Omega General Help / Repair or Break??
« on: 23 October 2010, 11:08:13 »
Hi all..

Not sure if this is the right place to post this.. and I hope somone will move it if necessary  ;)

Firstly, an apology to those who think it seems strange that a grown man can't make a decission.. But under different personal circumstances the decission would be easy..

I'd like to have some feedback and comments on a dilema (while I wait to have the parts priced!!)..

Repair or break?     (Deal or no Deal   ;D ;D)

Some of you will have seen a post about a MV6 with a broken cam tensioner bolt.

I'm currently struggling to make a decission about what to do..

The bolt has snapped and it looks like the vehicle will need quite a wedge spending to put it back on the road..

Is it worth it I ask myself??

Positives
Low milleage 86K,
Nice black leather
Minor body blemishes - supermarket dings stone chips
I've had it 5 years and it's not been driven hard in that time.
The previous owner spent whatever Vauxhall robbed off him every time it went in for service..
New exhaust
New discs
New dis pack
New tyres
3 sets of alloys (incl originals)
Has been reliable.
Omega V6!!

Negatives.
11 years old
Cost of the job
Future problems
Resale value !!!

Can I have some feedback please??
Will the car really be the same after having the engine removed and second hand heads (probably from a higher mileage motor) fitted??
If it were your car what would you do??

My main problem is that it is sat on someones drive at the moment and I'm ashamed to say I've stalled on making the decission - and a big thank you to that person for being patient  ;)

Omega General Help / Cambelt/tensioner failure after 600 miles?
« on: 07 April 2010, 12:01:29 »
Hi Guys..

Car visited by AA late at night - "there's no compression - that's going nowhere tonight mate, sounds like the cambelt has gone"

Relay collected the vehicle and dropped her off.. Not looked at it yet..

What are the chances of the belt or tensioner failing 600 miles after fitting a complete new kit and water pump?

Is there anything else that may have caused this and what should I do first to check?   :-/

Omega General Help / Wheel sizes - fitting replacements
« on: 07 March 2010, 01:09:43 »
I've found sites on the net to compare tyre sizes, but nothing to compare wheels sizes..

Issue : 3.0 MV6 1999 - been in storage for a while, needs MOT to go back on the road.

I have 2 sets of wheels but none with legal tread. I could fit new tyres, but I have been looking at eBay and can buy wheels with legal tyres for less than budget tyres..

I was hoping to take the cheap option i.e. cheap wheels from eBay, MOT and then run car for 1 month to make sure there are no serious faults with the car.. Then properly refurbish & re-boot the original wheels..

2 questions and some advice please..

1 : What are the correct wheel specifications (PCD, Offset, bore etc)??

2 : Can you get away with any other sizes?

Any specific advice regarding vehicles that have not been on the road for 2 years (garaged, but not a warm and cosy one) would be greatly appreciated..

Thanks Nick

Omega General Help / Crank oil seal?
« on: 01 April 2008, 14:07:14 »
Hi Guys,

I posted some pictures of an oil leak, (constant fast drip from the sump rim) it was suggested by someone that saw it that it is probably coming from the oil seal where the crank comes out of the front of the engine.

Is there a guide here that deals with replacing this seal?

Is there a definite way to make sure that the leak is coming from here before stripping down?

The cam covers are leaking very badly and the plugs are very full of oil.. could this amount of oil be coming from here? - and if so, could it run down the front of the engine?

{as an aside}
Stealers have suggested that if the crank seal is leaking then the cam belt needs replacing as the oil splattered would degrade the belt - could this be true?? or is this another example of profiteering?  ;D

The cam belt is new - kindly fitted by a member here - and the car hasn't been driven since.

I'm prepared to attempt this myself but guidance would be appreciated (and needed !!).. or maybe miggy or someone local could point me in the direction of a reliable (non stealer) garage in the NP postcode area?

I'll try to post the pictures again or add a link to the previous posts..

Any help would be greatly appreciated     :y

Omega General Help / Cam Lock Kit
« on: 01 February 2008, 11:35:44 »
Hi all..

My MV6 shredded its auxiliary belt before xmas and the cam belt possibly jumped some teeth.. I'd like to check alignment before scrapping but can't get anyone who's prepared to look at it. I've bought the DVD from this site and may able to persuade someone to have a go if I can find a locking kit..

Please could someone let me know who would be willing to lend/rent/give/borrow/beg - (but absolutely not steal!) a cam locking kit for a 1999 3.0 MV6.

I have tried to PM without success - but I'm probably not doing this right!!

Many thanks to you all..

Omega General Help / Please - can anybody help??
« on: 23 November 2007, 10:50:35 »
I recently posted about an Aux Belt that shredded...

Firstly can I thank the many of you that read the post and to those of you who kindly replied..

If you're reading this for the first time let me recap (sorry to those who've heard this before) :

MV6 3.0l auto, traveling at about 30/40, loss of steering etc,etc stopped immediately. Aux belt tensioner failed - shredding Aux Belt!
Towed to nearby garage (good chap - but no knowledge of Omegas).

