worse car ever
« on: 17 January 2010, 22:02:18 »

i had a white 5dr Nissan terrano diesel once, didn't have it long, it had as much style as a trainspotter, one of the crappest cars i've ever owned, i'm sure someone can beat that.

A blue Montego estate, bought it at an auction had everything wrong with it found out it was an ex taxi, so I sorted the paintwork with a spray can so it looked half decent, then flogged it for 200 quid more than I bought it for, the gearbox would've lasted probably another week but the bloke who bought it had a clue about nothing  :-X

I had it two days I might add.

Skoda Estelle :D

That was many, many years ago.

All I could afford :(

Best thing going for it, it had alloy wheels, and great in the snow RWD ;D

Talbot Alpine - orange, with matching interior  :(

On an old W plate if I remember correctly, I had it in 1987, on its last legs!

Dreadful car - awful cam noise, poor starter, went through batteries like no tomorrow  :(

About as reliable as a politician  :-?

Leyland Metro (B reg) 1000 cc and dodgy suspension. Nearly killed me that one and had a stalling fault that just couldn't be cured.

Fiat 850 Sports...  paid £250 for it in 1972, went pretty well but 3 weeks after I got it I had cause to do a very serious emergency stop ... that all worked pretty well and I missed the prat ... but the brakes felt a bit odd after ..... discovered 2 things .... I had bent the brake pedal and put a hole in the floorpan... some exceedingly serious tinworm going on.  :(

As I was skint and could not afford to take a hit on it .. new brake pedal from a scrappy and a weekend doing a papier mache ? job with layers of wet cardboard, let it all dry, then lots of underseal. Took it to a garage 50 miles away and traded it against an Austin 1300 ... got £300 for it ...  well chuffed ..  :)

Mine was a Brand New Astra GTE MK1  B Plate, delivered to my door 2 days before Aug 1st.

Condesation formed in headlights
N/S front wing started to rust.
Fuel tank imploded.
Paint issues on 2 wheels
     sunroof
crap in paint in various places

Wiring loom melted
Poor brakes

Loads more issues just cant remember them.

Apparenly the cars had been stood part finished during a german steel strike.

Put me off Vx for a few years.....and FWD.

List was £7500, I paid £6520.20 after company discount, chopped it in for a Brand new Sylvia Turbo after 8000 miles.   (Lost £20.20 on it in 8 months.   :y :y )

Without doubt, the crappiest car I've ever owned is a MkII Astra Belmont 1.8GLSi. Went like the clappers (on the original engine, replacement engine was poor). Hated it even before I bought it, no idea why I did buy it.  Had it 3 months, replaced it with a MkII GTE, which handled every bit as bad, but was nicer to drive.

Worse vehicle I've ever been responsible for (ie, inc company and lease cars), 1.8D Escort van, closely followed by a 1.6LX Focus.

You all should have tried to drive a Yugo.
Probably all cars you have complained would seem like a Ferrari.
Lets just say compared to it Skodas and Ladas were magnificent cars

Lets just say there were people who pressed harder against the upper part of the seat, it would break and they would fall on their back while driving if they didn't hold the wheel firmly (it happened to a friend of mine). You should have seen the colour of his skin after he exited the car. Luckily he didn't hit anything

1976 Vauxhall Viva

1985 Vauxhall Cav 2 Saloon
1985 Vauxhall Cav 2 Hatch
1997 Vauxhall Omega 2.5V6 CDX

That Volvo...was utterly awful.  How can a 2.85 V6 be so bland?  And the cornering...

Umm, well, yes it did actually :D

My dad repaired the passenger floor pan out of coke cans which, he said, were thicker than the original steel!

I passed my test in that car, in 1996, and while I was learning I got shunted up the arse by a Sierra Ghia.  Wrote the front of his car off, all it did on the Viva was pop a fender bolt :D

Has to be a Ford Orion diesel & a MKII Ford Escort. Do you see a pattern forming.
The Orion was uncomfortable & wouldn't pull you outa bed. The Escort was just crap in every way ;D

I'm sorry, i have to defend the mk2 escort, they were the saxo of our day, you could do a lot to them to make them sound/look cool, but best of all, RS2000 and RS Mexico, bullet proof rwd rally cars, great entertainment. brilliant.

I agree with you about the MK II escort i grew up with them I had a 1.3 pop to start with a couple of 1.6 sports i mexico and eventually bought a genuine T reg RS 2000 it was my pride and joy till i stuck it on its lid  :D At the time i was working for my uncle as a mechanic so i built a flat front MK II with a 2.1 pinto twin choke webers etc it was the boy racer car of its day
The worst car i had was VIVA bought it for £50 just after passing my test i worked hard to save up to buy a car with metal bodywork and not rust  :y

Ho another I didn't mention earlier was the Renault 21.
It needed a new steering rack shortly after I bought it 3 years old, at a cost of £600. Glad that was paid on a warranty I bought with the car.
After that it just kept falling apart
Door handles falling off
Handbrake lever snapped
Clutch pedal snapped
Drivers seat frame collapsed.
Loads of interior trim parts falling off.
Rear wheel bearing got that hot smoke was pouring from the wheel.
Engine and gearbox was unbreakable, and went on and on. It was just everything around them kept falling apart. :y ;D

1st Car I ever owned was an Austin Allegro, without the 'QUARTIC ' steering wheel. Cost me £250
Had that about two months and put in part ex for a .......
.......BRAND SPANKING SHINY NEW .....
Lada Samara,(Got £650 part ex) and kept the Samara for five years and sold it to those people who came round at the time buying up old Lada's, sold it to them for £740, with a siezed gearbox.
I was well chuffed, was on my drive for ages.

