash abroad ever again and this is my 1st one ever.

Any advice is much appreciated.T.I.A.

Amazon :-X

Got my account suspended for buying the same item twice but separately.  I see the problem looked like a fraud and respect the security that kicked in. I don't like the fact that no text or email to me to let me know.

Bought 2 gift cards Friday, 1st via email, order placed, verification done, code received with 3 hours.

2nd order said 5 min del, proceeded and waited and waited.  Gave in and the bullshit started once I contacted customer services.

Blame game started.  Rang the bank Monday Morning they said they passed the payment Amazon didn't pick it up.

Customer services said their security team will contact (email only) to ask for I.D. verification.

Evey thing is wait 24 hours with them

Took till today, and a decent service advisor to sort.

But all sorted now. :y

It's all crazy.  I have had calls from india using my local STD code, tech is so clever they can probably change any call to show a number of their choice.

It's same with the deep fakes with the likes of Martin Lewis being used, it's all getting so convincing.

General Car Chat / Re: Car Tax Scaremongering
« on: 17 January 2025, 09:01:40 »
I believe a few years ago they talked of putting extra taxes on fuel and scrapping car tax.

So Pensioners for example who did a 3 mile round trip for a weekly shop would benefit, The reps who drive a 1000+ miles a week then pay more. All based I suppose a way of paying  only for the wear and and tear of the damage to the roads.

Downside is the haulage companies pay more then charge more and the costs are passed on for groceries, goods and other trades.

Pro's and con's each way, no matter what it would p/ss some people off

I know a lot of members have family and friends abroad etc. :y

I used to use Skype a lot with out issues, used several programs since. :y

To night I have been chatting with a friend in the US and it keeps crapping out.  Tried FB messenger, tried Google chat (New one on me)  they both set off crystal clear then after a while sounds like submarine sonar kicks in and kills the call.

Any recomendations T.I.A.  :y

I was starting to like the guy, watched a lot on Youtube about him.

There is talk of a Tesla Mobile Phone, Planes, Boats even helicopters.  ::)

Technology wise he is a genius and has made a difference in a lot of areas.  :y

BUT, politics is an area he should keep out of (unless it's his own country.)  We all have opinions but don't forecast them bluntly over social media.  :-X
