Driving up North luv - avoiding the M1
« on: 26 June 2007, 14:40:20 »

Hiya peeps,

I have to go to Catterick from Wiltshire on Thursday and I am not expecting an easy drive.  I usually take A303, A34, A43, M1.

Obviously that is going to cause me probs.  Short of going up A419/A417, M5, M6, M62, M1 and leaving wednesday am I think I am pretty buggered.

Any ideas?  Muchos apprecios amigos!

The first route you mention is about as close to 'as the crow flies' as you'll get! It's almost a comletely straight road.

I can't stand the M1! Unfortunately I have little choice but to drive on it quite often as my head office is in Nottingham.

I think you should just bite the bullet. Or get a flight to Newcastle!!

M1 Closed around Sheffield in both directions because of a dam that might burst it banks nearby.  Likely to tstay closed for the next few days.... >:(

Agreed A1 will avoid most of the trouble spots, I drove up to chesterfield last thursday and the didn't get stuck at the road works, the route I would take from salisbury is; A303, A34, M40 towards B'ham, M42, A42,M1, M18 then A1 :y

 :o

M42!?  I have hit that before (as well as many a squaddie) and found it quicker to get out and walk....!

The M18 route looks interesting, I shall look into it but I am trying to avoid the extra congestion caused by the M1 closure..... as it stands I am leaving at 5am...
...and the army wont pay for my own petrol so I am using a transit van - someone else got the car (vx astra diesel - complete poo!!)

M1 - M18 - A1......which avoids Sheffield but still hits the road works around Chesterfield

A1 has had problems today as the section between Five Lanes End (A57 Worksop) and Markham Moor has been closed north and southbound all day due to flooding!!  Added to the problem with people trying to avoid this section is to use A614 and pick A616 to Newark at Ollerton roundabout but this has also been closed today due to flooding!!  A section of the A57 (links M1 J31 to A1 Five Lanes End) at Shireoaks near Worksop has also been closed, again due to the floods!!

Most I think are clear now but the M1 around Sheffield and Rotherham will be closed tomorrow so if you use the A1 it will be VERY BUSY so allow plenty of time.  Best to check before you set off.

Have a good, safe journey! ;)
