Omega General Help / Tech2 says right front ABS sensor missing
« on: 29 April 2013, 20:55:37 »
1999 2 litre petrol manual saloon - new thread

Took my car to friendly Vx dealer with Tech2 and he says Front Right sensor absent. Great, think I. Problem solved. Not quite.

I unplug faulty sensor and plug in spare sensor, and turn on ignition. ABS light stays on. Puzzling. Compare both sensors with meter - both about 700 ohms.

I then attempt to remove front right sensor. Cannot turn allen screw - seems to be 5mm. Seems to be rusted in. New problem. Should I go in heavy, with torch and angle grinder, certainly destroying sensor, and not sure then if it would get out allen screw? Or could there be a break in the circuit somewhere else, and if so, where? Connector somewhere? ABS socket?

Please advise.

I was just reading an old thread which suggested it was possible to buy kit to control an aftermarket radio unit from the Omega (2000 2.5 semi facelift petrol manual estate) steering wheel control from DND in Paignton, Devon. Is it possible to control the above JVC kit with their gear?

Omega General Help / ABS light still on after ECU change
« on: 25 April 2013, 20:31:30 »
1999 T reg 2 litre petrol manual saloon
Having changed the ABS ECU to cure the ABS light on fault, muddled up my ECUs so changed it again, the fault is still there. I conclude the fault is elsewhere. Sensors? Cogged wheels? Cables? Please advise most likely.

Incidentally, changing the ABS ECU was not the heroic endeavour described in the maintenance guide. I am sure the experts on this forum do it a better way. I did it on a 2 litre this time, but the same technique works on the V6.

Omega General Help / ABS ECU faults and numbers
« on: 24 April 2013, 20:08:09 »
T reg 2 litre petrol manual saloon
This car had ABS light coming on, so today I changed the ABS ECU for one off a similar car I scrapped last year. I had put the new ECU on the pump block when I thought it would be good to get a photograph, so I removed it again. I took a photograph, then realised that I had two identical ECUs sitting on the bench. I did not know which was which. I gambled that the ECU with a little power steering fluid on it was the one I had removed, so I installed the other one.

Went for a test drive, and the ABS light came on. Bother.

I removed the ECU again. The spare ECU had come off a V reg car so presumably was the younger. The labels read as follows: The one I had installed read BOSCH and a bar code; on right 04527
on bottom 965560  0 273 205
The other (left on the bench) read BOSCH and a bar code, 43330 on right
and 871113  0  273  285

I suppose the fault could lie elsewhere, a sensor, cable or a cogged wheel.

Can someone tell me which of these ECUs is the older? Any ideas where the fault might lie? I have known sensors fail, cables fray (on front wheels) and the cogged wheels move about (back only). Would a Tech2 reading help?

Omega General Help / slight play in steering idler
« on: 23 April 2013, 22:55:39 »
1999 manual 2 litre petrol saloon
This car is due for MOT and has 3mm play in the steering idler. Will it fail its MOT? What is the best way to rectify this fault? Pattern part, Vx part, used part?

Omega General Help / camber angle adjustment
« on: 21 April 2013, 14:15:23 »
Over  many years I have found my Senator/Omega front tyres wearing unevenly, mainly on the inside; not necessarily both front tyres the same, and not either always left or right. I conclude the camber angle must vary.

As the suspension is lower wishbone and Mcpherson strut, the camber must vary with suspension movement. So I expect it to wear out both front tyres on both sides.

On my son Jonny's 2 litre petrol manual Omega it wears out o/s front tyres on the inside. Today I found the adjustment between the Mcpherson strut and the knuckle, and after a struggle managed to loosen the nuts and move the knuckle slightly, to lean the wheel outwards at the top. Time will tell if the tyre wear pattern has been changed.

I wonder what the laser alignment shops do. Haynes just says -1degree40' + or -45', maximum deviation left to right wheel 1degree. I'll think about that.

Please advise.

I have a 1998 2 litre estate on which the rear screen wiper works perfectly. On my 2001 2.5 estate I cannot persuade the rear wiper blade to remain in contact with the screen  The spring at the base of the blade seems OK, and the rubber seems free in the holder, but the top of the blade does not remain in contact with the screen as it wipes. What is wrong with it?

I bought an ex Thames Valley police 3.2 manual Omega at Witney auctions March 2006, mileage 130000. The service record showed clutch changes at 33791, 49274, new flywheel at 70402, clutch at 72515 and again at 116350. In March 2010, 157900 miles, I detected slight clutch(?) slip, so gave the car to the wife and used my 2.5 petrol estate Omega myself. Wife never complained of clutch slip. Swopped back this March, mileage on 3.2 is now 171792. After 500 miles I have yet to detect clutch slip. I conclude the clutch is OK and the dual mass flywheel slips occasionally.

Do you agree?

Omega General Help / Waterproofing the scuttle
« on: 31 March 2013, 14:51:05 »
Gentlemen,
I have run Senators and Omegas - wonderful cars -  for many years, but have only just discovered the great wisdom available on this site. I currently run six Omegas (all petrol, all manuals) for my family, doing all my own repairs.

Reading old questions and answers (they make fascinating reading). I  have realised the reason I have suffered misfires caused by water in the rearmost cylinders of several cars  is that it comes in via the scuttle.

What is the best way of waterproofing the scuttle?

Omega General Help / electric window movement on door off car
« on: 17 March 2013, 19:43:51 »
I have four spare Omega doors kept for spares. Unfortunately I removed them with the windows down. Now I wish to raise the windows to recover the central locking door motors. I have tried 12 volts across every pair of pins on the connector to no avail. Is there any way I can raise the windows?
By the way, many thanks for earlier answers, and indeed for the many descriptions of Omega repairs. Today I changed a CL locking motor following OOF procedure.

Hi,
I should like to install a computer in a police special 3.2 manual petrol Omega. I have a spare instrument panel from a crashed 3 litre manual Omega, with a matching yellow socket at the back of the computer. I can buy the appropriate wiper stalk with buttons on e-bay. But is the wiring loom the same on the police special as the 3 litre?

1999 2 litre petrol manual omega. the left hand indicator bulbs are on all the time not flashing. I suspect K46 relay stuck but cannot locate it. Removing fuse 12 extinguishes them, then indicators work normally, but then I have no instruments or radio.

Please help!

Car is 1999 T reg. 2 litre petrol maual saloon

Recently, when I lock or unlock the car with the flipper, the n/s amber lights stay on, not flashing. If I flip on/off long enough I can get them off, but it gets ever more difficult.

I thought it was the CL/alarm relay behind driver's side kick panel, but am not so sure now. The black/white lead, which I thought from the wiring diagram was the culprit, in fact is 12v positive most of the time, only dipping when the lamps flash. I conclude mine is a later wiring diagram car. This means it has a K46 relay which flashes. when the white/black leads goes earthy.

Am I right? Where is the relay? Sounds like somewhere behind the glovebox.
