I am off to North Uist the Western Isles again next week but I have decided to drive rather than fly this time. According to the AA route planner its 10 hrs and 460 miles to Uig on the Isle of Skye where I catch the ferry. The sad thing is I will be using the wifes Rover 25 diesel because it does at least twice the mpg the Omega does . The other sad thing is I will be setting off at 11pm on Sundat night to catch the 9am ferry on Monday so it will be dark and I wont see much scenery.
Thats a pity cos the drive up to Skye has some very nice scenery, mainly just before you enter glencoe, driwing through glencoe and some nice long stretches of road before you hit glencoe itself, after you cross the bridge after glencoe to Fort william around 12 miles (Glenoce to fort bill), on just windy roads and not many opportunities to overtake. The drive from Fort Bill over to Skye is very good up into the mountains and back down again. the road up to Uig should be fairly quiet also and again some spectacular scenery on the Isle of Skye used to go there every year for a weeks climbing.
The good point is the roads will be pretty quiet for you, the bad points one of which you mentioned it will be dark, and your not driving the meega
. Hopefully it will be light on yer way back. Stop off at the Sligachan Inn on Skye and have a wee pint and tell Duncan the owner i was asking for him
