DAB
« on: 13 March 2007, 07:54:45 »

I thought DAB radio is supposed to have crystal clear reception?!

Actually the one I have at home is great but the one I have at work gets really annoying at times. It can be OK then it sounds like it’s under water. I fiddle with the aerial & get it working again which can last hours or minutes & then the “bubbling” is back, sometimes if I leave it it will return to normal on it's own.
Anyone know if there’s anything I can do to stop this? Before I throw the **** thing at the wall  >:(

yep - that's what happens in marginal signal conditions. The superb bubbling mud sound!! If you can select the display to show signal strength you'll see it'll be low when the bubbling starts. You need a stronger signal ... so a better aerial ... or move closer to the transmitter  ;)

It's so frustrating, it can be OK for days but other days it's awful.
It's a portable so nowhere to plug in another aerial, I was thinking about perhaps winding some wire around the existing aerial & extending it around the office....

Another thought, if reception can be so bad in a static location; what are they like in a car?

I'm on my second car one now and it's fine! I only get the bubbling when I drive through the middle of nowhere and it soon sorts itself out when it moves to the next signal (national DAB only)

You haven't got something that occasionally interferes with it, have you?

Computer equipment is the most likely culprit. Might be worth trying to re-locate it but the real answer is a better antenna.

There's elecrical equipment all over the place including PC's.
I've tried moving it around & sometimes it will work OK, sometimes not, people moving near it also affects.......

When I lived in Aylesbury, I gave my DAB away, as I couldn't get a stable decent signal without faffing around.

What gets me is; I can get a decent signal but just don't know how long it''ll last.....

DAB Sucks....

it HAD great potential to deliver improved quality broadcasts to the masses.... approaching CD quality,  even surround was possible.....

but no, the money grubbing idiots in the Government decided, rather than stick to the original plan, they'd reduce the bit rates per signal to squeeze in more stations into the available bandwidth , to increase the revenue from it, instead of improving the delivery service ... it's a significantly lower QUALITY signal than FM......

There have even been rumours of some OB engineers, and Mobile recording operations refusing to feed DAB asa protest against the step backwards....    it's only halfway between what we HAD on AM radio, and FM as currently implemented, and even FM is now not as good as it used to be, largely because of over eager station controllers demanding to be louder than the other station.....  so pushing the optimod compression harder than it was ever intended to be used...

listen to the typical Radio 1 broadcast today and a decent recording of a Radio 1 broadcast 10-15 years ago and you can HEAR the difference markedly.

and they're far from the only, or worst of.f.e.nders.  (ADMIN< CHANGE THE BLOODY AUTO FILTER TO ALLOW THE WORD F.E.N>D.E.R please )

Video didn;t kill the radio star

they did it to themselves.

Won't buy a Dab radio as the standard for DAB+ has just been agreed has different codecs - as normal
not copatible with DAB.

Don't know if the reception will be any better ?

Yep. Used to love listening to a decent FM tuner, especially before I had CDs. It was probably the best quality source I had, and the BBC were at least purists in terms of sound quality until recent years. Now it sounds like some chav has messed with the equaliser. Unlistenable on anything of any quality.

In addition, the ADs have to be emphasised even more, of course, so you're forever reaching for the volume control.

Same with TV. We have HD pictures at last albeit a far cry from what was being demo'ed in the early '90's but the quality of the progammes and production has gone down the toilet so it's not worth bothering.

Yep it's crap, I have the add-on box for my car stereo but have since disconnected it and removed it as it's bloody next to useless. Drops out even when you go under a long bridge that would barely cause a crackle on FM.

Quite simply, they screwed this one up. It's as good as dead, I'm sure a much better standard will supersede it before people start moving away from analogue radio en-masse.
