Found this whilst surfing today and recommended by several insurance companies you can now obtain a universal ankle restraint for automatic drivers. They are also considering increasing premiums for automatic drivers that dont have them fitted, seemingly thee has been a lot of incidents with automatic drivers not knowing which foot to use, Thankfully for me I have a manual

I drive a RHD auto and a LHD manual

I am fully ambidextrous - hand break, gear lever, rear-view mirror, pedals... the lot!

Can't say i've ever had a problem, drive both manuals and auto's.

I've always driven auto's with right foot for the accelerator and left for the brake.

Ankle restraints

What "Sull Bhit" money spinner will they come up with next.
It's easy, drive an Auto...forget you have a left foot.

My problems start when I occasionally drive a manual. They don't like it when you selecting gears without using that pedal on the left.
"KERUNCH" (...Doh !!).

Apparently onlookers find the art of "juddering to a standstill whilst still in 5th" quite entertaining too.

Some driving instructors teach people to drive autos like.....theres a theory you can brake faster :-/

A few years ago i asked an examiner the corect way to use your feet in an auto, his answer was which either way you feel comfortable with.

'fraid so!

Becomes natural after a while. People who left foot brake for the first time tend to pull an emergency stop so don't try it unless you've got no one beind you. I don't ride the brake pedal with my left foot, I just move it across when needed, in traffic it's a lot easier.

Don't know why I do it, just feels easier, you don't have to move your foot from the throttle.

Possibly - but if you switch from auto to manual regularly, it is best to keep with same leg for braking just to make sure you don't get confused in an emergency... if driving a a manual, your left foot will be busy depressing the clutch.

Swapping from Auto to manual has never been a problem (apart from me counting the gear changes and thinking 'Why?'), instinct seems to kick in as soon as I get in a manual and i've performed emergency braking in both without problems.

I guess it's just what you get used to, I've driven Automatics and manuals ever since I passed my test so I never have to think about it but if you are an infrequent Manual or Automatic driver I guess it could catch you out.

I believe it is suggested to use right leg all time, except slow speed manovering... (engine can surge etc when reversing etc...)

... which is unfortunately where I messed up ... not a problem using one foot on each pedal under normal circumstances, but under emergency braking it would appear that old habits learnt in a manual die hard, with a 3.0 V6 under the right foot and brakes under the left (weaker leg) this does not bring the desired results !!

lets just say I'm waiting to hear if I'm going to be looking for an estate earlier than expected ... well, that and miggy's make good battering rams
