General Car Chat / Auto Aid Breakdown
« on: 22 December 2024, 16:22:29 »
Just a warning for those Omega owners who use this breakdown cover, which I know one or 2 do, that mine has just renewed and I noticed a clause not there before - they only cover cars less than 15yrs old....

Anyone running it?

If so, are you seeing layout issues on this site?

TIA

General Car Chat / Buzzing from headlining/rear window
« on: 21 June 2024, 17:50:58 »
Separating out into a new thread.

Got an intermittent buzzing from somewhere in the back, I believe to be in area of rear headlining or rear window, sounds like an airy wasp stuck in a confined space, or a relay chattering at high frequency.

Remove sigma pod containing the GPS antenna and DAB Band-L receivers, as it appeared to be coming from that area, and putting pressure on PCB changed the tone or eliminated it.

After a test drive with it removed the noise is definitely still there.

I had it present for long enough to do further tests.  The noise disappears if:
any window slightly open
and door open
sunroof tilted or open
climate turned off
pressure applied to OS top of rear window and/or that area of roof.

Can it be cabin pressure in the car?

General Discussion Area / D-Day

I note, sadly, the UK TV channels have not bothered this anniversary, I'm sure Celebrity Tits Out is more important.

As, not only Overload but all of the 2nd minor disagreement, falls out of living memory, remembering and learning from this time in history is important, more so as we head into a period of heightened global tension.

If ever you get a chance to visit the coast of Normandy, ignoring what some may think of the French, Socialist, EU, whatever, I would urge you to do so. Not only to pay your respects for those that never made it back, but also to understand those few weeks in history.

Lest we forget.

Database server is getting tight on disk space, so just need to increase a bit.  Should happen with no outage required, but shit can happen.

General Discussion Area / Outage this weekend
« on: 06 April 2024, 13:06:18 »
Trying to increase disk capacity due to an uptick in activity and subsequent increase in log file sizes, but Linux is being an arse.  For whatever reason, its not re-reading the drive size, so its gonna need a reboot. Sorry.

General Discussion Area / Images server
« on: 28 February 2024, 11:25:48 »
Our hosting provider is doing some work on our images server.  This serves static content like (guides) photos, logos, icons, smileys, and non visible stuff like CSS and javascript.

Its very likely this will cause some disruption to the site today and possibly overnight, resulting in corrupted pages, strange page layout, and the inability to post stuff.

We'll try to mitigate as much as possible by trying to serve some of that from the webserver instead, but expect issues.  We can not serve photos from the main webserver, so guides will be pictureless for a day or 2.

« on: 04 February 2024, 12:30:43 »
Free to good home, but collection only from Brackley.

2 sets of 286mm brake discs as fitted to early 2.0l petrol Omegas, and I think to some Senator and Carlton models.

Genuine GM, but been on the shelf for a few years.  PN: 90487103

General Car Chat / Age old question....
« on: 04 December 2023, 15:09:10 »
Perusing Autotrader, can't find anything that fits.

Large saloon
RWD
Auto
200+ BHP
£10kish for sub 10yr 100k miles example
40+ mpg capable day to day

I think my choices are:
BMW 7 Series - too many reliability issues, and struggle to fit in budget for a 100k mile example
Merc S class - a remotely acceptable one is 30+ years old.
Lexus (anything) - too narrow/cramped
Kia Stinger - could prove expensive as pattern parts and info hard to get
Infiniti - couldn't live with interior

Any other pearls of wisdom?
