head gasket kabooom

hey hey my headgasket went last night (x20xev) just wondered whats involved with the change, do i need sealant? i reckon an a new HG kit and bolts off ebay unless any1 knows anywhere cheaper, and a skim of the head anything else i should know about? any advise greatly appreciated. cheers - des

Not something I've ever done, but not sure if its worth reseating valves etc whilst its off?

Get a camlock off ebay at the same time (£5?) . You only need to get the head skimmed if it is warped...unlikely unless you cooked it when the gasket went.
I would lap the valves and replace the valve stem seals while its in bits and also replace the exhaust manifold gasket and check the manifold for flatness at the same time but be very careful with the manifold studs, they snap very easily so soak in penetrating fluid for a day or two and be prepared to drill out any broken ones.

shoot me if i am ahead of the game - but how do you know there gone - had them off yet?

I stand by my favourite saying this week, vx heads are mega reliable......but then again i guess 4 pots not as tough as the v6`s :-/

Time to shut up too many stellas....or not enough  ::) ;)

either way get the head checkd before a skim, if there straight save some skin and about £40  :y

very true and im holdin back on buying the gasket till the heads off, but going by the loss of 4l of coolant, gas and oil mixing in the expansion bottle and the shed loads of water coming outa the exhaust blown HG is the sunny side of the coin. but on the plus side im fallin in love with a 94 primera borrowed from the GF 500 miles in the last two days hasnt missed a beat
