General Car Chat / 2017 Reliability - Small Cars & by brand

The Renault Modus in a Nissan Note disguise is the most unreliable. Who would of thought it? ::) ::) ::)

Jaguar as a brand is well down the list, so I guess it is a 'good' replacement for ex-Omega owners! :o :o :o

On any forum and in life we need to understand that we all make mistakes, we all misconstrue ourselves, make jokes that only we find funny and we are intentionally (banter) and unintentionally at times offensive to other people, etc, etc. The opposite side is we help people with repairing Omegas, cars in general and other things, use our trades, skills and experience to help with diverse problems, give support when people are down and make people laugh with witty comments. A good thing in life is to be slow to anger and take offence and to be quick to praise and help. (Something that is emphasized on advanced driving courses, accept you and every driver makes mistakes and don't get involved in road-rage!) Personally, I think OOF is one of the best online communities in the world and it is all of you that contribute and make it so. All of you pat yourselves on the back for another year of contributions and comments, well done. :y :y :y

A thank you to the Brackley hamster for powering the server and your flatulence not blowing up the garage again. ::) ::) ::) TB for working his server magic and all the other OOF admins for their behind the scenes hard work in making the site work  :y :y :y and controlling us unruly lot. :o :o :o

OOF is a good positive nice place to be mostly, so lets all make it even better in 2018. :y :y :y

Wishing everybody on here a happy, safe, healthy, prosperous and great new year and 2018. :y :y :y

Is a terrible incurable brain degenerative disease caused by a defective gene. But a new drug trail is showing real promise is stopping the disease through injecting the drug into the person's spinal fluid. This major breakthrough may have major implications for the treatment of other brain degenerative diseases like Parkinson's and Alzheimer's.

General Discussion Area / Winter Tyres
« on: 11 December 2017, 14:27:18 »
You know you've all been poised on the edge of your seats, keyboards at the ready, waiting for somebody to start one. ::) :o ;D

In Ukraine you feed the police slush funds get fined if you don't have winter tyres fitted from November to March which means along with a good snowplow network typical regular 1mm-500mm snowfall with occasional large 1m-2m snowfalls causing remarkably little disruption. You will go to work, teachers will go to school, school buses will run and children will be there except in very exceptional circumstance. Only time I've known it to be a problem for one day was 2m of snow overnight with strong winds and a blizzard continuing the next day with up to 4m drifts, when the kids had the days off as only a few teachers made it to work and it took that day to restore reasonable road normality. :y :y :y

They do have occasional winters with no snow, where normally they have short mild spells in between their cold bad weather which generally comes from the north and Siberia. Warm spells will be like our January temperatures with rain, cold spells will typically be up to -25degC, but I have known an exceptional -35degC which damaged many trees and other perennial plants. Although it is much colder than the UK with an average temperature of -7degC compare to +5degC here in January and February.

When you buy a car you buy a second set of wheels fitted with winter tyres. If you have nowhere to keep the spare set your local garage will store, fit and remove them for a small annual fee. :y :y :y

« on: 09 December 2017, 18:49:11 »
Scientists have proven the existence of a new form of matter, which was theorised over 50 years ago, but has now been proven to exist. It is a positively charged particle formed when an electron escapes from an atom, leaving a hole where the electron used to reside.

I'm sure where this is a Midland's story you see this kind of thing happens in Wakefield and Brackley all the time, but fortunately it is rare round here. Take one microwave, mix up 7 bags of Polyfilla, stick your head in the microwave and pour the Polyfilla around your head where you want to make a mold of it and let it set. When his friends couldn't release him they had to call the emergency services who took almost an hour freeing him! :o :o :o

...except in the world of quantum physics. Where in theory an atom can get hotter while an adjacent one gets cooler in an arrow of time reversal. This has now been proven in an experiment at a UK university using chloroform atoms.

General Discussion Area / Nickel-Cobalt Batteries
« on: 28 November 2017, 21:31:01 »
Nickel-Cobalt are seen as the future for electric vehicles, renewable storage and backup etc. They have a similar energy density as Li-ion, have cheaper manufacturing costs, don't present a fire hazard and therefore don't need about 25% of their volume and weight taken up with charge-discharge temperature control electronics like Li-ion batteries, can be charged from 0 to 100% in 30 minutes, have no memory effect or deep discharge loss of capacity and when they do eventually wear out they can be reconditioned more cheaply just by remanufacturing the electrodes.

http://www.nickelcobaltbattery.com/

They are the next generation battery and the key to mass-market viable electric transport. Elon Musk has invested $1bn in a mass manufacturing plant for their mass production. So far, so good, the futures bright it is Nickel-Colbolt batteries. :y :y :y

Except for what has been termed the Cobalt-Cliff. About 150,000tons are mined and smelted every year with about 90,000tons in China and 60,000tons in the rest of the world. About 60,000tons are globally used in traditional industries which are not as cost critical as batteries and China is committed to using the majority of their Cobalt production for their own nickel-cobalt battery production. Current estimates are that by 2025 there will be a 25,000ton shortfall in cobalt production with this only getting worse as demand for nickel-cobalt batteries grows where governments are now committing to all-electric cars by 2040. The only two solutions are that unknown new global supplies of cobalt are found, which currently is not looking likely or a new different battery technology comes along in what is a very short timescale where battery development, testing and longterm reliability is not a quick development cycle. :-[ :-[ :-[

https://notalotofpeopleknowthat.wordpress.com/2017/11/25/the-cobalt-cliff/

Finally, what is the situation with Elon Musk's $1bn battery production facility? ::) ::) ::) Well, it looks like he may not have secured supplies of cobalt to make them and several investors are now getting twitchy and are threatening to sue him if he can't prove he has secured a suitable supply chain for cobalt. :o :o :o
