Omega General Help / AR35 / Autobox Sensor
« on: Today at 13:27:05 »
The small, 2-pin sensor at the rear of the autobox. Please can someone tell me what job it does, and the consequence of it not being plugged in?

I’ve heard it called a “speed sensor” but I’m guessing that relates to sending the speed of the gearbox shaft to the TCM for shifting purposes, as I’m pretty sure the speedo is fed from the ABS system?

Finally - does anyone have or please know where I’m could buy a plug for the speed sensor and a short length of wiring? Maybe someone has an old loom in the shed? I can’t find one anyone and the plug on my loom is damaged.

Thanks chaps :y

Many thanks

Omega General Help / 3.2 Elite - Surface rust in bores
« on: 22 March 2024, 18:08:09 »
Last July I bought a 3.2 Elite, non runner. Cambelt failure, trashed valves. I took it apart to diagnose the problem (heads off) but then got rather unwell and haven’t really worked on a car since. On a few occasions I’ve opened the bonnet, taken one look and thought “sod that” and closed it again.

Last week I decided I need to make a start. I noticed that, where it’s been sat with the heads off, the bores have collected a light layer of surface rust.

I am not taking the lump out (I’m not sure I’ll ever do work of that magnitude again) but for my own satisfaction (and to enjoy the Elite!) I’d like to get this running again. So I decided it has 2 chances and I would clean the bores with some wet and dry.

That is what I’ve done. The end result is some very clean looking bores, but it has also removed some of the previous hone markings. The bores are now silky smooth to touch with a finger, but they look quite scratched. They are not scratched at all, to the touch / fingernail and are totally smooth.

After cleaning them I put a generous amount of oil in each one and turned the crank by hand - again, turns absolutely fine and smoothly with no undue resistance.

Do we think I’ll get away with it? Can’t imagine I’d have widened them enough for bore taper, or oil burning?

Of note there was no rust below any of the pistons, just above where they were sat.

Thanks for your thoughts. Hoping it can still be saved from the scrapper. It’s a nice example that has new sills etc and cream leather so I’d like to run about in her over the summer  :y

Cars for Sale & wanted / 2.6 Elite Estate for Spares or Repair!
« on: 14 November 2023, 14:05:23 »
A week or so ago I purchased an Elite Estate, with only a couple of days MOT, for the bargain price of £275. I was planning to strip various components from it, for my 3.2 project (seen in the background!), but for various reasons I've been able to get them elsewhere, so I can now avoid stripping this one down in the cold and rain.

Essentially I am offering the car for what I paid for it - £275. The MOT has now expired.

The description is already here on this board, by the previous owner, Boatboy, so I don't need to repeat it, because it's honest and comprehensive. Only additional point is that there are 4 x very good Continental tyres fitted.

Offered to the forum for £275, which is below scrap value. Worth a fortune in parts but I really (really) CBA to break an Omega over winter. MOT has expired, handbrake is shagged, might need welding, take a punt for very little money?

Located in Oxfordshire. Photos taken this weekend after my drive home. Did the 50 miles without issue. Pulls well, gearbox great, slight pull to the right under braking. The final picture is trying to show a small crack at the bottom of the screen but it's not come out very well.

Grab a bargain :y

Here's one for all you grumpy old men (myself included)

PRONOUNS.

Am I the only one who thinks the world has gone absolutely rather barking mad over political correctness and virtue signaling?

I was recently referred to in a document, repeatedly, as "they". I am not a rather "they", I am a "he". Firstly, there is only one of me, and "they" by definition means more than one.

Secondly, if you're that worried about offending me by using my (obvious) gender and therefore saying "he", just use my bloody name?

What is with this absolute shit?

General Car Chat / Passat Diesel - Cut out
« on: 07 October 2023, 21:33:11 »
I have a 2009 Passat Estate, purchased as a daily hack now the Rangie has gone to heaven. It's a 2.0 TDi, 6 speed manual. Very high miles - 209k. I bought it with 206k on the clock, and have done nothing other than a cambelt kit and water pump (DIY) about 2000 miles ago. It has always started and always driven exceptionally well.

Day before yesterday I left home, drove less than a mile, and it just suddenly lost power and died. Like fuel starvation. I managed to roll into a layby, tried to restart, no go. It was trying (and tried harder when cranking at WOT) but wouldn't go. I didn't try for long, because I needed to get somewhere, so I walked home to get the other car.

