I'd say it's snake oil. If there are magic ingredients to reduce friction and wear a good quality oil already has them in.

My parents have an alarm with wireless sensors, wired bell box, dialler and control unit. It works very well AFAIK. I'm sure, like anything electronic, there are good ones and there are rubbish ones. Next time I'm over at my folks' place I'll find out what one they've got.

Make sure you have a new stat, and stat bridge pipe plus bridge pipe to rad hose...plus associated seals....if its the latest design of stat it needs slightly longer bolts and the stat bolts need sealent as they go into a water jacket...

Was thinking about this on the way home. Both times we stopped on the way home, the top rad. hose and bleed pipe through the TB to the expansion tank were stone cold. Massaging the top hose a little soon got hot water running round the system. Max also said that it was OK at speed but temperature crept up when stopped.

I'm thinking that a leak on radiator side of the 'stat would draw a load of air into the system in the 'stat closed condition because the coolant pump is sucking on the bottom radiator hose against a closed thermostat - hence (relatively) low pressure in this part of the system. Air getting in the top of the system seemed to be far more of an issue when underway than coolant loss. I think we topped it up once but it certainly wasn't losing a lot of water. It just needed a massage every so often to get the coolant flowing again.

The gas could have come from a HGF, of course, but there was very little pressurisation of the system so thermostat and transfer pipe looks worth a try.

I'd like to echo the thanks to all involved, especially TheBoy for letting us trash his house and MaxV6 for the excellent food.

It was really good to meet you all although it'll take a few more rounds before I can reliably put names to all the faces, I'm sure.

The wife's not talking to me either after I rolled in at 2AM. :o

So, about a 13" blade, then? ;-)

Sorry I left you at the A34, MaxV6. I hit a load of standing water on the slip road prompting a traction control light at 70, then hit a red light behind you. I wasn't sure of the way from then on and by the way you were going I assumed you weren't in trouble so I got back on the A34.

Thanks again to all and looking forward to the next time.

I'm thinking that , assuming the garage doesn't fix it...  the best bet might be the cap off trick, back roads to Brackley with frequent stops, tonight , if Tunnie or anyone else  (Baz??  ) was willing to chaperone it... and give me a lift home again...  Obviously all fuel costs etc at my expense...
then the car is at jaime's first thing, nice and cool for strip down..... and I could either get a lift over , or come in the pug early on saturday,

You'll need a lift over on Saturday morning so you can drive back in the fixed Omega on Saturday night!

I could pick both yourself and cornishtaz up on the way through if parking's going to be tight.

If the worst comes to the worst and you need a lift I'm coming past Oxford on the A34 Saturday AM.

Hope you get it sorted though.

I can bring a couple of torque wrenches. I've got a 1/2" and a 3/8".

I've also got a trolley jack. It's heavy, not pretty, it's cheap but it just about does the job (what was that about body profile?).

I'll also collect up as many Torx sockets, etc. as I can.

Is there anything that anyone needs me to bring?

Same goes for me. I haven't got cam locking kits and the like but I've got most general purpose tools and I'll try and bring a selection of bits and pieces. I guess even if we're short of locking kits, if we've got a good supply of sockets, torque wrenches, etc the more cars we can prep. for the belt change in parallel.

Downside to this is that we could end up trying to sort out a great big pile of tools at the end of the day if we're not careful! One toolkit working on one car at a time might be a good rule!

Have a look at ebay item 150092463827. Not sure it'd arrive by Saturday but looks pretty reasonable.

Not sure how much they are through other channels.

Note, I will bring all the odds and sods I have lying about (with the exception of cylinder heads etc!) which members can help themselves to if they need anything....

Excellent.

Come to think of it, I'm missing the little plastic clips that hold the panel above the driver's feet on. If anyone's got a couple of these spare it would be good.

Cheers,

Kevin

if it hasn't arrived, I have an old spare used one somewhere or other, let me know before too late on friday eh?  you're welcome to it...

Failing that i have a fairly new one on the Sintra, which isn't in use right now...

That way you'll at least be able to ,make the most of the weekend's events...

Thanks for that, MaxV6. I will let you know later in the week. I should have asked around here before ordering one.

Thinking of brake light switches, I wonder if I'll need to change mine? IIRC, the cruise control one has 4 pins and the non-cruise one only 2?

Tech2 will be available, for pricelist, see my post at top of every section...

OK. That's great. I'll be there.

I also would like to install cruise at some point so would like someone to show me roughly where everything goes!

Well, I've got the stalk on order so if that's arrived by the weekend I'll bring it along and we can see if we can muddle our way through it I guess!

Cheers,

Kevin

Hi All,

I wouldn't mind coming along to say Hi as I'm a new forum member.

I bought my Omega about 6 weeks ago. I bought it at just under 42,000 and it was serviced by the dealer from whom I purchased it. They have stamped the book and indicated the cambelt and pullies were changed but if there's time a quick exploratory peek under the covers to check the condition of the belt would be good as I am wary of trusting 2nd hand car dealers. It would also be good to see the procedure carried out as I will be servicing it myself in future.

I'd also be interested, again, if time permits, in enabling the cruise control if there'll be a Tech2 to hand as I'd like to change the stalk to one with the cruise buttons on it in the near future. I might even be able to source a stalk before the weekend.

Cheers,

Kevin

Is it aupposed to have fog lights on both sides? Some times there's a lens and reflector so they can use the same part ofr LHD but only the offside is used in the UK.

21w tail lights can't be right. Sounds like someone has fitted the wrong bulbs. I doubt they'd do anything as elaborate as dim 21w bulbs. Are they less bright than the brake lights with 21's in?

Weird goings on indeed!

Was it a low energy bulb? Guess they have the potential to cause interference, especially in some weird failure mode but other than that I struggle to see how they could be connected.

If the phone line is still bad try looking for the master socket (phone socket with a horizontal split across the middle). Undo the two screws and remove the lower half of the socket and move it to one side being careful not to dislodge the wires connected to it. You will see another phone socket recessed into which the bottom half normally plugs. Plug your PC / phone into here and see if it's still noisy.

What you have just tried is to disconnect all the extension wiring in your house and connect directly to the incoming line. If that improves matters you have a problem somewhere in the building. Could be dodgy wiring or a duff phone connected to an extension somewhere.

Are you on broadband or dial-up?