Engine runs (without Aux Belt) but with mechanical noise from the engine. Cam belt is intact but he suspects it may have jumped teeth. (suspects the worst??)

I'm reluctant to loose this vehicle as it's in good condition and I've started to change bits and pieces like exhausts and discs etc. It's only done 84K, cam belt was changed at 47k and is due shortly, but otherwise ok!

The purpose of this post is to ask the many of you out there who have so much knowledge of these things : "What do I do next??"

Do I just suspect the worst and scrap it?
I have asked and can't find a local specialist for Omegas.
I can't afford Main dealer prices this side of Xmas!!

Is there anyone out there who would be willing to lend a helping hand? Even if it was just to come and have a look and tell me the bad news!! In the last resort I could possibly arrange a trailer and bring it somewhere...

The vehicle is in SE Wales just north of Newport - easy access from M4 or M50..

.. but please.. could one of you help??

NICK

Omega General Help / Auxiliary Belt shredded - Please help???
« on: 21 November 2007, 03:31:34 »
Hi Guys... Help and advice would be really appreciated!!

3.0l MV6 just over 80k. Driving at about 30/40 mph lost power steering and electrics etc. Stopped immediately.

This is not the first time this happened as water pump seized at about 65k. New pump and auxiliary belt etc fitted and all seemed ok with no problem..

A good garage (but without specific knowledge of Omegas) was near. The guy cleaned the debris from the shredded belt - looks like the tensioner on the auxiliary belt failed..

Trouble is that when started, the engine now rattles and runs very noisily and he thinks that debris could have got into the cam belt and the belt could have slipped teeth (and bent valves??)..  He doesn't want to touch it further..

Anyone got any thoughts as to how likely this is?

What advice would anyone give??

How much would it cost me to get someone to check the cam belt and reposition it if necessary? What are the chances of me being lucky??

The car is in South East Wales if there are any Samaritans out there!!

Newbie Welcome Area / A thank U to  Ronnie McB
« on: 21 October 2006, 03:53:14 »
I eventually shifted my ass to collect a wheel won on eBay and found myself in Nottingham on Weds this week.. I came away with the wheel, lots of good advice and a reference to this forum.. Having never participated in such a site before (due to a preconceived idea) and I was determined not to be interested in a site full of Geeks or Anoracs...

PLEASE read on before I get booted off on my first day...

It is now 3.52am Sunday and the time has flown and I have to congratulate you on 100 days well spent!!! I have found the site useful and informative and reading your posts has even made me chuckle at times  ;D ;D !!  If you are all as friendly and knowledgeable as 'Ronnie' then I hope you will accept me as a member.. I'm more likely to read what others post than write too much myself - but keep things going as the site is appreciated greatly.. Thanks again from a (wet behind the ears/non-God) Newby

General Car Chat / Engine reconditioning
« on: 27 October 2010, 17:10:03 »
http://www.reconditioned-engines.co.uk/remanufacture-engine-process.shtml

Any comments on the value of this service?

Is it something that anyone has used?? - would anyone consider using something like this to bring the engine back to "new"  ::)

I've got a broken engine at the moment and was interested to see this site.. It seems reasonably priced and looks enticing.. includes 60,000 miles / 5 year guarantee (but sadly more than I can afford at the moment !!)

I'm looking at cheaper alternatives  ;) ;)

General Discussion Area / Cam Belt - Slipped by 4.5 Teeth & 3.5 Teeth
« on: 19 February 2008, 09:07:23 »
A public apology and a huge vote of thanks!!

I have been so busy and nowhere near a computer for 10 days so I haven't been able to post about a recent miraculous escape.

James (V6CDX) came to South Wales on Saturday 9th Feb to look at a stricken sickly MV6..

..People may remember a post about a shredded Aux belt that a mechanic thought may have caused the cam belt to have slipped, it was making such a racket that he was not prepared to go any further..

We looked at the timing and thought ugh, but turning the engine James thought that he could feel compression on all cylinders so as we had all the parts at our feet - we thought that we had nothing to loose!!

New belts, water pump, aux tensioner assembly etc later... the moment of truth -

 ;D  ;D  ;D  ;D  ;D            Sweet as a nut !!!!!!!         ;D  ;D  ;D  ;D  ;D

The vehicle was driven home, only 2 miles -  just to try her - there are a couple of minor things to look at, cam covers leaking and a little hunting when idling - probably a result of putting the engine together with a torch in the dark but she is alive...

THANK YOU JAMES   :y  :y

General Discussion Area / How to get Trade Cards
« on: 28 November 2007, 01:21:28 »
I see references to TC or trade cards, do I assume this is to get trade prices at Vauxhall Garages and therefore genuine parts.. or is this for some other trade outlet??

Could one of you let me know what these are... and how to get one - as I suspect I'll be needing several expensive parts in the next few weeks  :(

Thanks,

NICK
