Sneaky little punt
« on: 01 December 2021, 18:51:46 »

Took a ride to the auction house today selling a few more of my Dinky & Corgi collection , they sell everything house clearance etc + the odd car from deceased estates, I spied  a gleaming black VW Up 2015 reg with 2,300 miles 1 owner MOT just expired so put a pre auction bid in, if I get it cheap enough put it through a test could make a few quid..😁

It's up to the auction house to check the finance before they sell it. That's why you pay them 15%+VAT in fees.

It's business Steve, but  bid accordingly & stick to the maximum you are happy with, it's just a bit of fun, done it years ago & now I've got time on my hands gives me something to do.

I've always fancied going to a general auction, Mick. Maybe next time the Mrs has a good couple of weeks off.

That's an abdolutely ridiculous amount - way above even BCA's buyers fees..
Think I'd avoid buying there just on principle.

You could go into partnership with Nick W.

You buy the bargains , he fixes the issues. Then sell on for a profit. Could be a TV series in it. Something like Wheezer Geezer  ;D

Hopefully all it will require is a new ticket , only had 3 MOTs so far sailed through each one as I would expect with 2,300 miles.

Kind of appropriate for the Covid era ;D

It's not as good as Wheeler Dealers that some unqualified self-abuser stole.

There would have to be a strict rule of no French cars. Or Porsches. And BMWs would be extra

The idea was to make a profit. Used French cars don't have enough value to allow for fixing them. German cars have so many fiddly, niggly and expensive faults that take for ever to repair that even the inflated values won't cover the costs. That's why Omegas were so cheap for so long; they had the German engineering characteristics, but not the image to go with them

BCA is still online trade only, think they're making too much money cornering the used car market with WBAC and it's partnership with Cazoo  >:(

I used to go to Bourne car auctions (Lincolnshire) many years ago bought several cars from there but all you paid was the hammer price , the seller only paid an agreed amount, bought a lovely Sierra estate from there once only to have it written off by a young lad driving a tractor did ok from the insurance but would really have liked to have kept the car longer, went back a few weeks later & bought a one owner Montego countryman estate 7 seater kept it for 4 years wasn't a bad car at all considering the BL reputation.

Out of interest put the VW details to WBAC they were prepared to offer £5675 for it, I don't intend to pay more than £4750 for it that's including the comission charges be interesting to see what it actually makes.

The VW UP went for £6,100 so by the time you put comission etc on would be over £7,000, my max bid was £4,000 to ensure a reasonable profit to be made .

At the time, I thought you were kinda dreaming thinking you would get it at a 'snip' and make a decent profit, especially in the current climate of the used car market...

Absolutely crazy , okay it had only covered 2,500 miles needed an MOT but it's 7 years old but on the plus side the items that I entered made £521 so not bad from clearing the loft out 👍

Classic car auctions are like paying for a theatre ticket, it's all entertainment until you get carried away...I was lucky to get away with my little dabble.