Citroen Xantia ........................
Brand new in '93. When it was delivered I found my head actually touched the headlining eventually found out that the car I test drove had no sunroof which dropped the headlining another 2 to 3 inches making it the most uncomfortable car I have ever had to drive. Suspension failed four or five  times resulting in it driving like a rubber bouncy ball, it caught fire once behind the dash and when an elderly gentleman ran up to me with a fire extinguisher I stopped him and told him to " let the ******* burn " ( it didn't unfortunatley ) .
Twice it ran into cars after being parked and handbrake applied ,turned out the hanbrake discs on front wheels cooled and contracted after a while causing the hanbrake to let go.The front pads screemed like a banshee from new to disposal and Citroen couldn't rectify it.
It was a company car and I ended up doing over 90K miles in it and can honestly say I despised every one of them.

Reliability wise it has to be a 1989 F reg Peugot 205 1.9 Gti which I owned for 6 months in 1999. Got fed up of spending money on it on an almost weekly basis, the bodywork was nice though ;)

1982 Talbot Solara. Only 5 years old shiney silver with blue interioir & green glass, £200 looked great. Within a week i could only select 2nd & 4th gears. Swapped for an old blue Avenger estate with a red bonnet, tough as old boots despite the abuse & lack of oil & water checks!!! :y

since we're all scraping the barrell, done a little scraping myself
1974 vauxhall VX 490 bought for 50 quid, no brakes overheating was a feature
1979 Dolomite 1850HL, i must have changed the engine at least 4 times
1980 fiat 132 rubber mount on propshaft gone, BANG BANG BANG BANG it got louder and faster for obvious reasons
1975 Cortina MK3, had no rubber gaiter round gear stick, suffered from bad backpressure so fumes from engine always ended up in car, you had to drive everywhere with windows open, that was actually a great old car.

My own cars:
1987 1.2 Nova saloon
1983 1.1 Fiesta
1981 1.1 Fiesta
1988 Astramax with full GTE running gear
1996 Rover 800 turbo
1998 Mini cooper
2000 clit sport
2002 MG ZS
1976 Fiesta Ghia
2001 Omega v6

Company cars:
1993 1.8d Escort van
1995 1.8d Escort estate
2002 Dewoo Tacuma
2004 Citroen C5 2.0
2004 Citroen Picasso 1.6d
2008 Hyundai i30

Worst has to be the picasso, uncomfy, unreliable, poorly built.
Second has to be the escort estate, not a bad car but brutally underpowered, 55hp, 5 up fully laden boot it wouldnt do more than 60.
Third was the astramax, i know why Vx didnt put a GTE engine in them, it was lethal  ;D
Alll the rest i was quite happy with and never had any major issues with  :y

Fiat 127, 40 quid. Absolutely crap in every possible way. Sold it (after much welding) for £100  :y
Fiat 127's rotted like billy ho but you must admit they were fun to drive. Revvy little engines that sipped fuel no matter how hard you hammered them & the handling was mini like....grin factor inducing, road legal go kart but sadly built for italian climates. :(

Not like me to big up a FWD but i'm glad to be old enough to remember what fun they were. Guy. :y

Daewoo Nubira 2.0 CDX Estate, 98/S.

Company car which I must admit I really wanted before I got it. I'd had a non turbo Astra D estate before which im sure only had a steering wheel as an optional extra, so when I was offered a 6 month old car with a 2.0 litre engine, elec windows all round and air con it was a no brainer.

That piece of sh1te honestly was in the garage every 2 weeks for something or another. Mainly front suspension problems, but also 2x new short engines, 4x altenators, new gearbox and rust on the leading edge of the bonnet. Hateful car, and dealer service which made Vauxhall dealers look helpful!!!! (Its not often you get 'offered out' by a service manager, I did)

You forgot about the daf 33 with variomatic gearbox, with it's aluminium head that warped with heat and you had to let it cool down again before setting off on the rest of your journey that was a slow car as was the fiat 126

Has anyone noticed that Talbot/Chrysler offerings seem to be quite common on this thread. ::) ::)

since we're all scraping the barrell, done a little scraping myself
1974 vauxhall VX 490 bought for 50 quid, no brakes overheating was a feature
1979 Dolomite 1850HL, i must have changed the engine at least 4 times
1980 fiat 132 rubber mount on propshaft gone, BANG BANG BANG BANG it got louder and faster for obvious reasons
1975 Cortina MK3, had no rubber gaiter round gear stick, suffered from bad backpressure so fumes from engine always ended up in car, you had to drive everywhere with windows open, that was actually a great old car.

Im running one of these everyday as its better than my Omega :'(

I tend to keep my cars, usually for over ten years, just coming up to 11 on the Omega. The least inspiring to drive has been a Volvo 340 bought for SWTSMBO at auction many years ago. It was like rowing a boat, you were up and down the gears all the time to encourage it to move, fairly solid though. Probably the worst was a 1965 Mk1 Cortina Estate. A complete rust bucket, and never started when you wanted it to. I spent the whole time I owned it filling rust holes with filler, and guess what? It was the only car I have ever sold for a profit!!!
There's one born every day. ;D ;D ;D

I thought they looked rather nice, even though they were just standard Talbot with a bit of extra body trim (and no 4 wheel drive...)

Most crappy cars were both rented - a Chrysler Neon 2.0 Automatic which I gave back to the car rental company after 4 hours refusing to drive it, and a Kia Shuma 1.8 Automatic which was just horrible to drive.

Both were rental cars, so new, just to show you that they were crap from day one and not some neglected old bangers that aged badly.
