at cars! - to take a break from project work I always like browsing autotrader! (how sad  )

started looking at Jag XJ Saloons, some bloody tasty examples out there!

for around 9k i saw a 2001 60k miles 4.0 Supercharged V8
 
5.3 seconds to 60 and from some forums i searched an average of 26mpg!!  

It seams the early V8's had some nickle??  :-/ Issues with the bore's thats about it... timing chains are expensive to replace, other than that the Jag forums seams to have very little on problems.

(dreaming here about a motor for when i am earning money again!  )

Meant to ask has anyone had any experiance of these, reviews say fantastic cars but expensive to run. What are parts like? With chains no belt to worry about so its the usual exhaust, wishbones, drop links, rubber ect?

Was it Nikasil?

Sounds like the same issue as the early BMW V8s. Bores are machined straight into an ally block and nikasil treated to harden them. Certain types of fuel would wreck the bores. Once they're worn the engine smokes like Dot Cotton, no prospect of a re-bore  

There's something reassuring about having a nice iron block, a boat anchor though it may be.

Still, makes me wonder why I've just paid a fair chunk of that cash for an MV6 with 20K less miles on it and 18 months newer. Oh, yes, the small matter of insuring it and feeding it with fuel.

This was a Daimler Double Six I used to own. 6.0ltr 318BHP and about 15 mpg but it was a lovely car and very rare.

A few years back a young neighbour of mine used to wheel & deal in 'cheap' cars and bought himself an XJS 5.3 (PRE HE) as a treat to himself. I stopped & asked how he could run a car like that & what did it do to the gallon. His reply was ... I'm still playing but it's somewhere between 6 & 8 to the gallon!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It makes a 3.0 Omega look frugal!

Very nice though, i was once out dragged by a s*dding Skoda up the hill on the out skirts of Bristol to-wards Weston- super-Mud. Thought i had a tasty motor in my 1.3 Mk1 Escort with Mex engine in. The look on my face must have said it all as i was on my first 'date' with a local lady. Well they say that is all they wrote...

It was a very nice car and some poor sod paid £55,000 for it new and 6 years later I bought it for £3350 kept it for 18 month and sold it to a wedding company just outside Blackpool for £3500

Problem with the bores on Jaguars was around R and S reg cars. Anything later has been fixed. Parts (and labour) are expensive though. I had an S-type and used to spend on average £2k at each service - there was always someting needing done. My facelift Omega 2.5 V6 only cost me £2k to buy so I reckon its much better value and just as good a drive.

Doesn't seem so fast for a supercharged 4.0! But then it's probably going through a slushmatic, so probably on par for that size of car. Don't think it'd be much fun to drive though, more the kind of car to be driven in rather than a driver's car.

Nikasil does affect some Jaguar engines, and I think these V8s may have been one of them. Early M60 BMW 3.0 and 4.0 V8s were affected, basically the sulphur in fuel reacts with the lining and it gradually loses compression until eventually it runs rough and in severe cases won't even start. Replacement short block required. BMW switched to alusil for the M62 (3.5, 4.4, 4.6 and 4.8 V8s) which thankfully don't suffer this problem.

Personally I have no interest in XJs, it's more of a retirement car. Did look at the XK8/XKR briefly before I bought the 840, but finding a manual version is *very* difficult (basically some of the tuned-up special edition models) so it was quickly scrubbed from the list.
