Alloys out of true
« on: 28 November 2024, 17:52:06 »

Bit of a shock. Took my car into a large independent today and their pronouncement on a “ rumble” from rear ish of car is not wheel bearing as I expected but out of true rim(s).

I sort of get that as you can feel it in front seats. Wheels were balanced recently and don’t look as though they have lost any weights.

Solution? Well I am not spending 1200 on two new VW rims inc fitting. In January I will have access to the rears on our uk golf but neither car has a jack. I have seen a set of alloys on eBay for 700 inc delivery. Swap two over and errr put them back on for say 300. Or live with it. I will have them balanced again just to rule that out first.

Pretty irritating as we are planning a 4000 mile trip in a few weeks.

If a rebalance doesn’t do the job, can you get rims “ machined “ back true in uk while you wait with car on bricks…..?

Yes get them refurbished and straightened out. I had all mine done about 18 months ago for £90 each.

It's not a 'while you wait' job though, you'll have to leave the car or wheels with them for a couple of days at least, maybe more.

That is a logistical nightmare with no jack and no spare wheel. I can see there are some at Leicester.

Might have to buy two spare steels and a jack and then sell them back to scrap yard later  ;D

Thing is with buying second hand alloys, is that they are probably as scabby and bent as yours!  ::)

I'm sure that if you turned up at the refurb place with a couple of steels in the boot they'd put them on for you, if you arranged that with them in advance.  :y

I had two cars at the time I had mine done so was able to leave the Mondeo on stands and blocks and drop all 4 wheels off with the Volvo.  :)

The neighbours probably thought I was lowering the tone with an old abandoned car with no wheels blocked up on my drive!  ;D

Although they did charge more for the privilege, the place that I used would allow you to leave the entire car there. I didn’t need to personally as I have two cars, but the option was there, albeit at a small price.  :)
I appreciate that you still need to get home somehow.  :y

Yes the place I used offered that as well, so it might be worth El Varche doing that and hiring a car for a few days while his wheels are refurbed.  :)

It would save a lot of hassle buying second hand wheels and jacks etc, and probably wouldn't cost much more.  :y

I seem to have to get at least one of mine refurbed every 3-6 months, though fingers crossed, only had to do 2 this year so far.

One of our Spanish neighbours broke down outside our house . Knocked the door and asked can we leave 4x4 here, it has broken down. We said sure and helped them push it so we could get in and out.

Weeks later and it still hadn’t gone but no matter. However we came home and found it with no wheels and stood on four big logs we were processing. More weeks passed and they drove by in a newer Pajero with the recovered wheels.!

More time passed and one day a recovery truck came and actually dragged it, wheelers , onto the truck. Only in Spain. ;D

On a practical level, as you're in the EU... Get a set of cheap steel wheels with winter tyres from Germany.

If you're doing that sort of mileage in January,.then there's a fair chance of being somewhere where they're legally required.

Well things have moved on.

Found a wheel remanufacture place. Turned up thirty minutes before they closed for the weekend. Guy says I will put two loan wheels on your car and ring you when I have checked and rectified problem. As it was quiet he put both rears on his machine and pronounced them fine. One needed a slight adjustment to balance. The very slight vibration has gone. The rumble noise is still there. Could just be tyre noise or something in transmission. Either way we are going to live with it. Only need to get another 15 k miles out of the car

Ugh steel wheels. No thanks. We will not be anywhere that needs them ( famous last words) . If weather is that bad we will dig in somewhere and enjoy the Christmas spirit.

The grumble is probably a wheel bearing. ;)

Well that's a result about the wheels!  :y   You can afford to treat Mrs Varche to a slap up dinner in a fancy restaurant now.  :)                                 ;D
