I witnessed someone (No idea who) try that in the queue at immigration at Heathrow once. It swiftly earned him a visit to the "latex glove room" out back. I didn't laugh much.

Point being the factory kit will go straight in whereas aftermarket will invariably require some level of bodgery.

In don't know these days.. I fitted a Brink towbar to the Jag and it just bolted on like a factory one, and the supplied electrics was a CAN box that just plugged into the factory towbar connector and hooked up to a 7 pin plug on the tow bar. No bodgery at all.

That would be ok. Their 1970s designs were actually pretty solid.

I wouldn't take anything valuable on track, we have an old Saxo for it. Even at 750kg plus fat git driving I cooked a set of tyres.

You make another good point. The heavier the car, the more brakes, tyres and fuel you'll get through. Kit cars are thus also a good option.

there's the potential for doing about £10k of wear and tear damage... Notwithstanding any accidental contact or off roading.

Tell me about it - a new plastic front grill costs £580 and that was just cracked by someone carelessly parking in front of me. New rear windscreen (double glazed) £2K.

Doesn't sound ideal as a track day car. A tatty MS-5 would probably be a better bet, and possibly just as much fun.

How safe they are depends entirely on how well organised they are and the mindset of the other drivers.
My advice would be to go along and spectate at an event first and decide if you'd be happy driving.

Thanks good idea, I had a quick look on youtube and it has put me off, looks like stock car racing with the added thrill of many drivers with enthusiasm beyond experience, eg this video at Castel Combehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7NMdX6pb33s.

To keep up I think I would get through a full set of tyres.  Would be much happier on my own on a track in the rain.

Way too many bell ends trying to drift and not a marshal in sight. I wouldn't fancy that one.

I know a family where 3 generations work on a local farm. Being able to pass it on is more a case of keeping their job / livelihood at a time of bereavement than an inheritance that they can cash in.

Labour thought they'd dish out a poke in the eye to the likes of Clarkson. As usual, they were unable to think of consequences beyond the inner cities and it has backfired on them.

There was some variation with the thickness of the thermostat housing casting. Whether that variation extends to the seal as well I couldn't say, but it's been a while.

And to echo Stemos point, it's easy to get wrapped up in something to no benefit.

Oh, it might have been the thickness of the flange vs. the length of the bolts? I remember some combinations that caused some frustration, at any rate.

Yesterday refitted the transfer pipe and bastid bolt. Just now went out and pressure tested the system and its leaking around the Stat at 5psi.  :'(
So need to start the job over again. I m not going to use gasket goo this time if I can help it.
I found what I think is a rubber seal for the Stat housing among my O rings yesterday, but if it turns out not to be the right one, I will probably just buy a whole new housing.
The other problem is going to be the transfer pipe seals.
Are they available separately ? If so where from ? Anyone got a part number for them please ?
Might be worth posting that request up separately I suppose. 

Now you mention it I seem to recall an issue like this in the past where some thermostat housings were not compatible with some seals, due to having a deeper milling for the gasket than the seal was thick.

I wouldn't be surprised, given that heating oil has no road fuel duty, if it has a dye marker in so it can be detected if your tank gets dipped..
