Omega General Help / A smell of petrol
« on: 07 October 2006, 18:45:11 »
Whatever next!
I've started to detect a smell of fuel in the cabin when stopping or making sharp turns (at low speed).  Today it was quite obvious (before, I'd assumed it was someone in front).  The MID display is about right - when warmed on idle ~0.2g/? with the AC off.  Fuel consumption has been a tad high on the MID for a while (but short journeys, winter etc).  Nothing obviously leaking about the engine bay although on idle I can smell just a whiff of petrol.  No EML when running.  No running or starting problems.  The boot area smells clean - no fuel there.  The interior fan is normally on at least a little.  I gave it a little 'testing' this afternoon, all sound pretty good and plenty of 'load' without any problems or daft fat spots (that I noticed anyway).
Any thoughts?  Is there some pressure test I can carry out.  Only significant work done recently is cam belt (a while back - don't think thats it) and wishbones (twice - they did the wrong bushes) - and geometery alignment.  I don't drive the car often, but it seems to be getting worse/more frequent.

General Car Chat / Am I being told porkies - Cam cover seals
« on: 09 January 2010, 23:17:58 »
It shouldn't happen to anyone - but my lemon of a 2.6 seems to be weeping oil on the driver's side bank.

Now I asked locally and I'm being told that the plastic covers warp to due the heat (more than the gaskets giving up on their own) and will most likely need replacing (at £56 a pop x4).

I've not heard of this before.

I should add; the breathers and gaskets were supposedly cleaned and changed before I bought this one but I did have the rear crankcase oil seal fail (and since changed) within a hundred or so miles of picking it up end of summer (remember to sunshine?).

Porkies - possible - likely ???

General Car Chat / Well she made it back
« on: 01 September 2009, 22:23:03 »
That's the main thing.  There, onwards and back home.  Didn't do any driving in the weeks away.

But still leaking oil? at those two torx bolts (would call it the bell-housing but it's not really).

Not convinced, but think it's engine oil.  Anyone up for job (and a half?) - assuming the auto box is coming off.

Just to make me smile more - the A/C lasted about 50 miles before it konked out and left us overheating inside.    :(

General Car Chat / Tyre sizes (for spare)
« on: 31 July 2009, 20:12:33 »
If running 225/55 16s,  is a 195/65 15 any good for a spare?

- is the (spare) wheel itself any good.

Anybody know what is normally provided as spare for a 225/55 16 mig?

General Car Chat / Plug lead removal 2.5L
« on: 27 June 2009, 13:10:21 »
I need to check out a suspect mis-fire and should start with a look down the plug wells.

My lead plug tops don't *seem* to have this clip mechanism to them but don't want to just pull off (although engine hot and I can't get a very good grip yet).  Do they just pull up?

Surely I don't need to take all the clober off (EGR/ICV/Brake servo feeds) just for a look do I ??

Nothing (at all) removed so far.
2.5L v6 mini-f/l - slush-box as it happens.

General Discussion Area / Keswick 2010 site pics (JohnM)
« on: 21 June 2010, 11:14:08 »
As others have posted "on-site" views, thought folk might appreciate a "I can see the pub from here" - well, the beer crates anyway.

From the squiggley lane (should do the 'how many Omegas are there'):-

And 'that' squiggley lane route.  Now you know when it says unsuitable for motor vehicles ...
Walking the road from the other side shows why.
Into the campsite, not recommended.  Leaving that way - I doubt it.

General Discussion Area / Fitting tyres to (small) wheels
« on: 20 April 2010, 12:58:11 »
A bit off the normal tack, but.

Small trailer wheel (8-9" ?). Tubeless.  Wheel now tyreless too!

Is there a way I can pop it back on myself - not having tyre fitting aids to hand?

General Discussion Area / Wanted- Widescreen test card image
« on: 22 November 2009, 15:57:52 »
A (very) long-shot, but you never know!

I'm in need of a widescreen format "test card" to setup my TV.  It doesn't seem that such an image is displayed anymore (24hr TV etc).

I've several restrictions and it needs to come from a pattern generator plugged in on analogue or I can record it off freeview and reply via analogue (just the way the telly service menus seem to work).

- Having a bit of bother getting the linearity correct.  Any pointers useful.

General Discussion Area / Bright sparks and a bit of a fizz
« on: 27 September 2009, 22:03:43 »
Looking into some seemingly random alarm activations I thought I should check out my charging battery voltages today (not sure if the alarm system actually monitors standing V or not).

Good job I did!   On moving the top (large) fuse carriers I heard a  bit of a fizz and then again so switched off.  Couldn't see anything amiss, so restarted.  Oops, then I spotted it.  The top pully wheel (PAS?) was sparking away like the 5th; a very quick switch off followed, and then a battery disconnect to be sure.

Last big fuse (away from the battery)  feeding two reds was being eaten through by the pully.

All repaired now - will see if alarms stop; but it must help!

Starter for ten:  what would I be missing if they have been completely decked and (hopefully) the 80A fuse taken out.
(I know, my garage if the fuse didn't quite blow and set fire the the whole show).

General Discussion Area / Made a bit of a mess
« on: 24 May 2009, 21:14:36 »
with old oil.

Had a bit of a to-do with the oil filter the other weekend - a weekend of showers and rain and soaked tools and aborted jobs and a wet back and a pain in the neck and a burnt arm - you get the idea.

In short, made a bit of a mess is an understatement.

So, how to remove oil from an old tarmac driveway.  I've done two detergent cleans - the first seemed to get it all off (plenty of brown foam to wash away).  But days later could still see some, so a second clean and presure wash.  Lovely sunshine this weekend, oily spodges visible on the drive.

Are there any quick fixes?  If you were to drop some oil, what would you use (on tarmac)?  Nothing too strong, I don't want the drive any worse (old petrol spills seem quite caustic even if rinsed afterwards).

Well anyone can guess the outcome.  Slide an AX into the back (r/n/s) of a stationary Omega and what do you get?  In this case a very poorly Citroen (apparently he couldn't get back into his driver's door) and a messed up rear bumper.  Whilst the gent (yet to be proven) was at fault there were mitigationg circumstances regarding a bigger numpty pratting about at the scene and doing a drive-off.  We might like to fix this up ourselves like civilised beings if feasable.

The bumper is badly scored (no jokes please - well, only good ones), lightly gouged might be fair (been in a good fight) and the wrap around black trim is broken at its mount so it pops in and back out again at will.  The small chrome trim is dented (no real worry) but the rubber behind has been squeezed out just to highlight the ding.  Number two parking sensor is damaged (shame they looked so good).

What is the chance of hidden damage?  This is on the n/s, inside the boot everything looks fine, behind the spare wheel looks fine, underneath seems okay too.  The exhaust took a hit up the tail pipe (red citroen plastic evident) but sounds no noiser than it did last week (have a slight blow on the o/s front).  To be quite honest it looks more like she's reversed into a sturdy hedge.

Given it is not the very best and most pristine example in the whole neigbourhood (it has seen the odd shopping trolley).  Is it necessary to replace the bumper, will a good sander some filler and a spray look half decent do you think?

General Discussion Area / Well I must say:
« on: 11 January 2008, 21:13:53 »
How refreshing the new forum looks.

Okay, it may not be brand spanking new - I've been missing for a while (again), but new to me.
Well done all for the grand work.

What with this and a new MOT things are looking good!
- might even treat her to that oil change when the weather breaks ... (steady!)
