Weird electrics
« on: 29 December 2008, 18:02:53 »

Car failed MOT the other day (steering idler arm, two indicator bulbs as orange paint worn off and rear number plate light). Fixed everything apart from rear number plate light. ;D

Bought a new bulb and put it in, still not working but now when I start the car I get a tail light warning on the display as well as a brake light warning. Have to say the old bulb was goosed (it came apart in my hand as I tried to pull it out). ::)

Could this be causing the new warning or is it more likely I have disturbed something on the main light cluster when changing the indicator bulbs. >:(

Ok, re-check the bulb and its contacts....if you can, check for the presence of 12V across the contacts with the lights on

Thanks Mark. Fixed it. Got out the multimeter and checked the contacts, 13 volts, so then plugged the holder back in and checked the contacts there, 13 volts.

Got really confused then because the bulb was brand new. Took bulb that looked the same out of tail light cluster and tried that and it worked.

rather Halfrauds sold me a duff bulb by the looks of it. I will say that the one out of the cluster has one contact on the bottom where the halfrauds one has two?

Anyway fixed now but thanks for pointing me in the right direction. :y
