Omega General Help / Air con and heater matrix.
« on: 06 May 2009, 14:57:09 »
Got the A/C regassed today and my Air conditioning appears to have a leak. I took the dust cap off the low pressure valve and it is definately hissing. Also I put my finger on the valve and you can feel a slight pressure.

Is is possible to buy a replacement valve and do you need a considerable number of components?

Answers appreciated as already had two showers today. ;D Its getting like 36 deg C.

Also is the a/c system at all linked to the heater matrix?

I am getting this funny vibration noise from the engine bay just as the engine settles after revving (say around 750-1000 rpm). It lasts for only a second or and only happens with the A/C running. You can't really see anything either.

Anyone ever experience this before.

Omega General Help / Removing oxidation for good
« on: 21 April 2009, 09:48:12 »
Is it possible to remove oxidation for good? last year I polished the paintwork by hand to get rid of the oxidation that was forming on the paintwork. I have just noticed that the oxidation is showing signs of returning, whilst I don't mind giving it another polish, I'm just wary of the fact that the paint may begin to wear thin. (Also it's beginning to get bloody hot, humid and horrible and don't fancy getting totally soaked in sweat again).

I had this problem with my G reg mark II Astra about 8 years ago. Mexico red it was.   :)

Omega General Help / Changing bonnet struts
« on: 20 April 2009, 04:52:13 »
My bonnet struts gave up on Friday and I bought a new pair yesterday. It was interesting to note that GM does not supply new bolts!

Question is, do you need to remove the padding to the underside of the bonnet in oder to change the strut? Just wondering whether at the bonnet end it is a snap fixing?

many thanks again.

Omega General Help / Cleaning up headlamp lenses
« on: 12 April 2009, 04:50:30 »
Managed to prise off the headlamp lenses without removing the entire ligh from the car. It had turned out that the heat has severly weakend the glue and the lens came off without too much difficulty.

Everyone was convinced that the crap on the lens was on the inside as it would not budge when I attempted to clean it whilst on the car. It turned out it was all on the outside.

After removing it, I tried using silver polish, rubbing compound, alloy wheel cleaner and nail polish remover but still it hasn't fully gone. It's like the dirt is embedded in the plastic and you would have to go quite far in to remove it. Even tried a bit of very fine sandpaper, lol. But it does look a lot whiter and al least you can make out the light components now, not like the diffused white mess I used to get previously. I'll do the other one next weekend.

When refixing the plastic headlamp lens back onto the main structure, is it ok to use bathroom silicone sealant? Or should you use a glue?

many thanks.

Omega General Help / Hydraulic tappet noise
« on: 01 April 2009, 18:34:39 »
When the engine warms up I notice a ticking noise in the cabin coming from the engine bay. This is more noticeable when the doors are shut and windows up. If you stand at the front of the car with the bonnet up it is not necessarily apparent. Is this a hydraulic tappet noise and can it be cured?
Many thanks

Omega General Help / Slight wander over raised road markings
« on: 12 March 2009, 17:15:30 »
I've noticed that my car slightly wanders when I go over raised road markings, or when there are tramlines. When going over the raised roadmarking you can see the steering move to the left or right slighty before going back to centre. The droplinks were changed along with the wishbone bushes. I think it could be this steering arm idler. My tyres are quite wide but I don't think they are the cause.

I'm not sure whether that explains why my steering wheel is slightly off centre.

Omega General Help / DEPO or HELLA headlamps
« on: 10 March 2009, 11:10:12 »
I'm still contemplating buying a new pair of headlamps. I popped into my local parts shop yesterday to have a look at the original equipment ones, Hella. It seemed very plasticy and very lightweight and sort of wondered, can the ones made by DEPO in Taiwan be much worse.

Does anyone have any experience of the ones made by DEPO and whether they are OK to buy and install?

A new headlamp HELLA supplied by GM cost about GBP 300 here.  You can get both DEPO's for about 400 euros.

Omega General Help / Cleaning instrument panel plastic lens
« on: 18 February 2009, 16:10:59 »
You know the plastic lens that sits in front of the instrument panel, is it to clean that with polishing or rubbing compound? Mines a bit dirty with a few stains that wont come off with mild cleaner.

Omega General Help / Infotainment warning messages
« on: 10 February 2009, 15:54:17 »
When a warning message shows up on the infotainment system, such as low windscreen washer fluid or low coolant, whatever, is the only way to clear the message by depressing the button on the wiper stalk?

If the message goes out itself, is that likely to be a faulty sensor?

Omega General Help / Tightening auto dip rear view mirror
« on: 26 January 2009, 18:04:00 »
Is there any way that the swivel movement of the rear view mirror can be tightened in its socket? At the moment if I go round a bend a bit fast, the mirror swivels and I have to adjust it back.

Omega General Help / Pipes to power steering reserviour
« on: 22 January 2009, 17:47:08 »
The 2 pipes connecting to the power steering reserviour seem quite tricky to get to. Is it possible to move the cluster of wires and the heater hose which is causing an obstruction easily?

Thanks.
