Bless the darlin' agents
« on: 18 October 2007, 18:51:42 »

I took my 2.6 V6 2001 Manual estate to the dealers today to have the 'wailing alarm' diagnosed and possibly the Powersounder replaced . They said the Tech 2 could not communicate with my car. Has anyone ever heard of this before? Surely if the computer thingey isn't working then the car wouldn't work. Anyway, as anyone got any ideas as to what I can do.

Polite answers only please!

Also, I noticed the sunroof has stopped working!

Did they successfully talk to anything or was it just the alarm that wasn't playing?

Only thing I can imagine that might prevent it talking at all would be the power feed to the diagnostic socket so have a look and see if any fuses have blown. Could be the same one as the sunroof?

Tech2 may not even require power from that socket in the first place.

I can imagine them having trouble talking to the sounder if it went the same way as mine. Conductive goo from the batteries all over the board. Wouldn't stop them talking to the alarm unit itself AFAIK.

Have you tried unplugging the power sounder? Bonnet switch? Disabling the ultrasonics with the switch on the dash? Sorry if these have been covered before but they seem to be the most likely suspects.

Thanks for quick reply

They SAID that the Tech 2 would not talk to the car at all, so they couldn't even tackle the Powersounder problem. In fairness, they didn't charge me any thing

How do you unplug the Powersounder? my neighbours would love to know!

If you haven't tried setting it with the bonnet switch unplugged or with the ultrasonic sensors disabled by the switch try that first. Otherwise, remove the scuttle cover and the power sounder is beneath this cover just behind the front driver's side suspension turret. There's probably a howto on here somewhere but this is what it looks like:

.. and this is what happened to mine when the batteries leaked:

Remove the plug within 15 seconds of switching off the ignition to stop it sounding (likely the batteries are shot anyway, so it's more than likely not going to go off). If it protests, remove the whole thing and wrap it in a towel until it shuts up.

Thank you for your knowledgable comments.
The alarm only goes off early morning in the rain and the cold. So I suspect Powersounder
Can I simply unplug the bonnet switch? Where?
If I do disconnect the powersounder , will it upset the rest of the car

BUT

I still have the problem of the Tech 2 issue!

If you loiter in the forums for a while .. you'll find that the Administrators have the "power" to reduce a persons "post count" at will ... usually for humour or minor indiscretions .... so some apparent "newbies" are actually very experienced long-term members !!! I have noticed that ... on occasions ... their post-count suddenly returns .. just as fast as it declines ... :)

So .. don't upset the admin staff !!!  I find the odd "grovel, grovel, certainly m'Lord" helps .. :)

Interesting, I had the same thing (Tech II couldn't talk to the car) when I took it to an Opel dealer on the continent. he tried two different units. Mine is similar to yours in that it's a facelift, and uses the Motronic ECU.

Eventually took it to Vauxhall back in the UK who didn't report any issues. Never did sort that out.

I don't know quite what he did. If the main agants can't get it right you begin to wonder if it is worth owning a car like this. I'll have to leave it for now. Tell me, are the batteries in the Pwersounder rechargeable or do they eventually go flat?
