General Discussion Area / Astra F
« on: 31 August 2007, 14:26:35 »
My 'clever' son has put his SRS/air bag light on on his Astra F by ..... continuing to drive it when the charge light had come on when the 'fan belt' came off (probably triggered by low voltage)  :-?
I have a cheapo Tech II for my cars however his is the older Tech I connector. I've been quoted, from those few who were able to do so, fom £30 to £50(vauxhall :-?) to turn off the light.

My question is ..... can you buy a "cheapo Tech I" to talk to the older Vauxhalls rather than line someone's pocket for less than 5 mins work?
TIA

Does anyone have any recomendations for an inexpensive lap top for my daughter to take away to 'uni' at the end of next month?

« on: 16 August 2007, 09:30:10 »
My son passed his driving test on Monday (3rd attempt) and has obviously started to look at buying a car. Do any of you have any recommendations for insurers for a 19 year lad? I never expected insurance to be cheap, but 2 grand to insure a £500 1.4 Astra seems to be taking the pi$$.

General Discussion Area / gear box oil
« on: 23 July 2007, 23:58:00 »
... in a diesel Astra. According to Haynes a manual gearbox should have 'Gear oil 09 120 541' in it. The 'box I've just taken out .... what tw4t of a job! >:( ... had a horrible EP looking oil in it, whereas my 'new' box was nearly filled with red ATF.
Does anyone know what I should have in it?
All answers gratefully recieved. ;)

Should 'we' have burried an Omega for posterity when it was shiney & new like this Plymouth. Tulsa should have had Steven King at the unveiling.  ;D   ;D  ;D
Perhaps we could we could make a belated effort with a certain diseasel!  ;D  ;D

« on: 13 July 2007, 08:05:38 »
I've been toying with a change of car, & although I've said I won't have another Omega I can't afford the best part of £30k to buy & then run a V8 Chrysler 300C  ;D.
I was thinking of this

Am I right in thinking that they they only come with 3 pedals  :(

On the way down to Cornwall on 30/07/07 I pulled over to let Mrs B have her nictotene fix somewhere south of Exeter (No.... that wasn't the 1st stop! ;D). I was followed into the garage forecourt by a low loader carrying a poorly W reg facelift silver 2.5 TD. Anyone here?

Any ex squaddies on the forum

I was in the guards, came out after the Falklands conflict

 :y

I was in the "Senior Service"  ;) up untill 20 years ago. Spent a lot of time in Big Rod & Hotel 21's part of the world

Did you see any of the Falklands with the Navy, you would have been still in at that time.
Had a few mate that sailed up the estuary on that sad day

I was still a 'baby apprentice' in '82 so I didn't go down at the time. I did a tour of duty down there a few years later though, went ashore in Port Stanley to make a phone call (it's a pity mobiles weren't around at the time as it was something like £1-50 a minute using the satalite phone thingy). It's a bit like Scotland down there... but without the trees!  ;)  :y
The closed down whaling stations in South Gorgia were interesting though, trying to creep up on penguins.  ::)  ::)  ;D

This is descibed as having 'Xenons' fitted. Am I right in thinking that it would have colour coded headlamp washers nfitted to the top of the bumper if they were fitted?

And this car doesn't! It's to be hoped that its new owner checks up on the detail when (s)he collects it.

General Discussion Area / dim dip
« on: 17 April 2007, 20:13:05 »
It's not an Omega ..... but still a Vauxhall ;) ..... but I'm asking for a friend.

E reg MkII Cavalier SRi130  has decided it wants to leave its lights on despite which position the switch is in.
First guess is a faulty dim-dip relay but ....... does anyone know where it lives?
TIA

 .... not as I do.
I think I might have said that before, but I wish I'd been in a position to film the X5 reversing back along the hard shoulder to an exit slip road, but he might have done me for holding my mobile phone whilst driving. The X5 in question, just incase you hadn't all guessed, had a set of blue lights on top - that were OFF I might add!  :-? F***s you off doesn't it when we don't all play by the same road rules!  >:(

General Discussion Area / Brake pads
« on: 15 January 2007, 18:10:52 »
:-[  :-[ I have to admit that despite the 'brake pads' warning appearing on my GID in about October, I finally found the time/effort/weather the change 'em this afternoon. There was about an 1/8th" of lining left!  :-[
And ...... in the rush to put em in before it went dark I've put the shimmed pad in on the outboard side of the calipers  :( If they squeal I'll sort it. If not .....  ;)
