General Discussion Area / Windows 7
« on: 24 June 2009, 22:27:03 »
I have just installed W7 after dragging my heels until I finally blew my lid with vista and bit the bullet.

First impressions are very good, nice interface easy to use (even the wife may find it more intuitive!) only time will tell on the reliability  :y

General Discussion Area / USB Drives - permanent deletion
« on: 23 June 2009, 14:18:05 »
Recently on a course I was told that currently it was not possible to perform a permanent deletion of files held on  a USB/Flash drive which had something to do with the technology.  There are some products which claim to be able to but I am unsure as to the truth.   :-/ :-/

Maybe one of our resident techie experts can help  :y

I am in the process of beefing up our local IT security and part of it includes the installation of a 'sheepdip'

I have looked online for advice and many are saying that at least 2 AV products should be installed.....? Will the presence of 2 AV suites cause conflicts?

Also any other advice on the subject would be appreciated.  I am rather new to this  :D

General Discussion Area / Good job the Micks
« on: 13 June 2009, 20:46:26 »
Just got back from watching Trooping the colour by St James' and I must say the Micks (Irish Guards) were spot on.  Very good snappy movements, very sharp and their timing was excellent.  I had the hairs on the back of my neck standing up all the way through, well done lads  :y

General Discussion Area / Smashed Windowscreen
« on: 14 May 2009, 12:35:25 »
Hi guys,

Made it safely back to blighty  but managed to have a muppet moment and smashed the windscreen.  Its defo not repairable but still fairly legal right now. I have to put the car through the MOT soon and will need to get the windscreen replaced.

I know there have been a few nightmares with windscreen replacements but I cant remember who was good and who was downright shoddy...

Experiences people......?   ::) ::)

Did the drive from hell on friday which thankfully was a German Bank Holiday hence not a lot of vehicles (trucks are banned on BH and sundays 8))  Stayed overnight in Dover and got to aldershot this afternoon.  The quarter is really nice and the miggy behaved very well.

Have fun in York and I hope to catch up with some of you soon! :y

General Discussion Area / I'm coming home to blighty
« on: 28 April 2009, 19:47:36 »
Well guys the movers have been and taken all but the fridge and a matress which will be collected tomorrow with my garage full of tools  ;D

Tomorrow and thursday I close out the last few things with work and then drive though Germany, Holland, brussels and france to dunkirque where we jump on the ferry and kip the night in Dover somewhere.  Saturday we drive upto Aldershot and move into our new quarter.

I'm driving the miggy with the boat strapped to the roof and the wife is driving the Jag.  Needless to say a full complement of fluids, tools and typical spares are accompanying me as the car was layed up for several months until last week.

So if you see a silver miggy with a blue dinghy on the roof, honk away!!   ;D ;D ;D ;D

General Discussion Area / Could you do this?
« on: 27 April 2009, 11:57:21 »
I rarely pedal things like this online but this guy deserves all the support he can get.  I served with this guy in Iraq working in the same HQ, I left to come home days before his accident.

You may have seen this in the news, after becoming a paraplegic in an enemy rocket attack he was told he would never walk again.  He spends every other month in Hedley Court the military rehabilitation centre working on his fitness and traction.   Amazingly he has already started to regain some feeling and movement in his legs!

He has already completed several fund-raising activities including rowing across the channel in 16 hours!  He aims to raise £1m for Help For Heros and is above one third of the way there.

I am going to lend him some support this weekend as I am inspired by this chap.  I know we are all in a pinch but even if you can only spare a couple of quid it all makes a difference.

Have a read of some the messages of support on here:

General Discussion Area / Miggy back on the road!!!
« on: 26 April 2009, 10:06:32 »
Well its been emotional but 'Guppy' is finally back on the road.  Put her back together and got a new battery, put in 10L of V-Power and she sparked into life after just 15 secs of cranking, not bad considering she's been off the road for 7 months!

Guppy will become SWMBO's car so I can enjoy the jag but I have already told her we will be swapping cars from time to time.  ;D ;D ;D

Jobs on the horizon then for when I get back to the Uk next week:

-3lt cams and head refurb and change the exhaust manifolds for some better ones
-strip down sump and clean strainer, 'Oil Lack' Sensor
-replace shocks and springs
-rust treatment and respray

and if I see some nice 17/18 alloys going cheap I may just treat myself

My half Japanese wife and I were p!ssing ourselves laughing at the Asian racial slurs, she has already been warned that I will be using 'Dragon Woman' on her one day!  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

.....to change your address with Sky.

2 operators
3 minutes spent trying to sell me stuff I didn't want
4 times put on hold
5 minutes spent arguing that I can and will install the dish myself at the new place
14 minutes on hold
22 minutes 44 seconds total

Plus being patronised when being asked about the 'password' I setup over a year ago.  >:( >:(

I was going to get Sky Broadband and Sky talk all in but now I doubt I will..... I feel a letter coming on....  :-X :-X

General Discussion Area / Shop - Cam Cover gaskets
« on: 09 April 2009, 19:07:58 »
Anyone have any idea when the shop is going to get some more of those genuine gaskets?

I figured that as I have most of the superferlous engine bits out of the way I may as well do the gasket change and clean the breathers etc....

Otherwise does anyone have a TC and feel like they trust me... :D

It would cost nearly 90 euros to get them from here....  :o
