Hi,
Took a stone to the windscreen on the Not-A-Vauxhall over the weekend. It 'might' be repairable although the chip is quite large. Sadly it's in the drivers section of the windscreen. Will certainly be an MOT failure come October.

Now in the past I've just paid for repairs on the LC and Omega - a repair used to be about £30 and a new screen about £150. I'm struggling to get online 'quotes' without giving inside leg measurements, bank account details phone and email contact details, but Autoglass seem to want £250 for repair? Halfords appear to want £40 for a repair - although their limit is 15mm which I suspect this chip exceeds.

So what's the going rate for a largish repair? I'd rather not involve the insurance co if I don't have to.

Damage up to 40mm across can usually be repaired, as long as it’s not in the driver’s view  an area called the ‘A zone.’ Here, only damage up to 10mm can be repaired effectively.

I was going to recommend Phoenix Windscreens who I've used a couple of times at their Exeter branch, but it looks like they've closed down. 

I'd look around for an indy windscreen place before going to Autoglass and the likes of. Must be somewhere around Yeovil or Taunton?

Just measured it, and from one side to t'other is 23mm.

What I don't get is why there are different allowable repairs from one side of the screen to the other. The screen is the same part in LHD and RHD cars so it can't be a 'structural integrity' thing - the bit I need doing would be the passenger side on a LHD car so OK to repair, but not on a RHD car

Driver's immediate field of view. Anything the drivers wiper passes over can impact the effectiveness of the wiper.

Mine has a chip on the drivers side low and to the corner. Passed last 2 MoTs like it.

Autoglass place say they have a 20mm limit in the drivers zone, so replace.

Halfords say 15mm in the drivers zone, so replace.

Will ring my tame windscreen bloke on Monday and see what he says - but I suspect he'll want to replace it too. Best get my insurance policy out to see what the excess for windscreens is.

I know my windscreen is £400 excess , hers is the more usual £120, yet it's same joint policy.  Go figure.

Just checked my AA insurance documents and Windscreen cover is "Unlimited, subject to a £75 excess".

Can you claim on your insurance LC0112G for a new windscreen, rather than repair or have you no insurance to cover it?

My insurance company, RSA, is NIL excess for both windscreen repairs and replacement. When I got a cracked windscreen, not only did they replace the windscreen with a genuine manufacturers screen, they covered the cost of a 4 wheel alignment prior to the resetting the camera and sensors for the lane departure, lane assist and all the fancy gubbins that uses the front windscreen cameras. Total cost was over £1400 with no cost to me apart from the travelling cost taking it to Audi for the work to be carried out. I was very impressed with their service.

Indeed Opti,  I believe it is good and the insurance company is AXA Insurance UK PLC, who through the AA have provided my insurance for a few years now.

My Insurance excess is £15 for repairs, and £100 for replacements.

But I'd rather pay a local fitter than go through insurance. Last time I had the Omega done I paid £150, whereas on insurance they were going to charge the insurance co £260 ish, and I would have to pay £75. It may not affect your NCB, but it does go on your insurance record. And if you think that doesn't affect future premiums you're in dreamland.
