i am putting a ccrt  2008 in my omega elite 2001 estate which has a ccr2006 at present, can i buy a gsm window aerial rather than replace the whole thing.

Yes - you can use an aftermarket and seperate GSM aerial

I am doing a similar thing at the moment,by running a lead from the cars GPS aerial lead at the back o/s door area to a magnetic mounted GPS aerial and fitting it to the metal section under rear parcel shelf,as I have replaced my original VX roof aerial with a DAB style.

Slightly concerned that whilst "field of vision" upwards will be good through large rear window ,the thin wires of the heated rear screen will have an effect ?

The wire wont cause an issue (as the wavelengths of the signals you are looking to receive are pretty short).

Your issue is that looking up is no good to you (unless looking for satellites).

That is the what I will be looking for Mark  as I am replacing the existing VX roof GPS aerial with a magmount to underside of parcel shelf onto the metal body ,as advised by several other members.

My experience of internal GPS antennas shows that they are not nearly as good as the external ones.

Given that the system is looking to get as many unique clock signals from as many satellites as possible, you need a 'wide sky' view. Use under a rear shelf would mean only getting a signal from the visable sky out the rear window, thus reducing the sky area by 60% plus.

Although it will work, the accuracy will be compromised and it may take longer to obtain a fix.

What does work much better is a gps antenna under the plastic of the front bumper.

knowing nowt about aerials ... would these work for DAB ??  Just acquired a 2nd hand Pure Highway that will need a replacement aerial .....

Reality is that DAB is only slightly higher up the band than normal FM (179-230Mhz) and hence you will see on the market some filter units which split out DAB signal from a standard FM antenna (note the output will be much reduced when compared to that of a correctly tuned antenna and is unlikely to work with an active antenna).

Hirschmann do some nice roof mount units whcih support DAB/FM/GPS and some also GSM (but unlikely you need this). They were standard fit on some german designed cars to (hence second hand can be got!, think VW, GM etc)

Hirschmann antenna's are some of the best on the market and come highly recommended. If you intend to replace the roof antenna on a saloon you must use one with a reasonably small footprint for the base (if you are installing one with a GPS base) because a larger footprint won't follow the curvature of the saloon roof.

If you intend to mount a hole mount antenna nearer to the centre of the roof make sure it doesn't foul the sunroof.
