Signum ATF.
« on: 05 March 2024, 18:49:58 »

Can members who know more than me post a link for the correct ATF  (and amount required) for a 2007 2.8T.

The job itself does not look that difficult.

Mrs Opti says drop it at WBAC and run. :)

I'm guessing it's fitted with the Asian Warner, gearbox these use a mineral oil, it takes about 7L but you have to drain and fill a few times. It's possible AW-1 or ATF3309

Drain and fill a few times?......sounds expensive and time consuming.

Why so, BG?

Can't I simply drain out 7 litres of the old crap and refill with 7 litres of the new stuff.

You wont get it all out, so you end up mixing significant amounts of old shitty fluid with new, hence having to do a few times as each draining reduces the ratio of the old fluid.

Ah....I see. Thanks, TB.

So how much oil is needed to get 7 litres of clean ATF?......or is this not really possible?

the issue is the torque converter . if you drain the sump you drain a percentage of the fluid but none of the torque converter and it holds a lot of fluid . so as the engine is run again the new fluid circulates and replaces the fluid in the torque converter which mixes with the old fluid . every time you drain and refill you get more of the old "mixed in" fluid out !

You learn something new every day.

I thought it would simply be a case of drain the old and refill with new.

IIRC, over half of the ATF is retained in the torque converter. So you will only drain c.3.5 litres of oil first go.
So....in my understanding....first oil change gives a 50% ratio of old to new, second one gives you 75%, third one gives 87.5% and so on. So 10.5 litres of ATF will, more or less, give you an acceptable ratio.

I dont know that particular gearbox, but I'd guess you'd get a little over half out, so end with a 50:50 mix os old and new.  After a 2nd change, that'll be 75:25, and a 3rd, 87.5:12.5 and so on...

Even 50:50 is a marked improvement on 100% old oil.

I wonder how much old ATF is left mixed with the new stuff when you drop it in at Bodgit and Scarper service department. ::)

Probably 50:50, as you have to run through the gears between each oil change. But 50:50 will still be an improvement.

How do I check the ATF level as there is no dipstick?

I'm guessing you lie under the car and undo certain bolts and she if any 'weep' a little fluid. ::)

Well f*uck that. ;D

Don't know where the fill/drain plug are in this application so could be on the end of the 'box and accessible through the wheelarch or you might need to be underneath the car to do it.basically you get things up to operating temperature then with the car level gearbox in park and engine running you remove fill plug and then[as you say]there should be a slight weep if it's up to level.

Assuming it has a gearbox oil cooler - you could take one of the pipes off it, and put a bucket under the end to collect fluid. Then start the engine, cycle through gear positions, while putting new fluid in the box at the same time..
When you have the correct amount of fluid in the bucket, and the fluid coming from the pipe is new, keep filling to the correct level, then job done.
Havent done it myself, but can remember it being recommended on a Mercedes forum a few years ago.
Miay be easier with two people.

If you take to a proper gearbox specialist, they will pump the ATF through, putting in new as it extracts the old.  This gets to a near 100% fresh ratio.

But far cheaper to do it yourself a couple of times, but depends on your CBA levels.

I've found out that the ATF should be changed every 6 years or 50,000 miles.

I've not changed it and I can't find any evidence of it being changed by the original owner(s)

This magnificent beast has now covered 96,000 miles. :)

TBH, if the issue you had was a hydro mechanical issue, you're pissing in a force 9 anyway.  Nothing will fix it.  If it was an electronic issue, that needs resolving.

*BUT* gearbox servicing is part of the car's servicing requirements, so needs doing anyway, unless you think the box is shagged.

No codes or warning lights.....the car just got very hot after a while at 50 MPH, which is 5000 rpm in second gear.

If the gearbox was in limp, which sounds like it was if it just picked 1 gear, there will be codes in the gearbox.

10ltrs of ATF should be about £70 depending on your choice and 1 hour at you local £60 per hour man and you get change for a pint and a pie out of £150 and the knowledge that you have done the gearbox a good turn.

Slightly more if you get the sump dropped and filter replaced .

A man of your wealth is just pocket change  ;D

For my amusement I thought I'd contact my local Vauxhall dealer.

So....7 litres of ATF at £15 per litre plus the VAT comes to £126.

Add 2 hours of labour at £135 P/H plus VAT  comes to £324.

Total....£450. ;D ;D ;D

I would just leave it if it's working ok. Then the collective that is OOF can collectively piss ourselves when you get stuck in second miles from home and chant "Told you to get it done, tight arse"  ;D

It could get stuck in first which would be even worse... :D ;D

Hooked up the Maxiscan 509, which was kindly given to me by an OOF member.

No codes  either stored or pending.
Can that do gearbox, as its just a OBDII scanner...

I have an Autel Maxiscan MS509 and *mine* doesn’t do auto gearbox codes. It’s a generic engine code reader that reads engine fault codes, clears codes, reads fuel trim and live data. I’ve looked at the manual and no mention of gearbox codes.   :)

**
I say *mine* as many adverts on eBay claim that they do read gearbox codes.  ::)  Mine categorically does not read gearbox codes though.  ;D

Opti, I've got an iCarsoft here with Vx files on it, that will read the gearbox codes. Happy to loan it out for a week if you would find it useful.

PM me if you'd like it.  :y

Thanks Jim, I appreciate the OOF kindness.

She seems to be behaving herself again now and I'm hoping it was just some sort of 17 year old female 'hissy fit' that won't happen again.   :)

Get a twig and give it a damn good thrashing, or take it for a full blooded hell drivers type gravel run🤣.

No worries, I hope that's how it stays. But if you change your mind (or the car changes it for you) the offers open.

If you plan to keep your future classic until it dissolves, I think I'd phone around some indy garages/gearbox specialists for quotes on changing the fluid and disturb the wallet moths.  :)

Alternatively, you can leave the moths alone, hope for the best, and give us all a laugh when the gearbox dies in a spectacular fashion in a typically inconvenient place/time!  ;D

I think it's giving you a hint that it wants some TLC.  ;)
