Windscreen trim
« on: 21 September 2023, 16:35:19 »

When i purchased my Omega in early 2018 ,it was pretty obvious the windscreen had been BADLY replaced by the old (77 years) owner (or his blind, one armed, retarded glass man)  :-X

last week the Omega got jealous of the attention I was giving to a couple of the Astras  :P and decided it wanted a new screen  :(

I've never really looked at the trim in any detail ,until now (other than discuss it with Al ,DG at Brackley meet a while back ,and agree it was a lash up, terrible job)

Having now looked at it in detail , I suspect the cowboy who fitted it  :-X "forgot" the side trim inner sections ,until AFTER he/she/them/it had bonded the screen to the car  :-\ then somehow retro-fitted jammed them in  :o and fitted the outer trims.

if you look at the trim, there's a 6mm ish gap between glass and the upper "goal post" trim

N/S trim side meets lower

I assume that gap is meant to have the screen in it  :-\

N/S outer trim gap  :-\

O/S trim gap close up

Am I correct in my assumption that the inner trim GM 90493424 , GM 90493425 , GM 90493426 and lower GM 90460336 should have been put round the glass BEFORE fitting , and the gap in my photos isn't meant to be there (the outer trim upper GM 90460335 is meant to be flush with the glass and A pillars  :-\

I intend to carefully remove the outer trims and see what condition the inner seats (4 sections) are in before deciding what to do or order .

having never done or had done an Omega screen , only carlton ones, I assume the trims can be re-used IF not badly mashed by the previous cowboy fitter ,or the cowboy who's going to remove them  :D

I have searched the forum ,and gleamed some information  :)
but this cluster**** bodge job hasn't been covered (that i can find )
perhaps no OOFer has ever had one fitted this BADLY before  ;D
though it did last at least until it didn't ,five plus years  >:D

All my 3 Elites have got their original screens fitted Dave, and all of them have a noticeable gap on the windscreen side of the vertical mouldings. You can see the metal retainer clips at the lower most edge adjacent to the screen. The gap disappears as the moulding passes through the 90 degree bend at the top of the screen, and at this point the moulding sits flush with the screen across the top of the screen.
Looking at the damage to the moulding on the offside, that certainly looks terribly misshapen and only a new moulding will rectify that.
The problem is that genuine mouldings are now hard to source, as are the retainers. They were part of a new GM screen (and I also assume aftermarket screens) but I have bought them individually too.
It does look however like some cannibal has been at the offside moulding on your car...
A good indication of how well a replacement screen has been fitted is how tight the upper 90 degree bend of the moulding sits against the start of the roof panel.
I have some photos of my screens as fitted from new , but I've been ununable to fathom out how to get photos on this site....perhaps pm me and I can WhatsApp them???

Thanks for the reply MR Johnnydog  :)

I don't have a whatsapp sorry

sounds like ,from what you are saying, that I'm completely wrong about the 6mm gap  :-[

outer seals are tight top and bottom ,but the top corners have been a mangled mess since i got the Omega .

I can get the outer seals ,though costly ,and the lower inner .
I'm not sure I can justify £200  :o for the outer seals ,plus £115 for a glass + fitting ,
can't seem to source the inner trims ,without a trip to uncle Putin in Russia  :P
I've lived with it like that for five and a half years
It's not noticeable from the driver's seat  :P
It's a daily driver ,far from being a show car.

I could just claim on the insurance, pay the excess of about £100 and have the glass replaced .

I was hoping to get the trims, and get a local fitter to do it ,sub £300

I guess ny next move is to carefully remove the outer trims , such as they are ,
and see what the inner trim retainers look like .

So what's wrong with the insurance?
A windscreen claim needs to be declared as a claim for 5 years when renewing  ;)

I've got fully comp ,with glass cover .that's not the issue .

even with my full (20+ years)  "protected"  ::) no claims bonus ,it has an effect on renewal prices ongoing .

pity you can't get insurance insurance  ,in case you need a claim :-X

I've never declared a windscreen claim, and it's never affected future claims or premiums.

My insurance company don't class a glass repair or replacement as a 'claim' either...only know because I had a windscreen claim (not on an Omega) plus all the recalibration that went with it to the total tune of £1600  :o  And the excess was NIL which a further bonus :y

why would it , if you Didn't declare it  :D

I didn't think it was classed as a "claim" either ,but it was one of the questions at renewal last time (when getting quotes on comparison sites)  :(
