Title: Gearbox issue HELP | i10 sticks in 3rd gear . .
Post by: Alnico Blue on 28 December 2019, 14:14:38
Any advice gents  . . . hyundai i10 2011.   SWMBO  had to put on brakes sharply. .  .since then car gets to 3rd gear and shifter will not come out of 3rd to select another gear .
On the driveway all gears are selectable with or without engine running.
Pull away  . . .go through 1st & 2nd then straight to 4th  .  .all ok  . .then to 5th all OK.
As soon as 3rd is selected with the car moving it will not come out of 3rd. Even stopping and turning engine off it is still jammed.   Once in this jammed position the only way to get it to release is to slightly rock the car forwards or backwards , just a tad then gear shift moves out of 3rd  ok.
Gearbox oil is correct &  to the right level .
I feel it is not a linkage issue as all gears are easy to find when stationary ,The problem happens as soon as 3rd is selected with the car moving . the selection of 3rd when moving feels ok and smooth & no different to selecting other gears .

Strange this  . . .  any gearbox specialists out there to advise or suggest  as cannot see anything on any iternet forums etc. pointing to thuis issue..  thanks,   Al :y

New cables ;)
Is that a known cure for this sort of issue Doctor ?

We have tried to move the levers on top of the gearbox that the cables connect to by hand and lever , Just seems stuck fast until we rock the car  . . then it moves fine  ::) ::)

Cable adjustment might cure it, but basically the selector locks because it's trying to do two things at once. If it's done some miles it could be a gearbox wear issue, but you would expect other symptoms.

Have SWMBO run through the gears (engine off) whilst you watch what happens. All should be revealed... ;)

I seem to recall that the i10 from around 2010ish does seem to shag gearboxes towards 100k.

If all the other gears engage and disengage normally I would think the problem is within the gearbox itself, normally a cable issue will affect more than one gear

update:   yep gearbox shagged . . .74k miles . . .    got one from a 2013  model with 35k on it.

Was gonna try new cables first but  "The Hyundai spare part price list" seemed to have a decimal point in the wrong place  . . .£208   for a pair of cables 60cm long  with a small bracket attached :o :o

New clutch and box and an O/S front wheel bearing  fitted yesterday  . . .car drives so much better.

Swmbo loves  it now  :y :y :y.   ( BTW   N/S front wheel bearing was done just before I brought the car)

thanks for your advice OOFERS  :y

The gearbox does seem to be a weak point on them, set to fail just as the 7yr/70k warranty expires.

Shame, as otherwise they seem a robust enough car, perfect for round town, albeit a of a bit bland drive.

There is a lot more than the gearbox falls off a cliff after the 7 year warranty sadly.

I spoke with quite a few owners before I got this for SWMBO . . .they all seemed impressed  . .

Maybe they were reluctant to admit that they also should not have brought one !

Parts prices are shocking !      I want to move it on  . . .but SWMBO loves it now

I wonder what the next major failure will be  :'( :'( :'( :'(

Parts prices are shocking !       ....

We found that years ago when SWMBO had a Lantra

..... cheap cars made from expensive parts!  ;D ;D

The secret with cars that have seven year warranty is to sell/trade them after six.

the cars are at worst OK, and are improving.
they're cheap to buy new, and are generally reliable(far better than any European marque)
routine maintenance is cheap
They're not worth much when the warranty runs out, but you'll still have lost less than an expensive car with better residuals. And those don't have 7 year warranties, so you hit the costs sooner

So you have the usual two choices: keep it until it needs an expensive repair, or trade it in for another. Your own preferences for expenditure and knowledge of how stuff lasts for you will make the decision.

Hyundai/Kia(which are very closely related) parts do cost a bit more than you would expect for the cheaper end of the market, but anyone who has priced Mitsubishi or Honda parts will laugh at you if describe them as expensive.

I'd be looking at any of the small to medium cars first, if I was going to buy a new car. Cars are tools, and all of the pretentious marketing wank from the long established names is an expensive and tedious cost I could do without.

I would never buy a new car, and pay 20% VAT. There are usually pre reg deals to be had.

true, but it's still a car that's only got delivery miles and one owner that never used it.

As I get many years use from cheap, well-used and old cars(the Omega was 13 years, 130k miles and at £1500 the most money I've ever spent on a car) I would expect a new, zero mile car to last as long as my licence - I will be 50 this summer. I've a friend my parent's age who is still driving the '86 Orion he bought new - it looks a heap, but keeps going at less than a couple of monthly payments per year. Mike says he'll stop driving when the car does, or weigh it in if he gives up first.

I think that's probably the story with my diesel astra. It's got a couple of battle scars and is muddy from my exploits with pooch. Only 60,000 miles yet, but I intend to get the cambelt done soon and I can't see why it shouldn't do at least another 60,000. Then I'll get the cambelt done again, and so on.

Next time there is a failure, price the part so it makes the car beyond economic repair.

....but anyone who has priced Mitsubishi or Honda parts will laugh at you if describe them as expensive.

Tell me about it. Honda Civic, not an uncommon car, a shim, as in a single shim to sit on the caliper carrier, the metal shaped one that the pads sit on. Dealer only part, £27+vat each, the front needed 4  :o I ordered 8 from Honda in Japan, £47 delivered.

Gearbox issues aside, the 4 that are close to me have proven stupidly reliable, with little more than the most basic annual service.

Certainly not a car for me, but as a local around town car, cant really fault it.  Cheap to run, easy to service, little to dislike if you never need to use back seats, reliable.  Dull and dreary, yes.

Another friend runs an NSX as his daily, and bought the first few parts he needed from the local dealer 8 miles away. They are special order, and usually took 2 or 3 days to arrive. Now, he orders them from the US, which even with shipping and custom charges rarely costs more than half of what G&M charge and are delivered to his door in a similar amount of time. Normal service items like oil, plugs, filters and belts are, of course, bought from the trade factor opposite where he works, and if the car is immobilised he just uses his special car instead.

Another friend runs an NSX as his daily,

A truly rare car - I base that only on the fact that I've seen maybe 2 on the public road moving under their own power in 20+ years of driving.. fair play for running one as a daily! It'll probably be in much better nick than all the ones that are sat, slowly rotting, in 'climate controlled storage' as part of an investment scheme.

A mate of mine had one, then replaced it and had a string of pretty tasty cars since. He still wishes he'd kept it.
