I've got the same problem.. Except mines not jammed locked!!

...well it was but it's now open and I can manually open and close it..

What needs changing??

I had this the other day.. I thought all vauxhall dealers would accept tc.. Not all do as I found out..

But to my surprise the Guy said "we don't participate in tc.. but no problem I'll give you trade price anyway"

Couldn't believe it - what a pleasant surprise!

but would I be happy driving it again after such major work??

I'll not take that personally ;) :P ;D ;D ;D

Just flip a coin Nick and no best of 3, 5 etc.  ;D

No offence Lee - it's not a doubt about your skills!!!

Anyway, if it was on my drive I'd probably c**k it up!!

I bought it as near as perfect as a car can be at 50K / 5 years - now I feel it needs a lot spending on it to bring it back to where it was then..

I really can't afford to do anything other than put old (heads) on now - and when I get money again I know I'll regret not having put new ones!!

I need someone to reassure me that everything will actually be OK..  :D ;D ;D ;D

The other problem -  as you all know - is that we become attached to the bottomless pockets that we need to keep our bl**dy cars running as we want them!!

So why do we??   :o  >:( ;D ;D ;D

The actual resale value doesn't really count, it's what it's worth to you or what you'd have to spend on a similar 'new' replacement. I spent my car's resale value and more on just fuel earlier this year when we went to France, but I've had the car for about 7 years and know what's been done & what's likely to need doing.
If you can't do the spannering, then scrapping might be the cheapest option, but as said, a couple of heads won't cost that much & really aren't difficult to fit .... honest.  :y
You can ask here if you get stuck on anything.  :y  :y  :y

Thanks for that,
But fuel is just fuel and has to be used anyway.. and it's not just the cost of the heads though is it.. By the time you've bought bolts and the gasket sets, not to mention yet another cam belt kit.. and the services of OOF expert..

.. and who's to know what the "new" head is like??

I think we all knowingly waste more money than the Omega is worth,  I would repair it as you know the history of the car and if you replace it with another Omega you may need deep pockets to get to where you are now

This true.. but where to draw the line   :-/

Thanks..

I'm handy enough to break anything!!   :y

Fixing it would be someone else's job..  ;D ;D

This is really a question of head over heart..
It would be a shame to break the car!! - but would I be happy driving it again after such major work??

Omega General Help / Repair or Break??
« on: 23 October 2010, 11:08:13 »
Hi all..

Not sure if this is the right place to post this.. and I hope somone will move it if necessary  ;)

Firstly, an apology to those who think it seems strange that a grown man can't make a decission.. But under different personal circumstances the decission would be easy..

I'd like to have some feedback and comments on a dilema (while I wait to have the parts priced!!)..

Repair or break?     (Deal or no Deal   ;D ;D)

Some of you will have seen a post about a MV6 with a broken cam tensioner bolt.

I'm currently struggling to make a decission about what to do..

The bolt has snapped and it looks like the vehicle will need quite a wedge spending to put it back on the road..

Is it worth it I ask myself??

Positives
Low milleage 86K,
Nice black leather
Minor body blemishes - supermarket dings stone chips
I've had it 5 years and it's not been driven hard in that time.
The previous owner spent whatever Vauxhall robbed off him every time it went in for service..
New exhaust
New discs
New dis pack
New tyres
3 sets of alloys (incl originals)
Has been reliable.
Omega V6!!

Negatives.
11 years old
Cost of the job
Future problems
Resale value !!!

Can I have some feedback please??
Will the car really be the same after having the engine removed and second hand heads (probably from a higher mileage motor) fitted??
If it were your car what would you do??

My main problem is that it is sat on someones drive at the moment and I'm ashamed to say I've stalled on making the decission - and a big thank you to that person for being patient  ;)

40k or 4 years MAXIMUM!!!!

How many had the one on your drive done before it broke

17k, just under 2 years. On dismantling it was the bolt holding the top idler between the 2 banks that had snapped. Best guess it that it wasn't tightened properly by the garage that fitted the belt. Day of truth today as I'm fitting an old belt to see if it turns over by hand.

Actually the car had done NO more than 500 miles since it was fitted!!   >:(

Just make sure you do it properly, tighten everything, and then check again.. Mistakes are costly!!

I would recommend using someone from this site just to make sure!

I got mine fitted properly, but then paid a garage to replace oil seal on crank.. I forgot to check their work and now I've got a dead Mig!!   :'(

There a mile out....cam 1 and 2 are sat in the same positions so are a good 120 deg out!

If you look at the water pump, there's shredded 'something' on there.. It seems (but I've not moved the belt yet) that the crank might have pulled the teeth off the inside of the belt?..  :-/

What should I do next? ?

Do I assume the worst and dismantle further to investigate?

Nick, check your PM's and give me a call. I'll come take a look. You can report back then.

Thanks Lee.. I'll give you a call tomorrow afternoon if that's ok..   :y

After a long delay - (my fault only)

A BIG THANK YOU to Welung.. and to other OOF members who are rallying around to help  :y

The car is now in his capable hands - waiting to see just how much damage has been done!

It would be a shame to have to break this car - but I'm afraid it's now in the lap of the Gods  :-/

Nick - to give us an indication - assuming the lower idler hasn't been touched since this failure - can you clarify what position the arrow on it, is in?

The arrow is now at aprox 10/20 degrees clockwise from vertical (and the bearing is free running)

Can you moved to TDC, and retake?

I may be having a blonde moment, but 1 looks to be way out of sync with 2?

I've just taken the photos as I found things.. How do I move to TDC with the tensioner bolt broken?
