Hi Guys

Wondered if someone could help please. I'm having problems with the EML coming on every start up.

A couple of weeks ago, I needed to replace a leaking heater bypass unit on the omega 2.2 DTI. After I refilled the water system and went for a test run, the EML lit up and the car went into limp mode. The temperature gauge was a bit all over the place, so I just put this down to an air lock and continued with the test drive.

During this time the EML was going out for periods and back on. When I lifted the bonnet for the third time surveying for disconnected pipes or cold hoses where they should be hot. I finally spotted the old favorite, a small Vac pipe had slipped out of it's rubber elbow and tucked it's self around the back of a hose.

I reconnected and everything was fine and dandy

However since then everytime I start the car the EML comes on for a few minutes then goes out when I set off with some reasonable accelatation.

Everything seems fine and the car runs okay, but its niggling me.

Could it be possible that with all the warnings I was getting, that the fault list could be full and needs clearing or do you think I have a problem lurking. :-/

Accidentally disconnecting the vac pipe might have caused a fault code to be thrown up. if this is stored in the ecu the light will come on each time the car is started until a certain number of 'clean' starts have occurred (not sure how many). If the codes are cleared then the light will be reset.

Achieves the square root of nothing.

The ECU retains fault information until :

A) The fault is removed for some faults, not others.

B) The codes are reset

C) 20 starts with no faults

I'd start by seeing what the car thinks is wrong and get an e.c.u. diagnostics check, if that comes back with a P0400 code then that points to a problem with the vacuum pipe network. Over time the rubber elbows and 'T' pieces perish and split, you should check the whole network carefully by disconnecting each rubber joint in turn and giving it a slight twist, then re-connect it and move on to the next.

Low oil level can also cause low vacuum performance...

I'll get it checked out and re-check all my vac pipes and fittings.

I have had a cracked rubber elbow in the past. I'd forgotten about that possibility.

Brikhead is quite right. I had a similar problem that brought the eml on when I braked repeatedly. Not hard breaking, but just normal slow traffic stuff. Turned out to to  a pesky little "C" shaped  rubber connector on the vac pump.  ( behind the rocker box--- feel it rather than see it!) This was split and with repeated braking the vacum would drop to bring on the eml. Finally sorted it using vacum test guage. Car went much better follwing replacement with a definate kick from the Turbo that I had forgotted occuring !