Today I went back to the VW. Plugged in a code reader - no codes. Cranked it a bit, and after a short while it caught, coughed a bit, and then ran fine.  I went for a spin, covered 10 miles without any issue at all, plenty of power.

The fuel tank was full, almost to the brim, when it broke down. It was filled up the night before and had only covered 15 miles home. BUT, when I last refuelled the night before, it was literally on fumes. Range saying 0, gauge not moving (I know, I know!)

I am wondering if I ran it so low, that it took in some air or crap or similar, but odd that it took 15 miles after refueling to show up?

Guess all I can do is keep an eye and see if it reoccurs  :-\

General Car Chat / Heavy Oil Stain
« on: 15 September 2023, 07:02:47 »
I’ll keep this brief because it is what it is … I have made a balls up and kicked over a bucket of used engine oil from my 3.2 project, all over my concrete driveway. Up to three litres spilled. Covered in compost (all I had nearby) to stop the spread, I later removed this and went and got some cat litter which soaked it all up, but (obviously) has left a big (big!) black stain. Let’s say half a meter square - significant.

Someone on OOF must have been in this position before  ::) Any tips on removing the stain, please? It’s grey concrete, not tarmac.

Cheers 👍🏻

Need a rear set of seats for an estate. Any type considered, even if it’s a mismatch, as a stopgap to get the car MOT worthy. Cheers

Omega General Help / 2.2 Head Gasket Material Type
« on: 07 August 2023, 00:29:06 »
Sorry to sound dim, but I’m getting old and it’s been over a decade since I did any meaningful work on a 4 banger Omega … can someone please tell me if the 2.2 petrol uses a composite, or a multi-layer steel head gasket?

Many thanks in advance :y :y

I have here an iCarsoft i908 device. It’s for VW / Audi / Skoda. It will read, reset, and do live data from all systems inc engine, transmission, airbag, ABS ETC.

£55 posted. It’s like new with the original manual and carry case. I bought it to sort a relatives car and it’s only ever been used once.

They are a lot more than this on mainstream selling sites :y

Wanted - two wheels to fit Omega please. Any tyres even flat ones. It’s just to keep a breaker rolling to go on a truck :y

General Car Chat / Cooked it
« on: 27 June 2023, 20:54:09 »
My lovely 2.6 which passed her MOT literally three or four days ago.

Savagely cooked to death on the motorway.

I had a Seat Leon on my arse, so gave it some beans to create some distance before moving back in.

Looked in rear view mirror - loads and loads of white looking smoke.

Was too dangerous to stop (no hard shoulder at that point) so carefully kept going. Smoke seemed to clear. No rise in temp gauge or coolant level warnings.

Three miles before the next junction (services), a load of really nasty ratting, power loss, and dead as a dodo.

Fair to say it’s cooked.

I will be robbing the parts I want to make my 3.2 good, and then breaking it. Real shame but, the paint is poor, and now with a goosed engine, she is toast :(

RIP

Omega General Help / Sodium filled Valves
« on: 22 June 2023, 15:41:05 »
Hi Folks,

Can someone please confirm which models were fitted with sodium filled valves? Was it just the 3.0, or did the 3.2 get them too?

Also, I'm guessing it's just exhaust valves, not inlet? :y

General Discussion Area / Washing Machine woes
« on: 22 June 2023, 14:48:59 »
I have a Hotpoint washing machine, WMFUG742PUK.

I put a load of washing in it the other day, and upon spin, it sounded like a bag of spanners - almost needed ear defenders!

I let it finish, and emptied it. I then checked the drum, and as suspected, the bearings at the back of the drum have fallen to bits, you can feel the drum shaft banging around in the bearing races.

I started to strip down the machine today, and upon removing the top, noticed that the drum is a bloody sealed unit!

You always used to be able to uncouple it with screws/bolts, to take the drum apart and get to the bearings. Now it's all one mould!

This is absolutely criminal - if I could get to the bearings, I could replace them for a tenner. But instead, I have to buy either a new "integrated drum unit" which is almost £300, or, at that price, avoid the hassle and just get a new machine dropped off.

I've never seen so much nonsense, what an absolute throwaway society.

I've looked at the drum unit, and I do quite fancy my chances of cutting along the seam with a fine saw blade, and drillling a load of small holes to insert locking nuts/bolts to hold it together. Perhaps with some grey VX oil cooler goo to seal it back up  ::)

Clearly a trick by the cock of a manufacturer to stop DIY / independent repairs and make you buy more of their products  >:(
